So, I just wanted to post it here lol

I've seen a lot of posts calling Lilith Marius's toxic ex and while I fully agree that she is toxic I also think all the canon evidence points to her being his rapist, not an ex partner he had voluntarily. Evidence below the cut, CW for discussion of sexual assault (obviously) and spoilers for EoM through episode 31.

Looking at the actual circumstances of their first meeting, it's pretty clear that there's no way Marius could have consented to having sex with Lilith. When he came to her castle, he was "cold, starving, injured, and horseless, and so very [weary]"—not in a state to make judgement calls. Even after he eats, his mind is "full of exhaustion, wine, and a strange perfume that feels almost magical in its enchantment". At the very least he is drunk; more likely he is drunk and under some kind of magical charm. Those things would make any consent he would give dubious at best, and Marius himself recognized that there was something off about the situation he found himself in, but he "couldn't say no". (That phrasing sticks with me—it has a much different connotation that saying yes).

Even if Marius hadn't been under the influence, I don't think he would have said yes anyway. He knew that his fifth test was chastity, and thought the Duchess was married, which would have made it so even if he was attracted to her, he wouldn't have wanted to act on it (two different things).

Marius also shows signs of trauma after his encounter with Lilith. He is reluctant to have physical contact with people he is attracted to, even when it would confer a benefit other than just sex on him and his team. He insists that all sex will ruin his life, just like his encounter with Lilith did, and uses his vow of chastity as a shield to prevent it from happening again. When made to relive the memory during the ritual, he trembles, and when he sees Lethica's red eyes in the bell tower, he loses control and bites her, as if triggered to violence by the sight of something that reminds him of his rapist. After seeing the vision of his own assault, he insists both that he "should have known better" and that he was "enchanted" and "drunk", simultaneously realizing that he was forced and believing it was his fault. Lastly, Lilith's appearance in his life makes him feel that Lathander has abandoned him and that he is destined to be a monster forever, even though there was evidence of Lathander struggling to aid him in Druskenwald. Her presence makes him feel nervous and ashamed, and makes him feel like he is corrupted forever and unlovable by anyone but her.

Lilith's trickery and transforming of Marius into a vampire can also be read through this lens. After spending the night with her, he was left fundamentally altered, turned into something most people view with scorn and that cannot integrate easily into his former identity as a loyal knight and a pious man. Furthermore, he was left with cravings and urges that feel alien to him. They conflict with his morals, remind him of being violated, and make him feel like he is destined to violate others in the same way. The unholy nature of Marius's vampirism can be read as him feeling dirty and ruined—and yet the fact that he isn't actually undead but still a humanoid suggests that this is just an illusion brought on by his guilt.

I don't know if any of this is intentional, but I hope Marius's arc sees him accepting that he's a different person than the knight who started his quest but nonetheless turn away from Lilith and live as his own person.

One year later I return to my Legends of Avantris Tarokka (tarot) series and this time, gods dammit, I am sticking to it. The first card of the series I have lovingly named "She Does Tarokka Readings!?" is The Fool.

The Fool represents new beginnings, having faith in the future, improvisation and believing in the universe. And no one better embodies that our beloved Dhampir turned Vampire, Sir Marius Renathyr. Brave and Bold Sir Marius will follow his path and convictions to the end. Even if it means travelling into the unknown.
