Maybe if we Ran away with Carly Rae Jepsen in 2015 none of this would have happened

Thing w the first doctor is he has probably the most dramatic character development of any of the doctors (new & classic) and that's one of the really fun things about watching his era retrospectively as you get to watch him choosing to stop being a detached observer and be The Doctor. He arcs out big time ok.

And now we're finally getting into the stories I haven't heard before! Starting with Lurker's at Sunlight's Edge.
This one has a really hard time following A Death in the Family. To be fair, so would anything, but unfortunately I don't think Lurkers is a particularly good story regardless
What I really wanted after ADitF was a quiet, calm, slow story; instead this is big and brash and full of shouting and roaring monsters and I kind of don't love it
There's a fascinating idea at the centre of this one where a pulp fiction writer's work (in this case a direct H. P. Lovecraft pastiche) starts becoming real
My favourite moment in this story is when the bad guy's 'sacred text’ turns out to be a cheap copy of a magazine called Shuddersome Tales. That's such a brilliant thought and I wish it was explored more!
Instead the character we have in place of Lovecraft turns out to be an alien himself, and his stories are his alien memories bleeding through – which is ALSO a brilliant idea and would be so cool if it wasn't entirely described in exposition
Doveday's backstory is actually way more interesting than the story itself, which is mostly a runaround with lots of shouting. Not my favourite type of story, and it's a shame that it's trying to go so big, when ADitF already went as big as any Who story can get.
5/10 for me.
Robophobia is up next. Which means one thing – my wonderful Liv Chenka!! 😍
seven/ace/hex relisten <3
I’ve been really missing the seventh doctor recently so decided it was time to relisten to Hex’s storyline in the Big Finish main range! Its been ages since I first heard some of these (and i’ve never listened past Protect and Survive before) so I’m genuinely excited :) One of my favourite BF arcs so far I think!
I’m going to note down my thoughts as I go, starting with The Harvest:
I love how this story introduces us to Hex. He’s a sweet guy, it’s his birthday and he’s already having the worst time of his life. Sorry king it will NOT get better
I also enjoy the trend of Seven stories where he’s just skulking around for most of episode 1. Ace is like this is my dad he loves lurking
It’s such an optimistic vision of 2021? I love the reference to “Big Ben and the Museum of Parliament”. I wish. That and the all the tech the hospital use feels so far in the future even now
That being said there’s a weird Brexity vibe later on? The whole program being run by the Euro-Combine and all. Seven even blames the whole thing on “Eurocrats in Brussels” at one point. It just feels strange. I had enough of that in 2016 thanks
“Sus”
Seven is absolutely flirting with System in part two. Oh my. I bet she loves him rewiring her insides
I like this take on the Cybermen too. The fact that these specific Cybermen want to be converted back into humans is really interesting!
I like how it makes the Cybermen kind of messy? I tend to see Cyber-conversion as a one-way, homogenising process but this story says so—there are those Cybermen who want it reversed. And i love how grotesque and body-horrory that reverse process is
Even the obligatory twist about how the Cyberleader was in control the whole time! doesn’t detract from that core idea too much—he’s still clearly finding joy in becoming human, even if it’s only with the end goal of completely Cyber-converting the rest of the human race
As a final thought—the sound design on this story is so… dense? So much is happening all at once it’s kind of hard to keep track of voices, especially near the end
Overall though I enjoyed this one a lot! It’s got a great, cold atmosphere with lots of gnarly stuff behind the scenes. I haven’t talked much about Hex but his dynamic with 7 & Ace is already great and probably my favourite part of this story. 8/10 overall i think!
TARDIS wiki moment: remember the Euro-combine treaty? That links in to the UNIT story The Longest Night! I like all those tiny references in the early BF years tbh

PEACOCKS
The last zine page I'm gonna share for now! And edgiest yet, but since it's dedicated to pretty much my favourite album ever I really wanted to show you this. Ironically, despite how heavy it is narratively it helped me go through so many ups and downs since I found out about TMG ~10 years ago. My favourite forever and always. ✌ Also I must say it feels so strange to draw emotionally heavy illustrations, such as this one, when I'm feeling absolutely great IRL. That was the case with all of the darker pictures in this series and it felt genuinely odd, I guess I just never drew such themes when I was feeling good - but it feels nice to have that distance. 2025 makes me endlessly happy and hopeful so far (even if it's incredibly busy and I don't get to have much time to rest XD) and I want to stress this as I post a tiny Jagal falling into the void, haha. That guy is DEFINITELY not me ✌

Which doctor do you think has the worst track record for taking care of their companions?
Its got to be 11 right? I mean how many times did Amy and Rory die or good as
Eknodines in Amy's Choice (Rory)
Van crash in Amy's Choice (Amy)
Hypothermia in Amy's Choice (Amy and Rory)
Shot in Cold Blood (Rory)
Absorbed by a crack in Cold Blood (Rory)
Shot in the Pandorica Opens (Amy)
Universe restart in the Big Bang (definitely Rory, since he changes species, and I would argue Amy as well)
Drowning in The Curse of the Black Spot (Rory)
Old age in The Doctor's Wife (Rory)
Ganger is disintegrated (Amy)
Turned into a doll in Night Terrors (Amy)
Timeline deleted in The Girl Who Waited (Amy)
Universe restart in The Wedding of River Song (Amy and Rory)
Old age in The Angels Take Manhattan (Rory)
Joint suicide in The Angels Take Manhattan (Amy and Rory)
Sent back by angels in The Angels Take Manhattan (Amy and Rory)
some of these are probably stretching the definition, but equally I am probably missing some. I don't think anybody else has to deal with the mortal part of mortal danger quite as often
