Assessment 3- Statement
The aim of this work was to find the creative possibilities through erasure. Furthermore, the work asks the question- is to erasure really creation and is creation really erasure? Through the creation of this piece I became aware or the interrelationship between erasure and the other topics, chance and vagueness mostly.
The concept for this work is an extension from the assessment 2 video that my group made. In the video, we aimed to create new atmosphere through erasing and replacing. Similarly in this work I started with the foundation of two solid colours, black and blue, and then set about removing the paint with paint stripper. When painting the found surfaces, I added multiple layers. The first was white gesso, then two layers of either black or blue, and then a final layer of either black or blue. Once dried, I added paint stripper and began to work with removing the paint lightly with steel wool so that the under layers would become evident.
Although this work was initially meant to be an exploration of colour and texture, the work began to question the connective nature between erasure and creation. Through the process of removing the paint, the work became increasingly dynamic, and complex. What I thought was most interesting about the process however, was that the outcome was out of my control. The lines, textures, and colours created were all done so by chance- similar to Marco Fusinato's Constellations piece or the paintings of Callum Innes.

Inspiration #2
Marco Fusinato - Constellations
From his website:
A 40-metre wall with a 1.5-metre gap at each end is built to bisect the gallery. Hidden inside the wall are a series of microphones connected to a PA system. The entrance side of the gallery is empty. On the other side of the gallery, coming out from the bisecting wall a baseball bat is attached to a steel chain. The audience is invited to strike the wall. Their action is amplified at 120db.”

Callum Innes
These works by Innes, Untitled Lamp Black No.2, 2018 and Untitled Oriental Blue, 2017 respectively, have been of influence to me whilst undergoing erasure experiments.
I am specifically interested in the textures and colours in which Innes has been able to create by his process of manipulating paint whilst still wet

Assessment 2 - Time-based Collaborative: In 2011, Alfredo Jaar created his work May 1, 2011. This challenging piece consists of two screens, one depicting a white empty void and the other consisting of President Barack Obama and his political team watching this blank space. The erased image their eyes are latched to manifests the apparent video footage of the assassination of Osama bin Laden. Consequently, the true reality of the execution is questioned as the audience are only presented with an erased image — there is nothing there. Should we believe what society and the media show us? Similar to Jaar, our work set out to investigate how through the erasure of key elements of existing mediums (be they writings, recordings, video, etc) new notions and themes can arise. Through the process of erasing fundamental components of a ‘viral’ video, the infamous Kanye West 2015 VMAS speech, we were able to misconstrue the subject of the speech, allowing us to entirely change the atmosphere, and content of West’s monologue. Ultimately, this process allowed massive creative freedom as we found that the scope of which we could change things became unlimited. With close inspection of the original video, we noticed that West’s speech and movement felt sporadic and at times felt ‘unreal’. This led us to push this observation to an extreme by removing spoken dialogue in lue of ‘cards’ of speech in the style of early cinema. This ultimately changed the whole atmosphere of West’s monologue and allowed us to change what was then seen by pop culture as important speech from an important man, into something slapstick, comedic, and ultimately silly.

To experiment the concept of erasure, and using Alfredo Jaar’s May 1, 2011 (2011) work as a springboard. I decided to look at the potential of erasing aspects of historical events in order to create new meaning.
Simply, I decided to take a segment Adolf Hitlers January 30, 1937 speech and ‘erase’ the lines from the speech in order to create new narrative. I went into the experiment hoping to transform a message of hate into a message of love. However, this soon found to be almost impossible as there was no room to move really In his choice of vocabulary (surprise it’s all pretty dark)

Assessment 1
With this project, I have attempted to see to the extent to which simple found objects can be transformed and reimagined to create and give new meaning, whilst still holding onto original form and function.
The project itself took on many forms. Firstly, I liked the idea of transformation and seeing how far I could take the base material of a milk crate, both theoretically and aesthetically. Initially I started with the idea of transforming the milk crate into a vase, and then a more abstract sculpture-come-seating arrangement. However both designs were clunky and perhaps not a clear representation of where I thought the work should go.
However, my first experiment (a very quick video made in Photo Booth) made me interested in the way in which the form of the crate interacted with itself. I liked mostly that the outcome of the video was very digital looking, even though there had been very little and primitive editing. When I came to make the sculpture, again I was interested with how string simply overlapping and weaving with other string can create interesting patterns and shapes that would change whenever you looked at it from a different angle.
The final work, a reflection of each experiment and with a particular leaning towards creating new curves, shapes and angles, in my opinion did not turn out very well. Although you can see where the form has come from, it should have been pushed further and documented better in order for it to achieve it’s potential.

Experiment 4 (3.5?)
I was curious to see how simply inverting the structure of the cube-glass would look like.
I believe I tried to force this work too far, and perhaps it was better as a less stressed object. That is, the more I added to it, the less it seemed to hold relevance to the original idea (which was really just to see how the vase and the milk crate could interact with each other

Experiment number 3
This was an attempt at my original concept for the assessment. Simply I wanted to transform a milk crate into a vase. Furthermore, I didn’t really want to apply any statement or meaning to this work, but rather just experiment and see how the two staple objects (the vase and the milk crate) would interact with each other, and what possibilities would come from that.
I think visually there is a interesting (but obvious) clash between the materials. The rigid lines of the crate seem to move nicely upwards into the ‘plume’ of plant. Interestingly also is how the well the work works in the outdoor setting, with the two milkcrates almost creating a mirror image of each other, and similarly the tree and the plant (a branch cut off from said tree) have the same reflective quality.

Experimentation...
The aim of this experimentation was to find the extent to which new shapes can be created from a clear reference point. I think this was achieved quite well, and with further experimentation and research the concept could be pushed further into a sleeker and more concise design.
Interestingly, the work created an unexpected functional outcome. When four people are sitting on each of the crates, it creates a unique setting. That is, one is uncomfortably close to the persons they are next to and in front of. Along with the obvious visual cue of intertwined string, knees and hands are constantly bumping into each other, creating a distinct (yet forced) sense of interconnectivity.
This work would benefit from a more rigorous and methodical approach to construction. The slight lopsided nature of the cubes (?) does not reflect the intended outcome of the work, which could be overcome by a more scientific approach to construction.
