Mr. Novak says his civil rights were violated, and he is trying to sue the city for damages. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit earlier this year, saying that the police had qualified immunity, and an appeals court upheld that decision. Now the high court is reviewing his request to take up the matter.

One of Mr. Novak’s lawyers, Patrick Jaicomo, said in an interview Monday that last month he contacted Jordan LaFlure, the managing editor of The Onion, which is based in Chicago, to make him aware of the case and see if he would be interested in helping raise attention.

“They heard the story, and they were like, ‘Oh my god, this is something that could really put all of our people in the crosshairs if we rub someone the wrong way with one of our stories,’” Mr. Jaicomo said.

In a filing that read in places like one of its articles, The Onion laid out why it believes the authorities in Ohio had acted unconstitutionally, sprinkling in sincere arguments in defense of parody while riddling the rest of the text with moments of jest and hubris — claiming, for example, a readership of 4.3 trillion, and also boasting that it “owns and operates the majority of the world’s transoceanic shipping lanes.”

[...]“This was only the latest occasion on which the absurdity of actual events managed to eclipse what The Onion’s staff could make up,” it said. “Much more of this, and the front page of The Onion would be indistinguishable from The New York Times.”

I think that people who balk at the phrase "all cops are bastards" might be helped out with "good cops don't last."

Sooner or later, every cop will encounter a situation where they can be complicit or try to do something about it. A good cop will try to do something about it. They will encounter immediate resistance, and will be pressured to shut up and be complicit (whereupon they cease to be a good cop). If they persist, they can expect to be fired, harassed, thrown in a mental hospital, or even directly physically attacked and murdered.

Hell, if they're in the NYPD, after they're done with you they'll probably make a commemorative challenge coin about it.

All cops are bastards because good cops don't last. You are absolutely not allowed to be a good cop.

I swear to god every new ep tv show/Jacob Anderson’s Louis gets more and more likable. He feels concrete and emotional and existential and desperate and lost. You have thematic echoes from the book character that have been placed on top of a man fighting with every part of his identity. Beyond the writing choices (which I love so far), Jacob is brilliant at switching between charming and unhinged in various scenes. I love how unlike 1920s Louis, 2022 Louis is (generally) calm and retrospective in a way the character admits he couldn’t necessarily be in the og 70s interview. His steady comfort and ease with Daniel in the modern scenes feels so right and so personal in a way that goes beyond script lines. I was so worried about liking tv show Lestat (Sam Reid ❤️❤️) that I never even considered I might end up really loving Louis as a main character until I started actually watching the show. Like GoT did NOT give this man enough to work with, seeing him thriving in a main character role is an absolute delight.

honestly i think it’s the knowledge that loustat is canon endgame in the books makes me so excited for the angst the show is about to throw at us with the inevitable destruction of their relationship. because at the end of the day, they’re still going to fall in love again and have another chance at being a couple so like honestly bring all the angst for season one. the journey’s gonna hurt but the destination will be worth it.
