REVIVAL In 1722 a group of persecuted Christians fled from their homeland and resettled in what is today Eastern Germany. There were Lutherans, Baptist, and Reformed believers all trying to start over again. On May 12, 1727, the community entered into a covenant to emphasize the points they agree on, rather than stressing their differences. The result was a high stress on the importance of prayer. On August 13, 1727, at a communion service, they felt the pour of the Holy Spirit fall upon them. (Yes, even the Reformed members... 😉😂) There was such a nearness to God that it was reported, "we didn't know if we were nearer to earth or nearer to heaven." Members of the church who weren't even at the meeting reported the same experience 20 miles away. All they knew was that they wanted to let the Holy Spirit have total control over their lives. Inspired by the Scripture Leviticus 6:13 ‘A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.' The congregation determined that constant prayer should always be lifted up to the Lord in their church. A rotation of 24 men and 24 women was started and continual prayer began on August 27, 1727. That prayer meeting lasted for over 100 years... The little church did grow, but never over 300 members (many of which were there at the beginning.) But over the next 100 years they would send out 300 missionaries around the world, multiple times more than any church like that had ever done before. It was their missionaries who met and inspired men like John Wesley, who would take their revival fire over to the Americas and become a pivotal part in the Great Awakening. What can we learn from the Moravians? Well, learning to stress our similarities rather than our differences would be a great start.
