Media Psychology
Media psychology studies the effect media has on us and our relationship to it. Interest in and application of media psychology has grown a lot over recent years with the advent of new technologies and the integration of the Internet and social media as a constant presence in our everyday lives (McAuslan, 2020). The field is constantly developing as the media landscape changes.
Creators need to understand the logic that underpins an audience’s connection to media in order to garner the response they want: not just what works, but why. Otherwise, you have no way of improving or recreating success— you can probably think of a dozen terrible movie sequels or knock-offs that failed to capture what made the original appealing.

I just submitted my latest assessment. I won't go too far into it (the presentation is 25 slides long!), but I made a turnaround for a robot character and her name is J-113. She's the robot gardener of a game that I'm eeking towards making.
Here is the breakdown on context: the game, her as a character and her place in the narrative.
Tumblr media
The silhouette design tells you quite a lot about where my thinking was at the start and how it changed as I sketched.
Tumblr media
Figuring out the head took a fair amount of doing, I started by visiting my sources and sketching them to understand how one heads this sort of undertaking.
Tumblr media
I finally settled on this lovely, gummy granny head with her lil' ol' hair bun.
Tumblr media
I plucked the colours directly out of photos of Eze, the lovely small town in the south of france which acts as something of a setting inspiration.
Tumblr media
Here is the turnaround of the character. This one was done in photoshop from the start and with much too thick a brush, on reflection. She came out like she's meant to be in a children's cartoon: low detail, relying totally on appeal.
Tumblr media
By contrast, I drew this version of her on paper, digitised it and painted it and got a COMPLETELY different style again. Something I'll have to figure out, that.
Tumblr media
Here's what I'm happy with:
I didn't think I was even vaguely capable of drawing, let alone being able to layer draw on paper, digitise and create a whole-ass, posed character. I'm REALLY impressed with myself,
There's a lot of thoughtfulness in the design, I went to a lot of trouble to think of her accessories, how she would look because of her place in the world...
This was heaps of fun. I tore through paper just getting concepts down and iterating on the character. Once I get started I have such a blast and I've gotten SO much better in such a short span of time? That's awesome
And now some room for improvement:
my colouring is all very basic and flat, she could use highlights and shadows, as well as colour-blending,
I need to decide whether she has thick, visible lines or not and try colouring her one more time from that vantage,
As a character she is supposed to be old and bumped to hecc, so I need to give her more visible wear; scratches, dents, missing bits, ad-hoc fixes (tape, glue gun, cable ties),
Referencing kicked my ass and almost cost a 10% penalty, I need to develop a system to reference more effectively,
I really need to get more familiar with colour theory so that I can develop a stable of colour palettes I can rely on and make new ones as I need to

Unbelievable
Unbelievable
Unbelievable means not able to be believed, not like it's true. So great or extreme as to be difficult to believe; extraordinary. Unbelievable can sometimes mean that something is so good or amazing that it's unbelievable, but sometimes it can also express that something is so bad that it's unbelievable.
When it means good, I think it might be similar to words like amazing. Because they both need to be good enough for the audience to give an exclamation of admiration.
I searched for paintings that could be called "unbelievable". Firstly, there is the art of illusion. The creator creates an illusion by combining different figures and scenes, for example, the audience can see a face in the picture, but this face may be composed of two character, and the nose of the figure may be a house.
There are also "unbelievable" paintings, which often have a very varied range of colours and don't look like they exist in reality, but more like a dream. The color makes these art become "unbelievable".
I also searched for "unbelievable" statues. This is Damien Hirst's Demon with Bowl, a headless statue holding a bowl in its hand and covered with reefs and coral. The shape looks very strange and mysterious, and really gives people a feeling of "unbelievable".
There are also statues like this. The combination of figures and nature, is similar to the first example I searched for.
Mother Nature, Canada. Picture: Alamy
And then there are the strange statues. Most of these statues are called "unbelievable" and I think it's because they're very creative, they come from the whims of the designers. They are shaped in strange ways, and most of them blend in with the surrounding scenery in a clever way.
In Shanghai, China, there is the Shanghai Tower. It is famous all over the world for its asymmetrical shape. It is also an "unbelievable" building. It is "unbelievable" because it breaks the normal shape of the building. So "unbelievable" may also mean breaking the rules and innovation.
In New Zealand, one of the landscapes that is called "unbelievable" is Lake Tekapo, which is famous for its amazing seasonal Lupinus. Just seeing the pictures is enough to make me marvel. "Unbelievable" needs to be amazing.
New Zealand also has the Moeraki Boulders on the Koekohe beach, these boulders on the beach are formed by nature and are so "perfect" that you can't believe they are nature's work.
This website is a collection of "unbelievable" products. Most of them are cleaning products. Why do cleaning products have anything to do with "unbelievable"? I think most of these products are used to clean things that are hard to clean. People find it difficult to clean these things in their lives without the help of these products. If these products can easily help people to clean these difficult or troublesome items, then it will be "unbelievable". So "unbelievable" can also be something that is uncommon, or something that can be very convenient.
Netflix has a programme called 'amazing interiors', which takes people on a tour of all sorts of 'unbelievable' interiors. Most of them are amazing interiors, and some of them are great uses of space. So I think "unbelievable" can also be a surprisingly reasonable design. In lighting design, I think it can be the combination of colour and timing.
I think these are very similar to mesmerising and surreal and uncanny.
So I guess I could probably summarise these as "abstract". Abstract Art is a style of art in which shapes, designs, textures and colours are represented in a way that may seem unrealistic but emphasises mood or emotion. Abstract art is characterised by the use of geometric lines and shapes and bright, bold colours.
There is also "Amazing". To be unbelievable, it needs to be amazing, in addition to not looking real and being very abstract.
At the same time, I also searched some academic research, and most of these articles with "unbelievable" in the title or content are a "gimmick". The contents of these articles include all kinds of things, including reports of murders, the victory of the underdog team in a football or baseball game, and some experts' predictions about the future of sustainable energy.
So I think "unbelievable" is a very broad adjective with a very broad definition. For this project, my understanding is that "unbelievable" is first and foremost about wowing the audience. The colour palette can be vivid, using yellow, pink and blue if possible, and the Timing needs to be well coordinated, with the right lights in the right places. The dynamics of the lights could be varied, perhaps with a rotating effect. If I can make the audience feel amazing, great, then it is basically "unbelievable".

I usually don't post Feelings about properties I like, but I feel like I'm the only one who thought Blitzø was treated unfairly in Stolas' confession towards him. While Stolas rightfully understands that his arrangement with Blitzø was wrong, and made a good effort to make up for it, his decision to attach all of that to a love confession, and him getting upset when Blitzø calls him out on both that AND his proven disregard for many people beneath him in class status is. While understandable, pretty fucked up.
Not that I think the show itself is unaware of this, I just see far more people empathize with Stolas over Blitzø, and it's so weird for me given I walked away feeling the complete opposite about it. I do feel for Stolas, and recognize Blitzø was perhaps a bit too cruel in his assessment of the situation, but like. As brutal as it is to say, he really wasn't that far off the mark. In a way Stolas' reaction indicates how much more he needs to grow and reflect on how he's been treating Blitzø.
I mean, they both need to do some serious soul-searching on their relationship, but whereas Blitzø needs to learn how to accept love from other people, Stolas needs to learn how to give it, and what love actually is--and it's not a gift and a confession you spring on someone after months of essentially using them for meaningless sex and intimacy (which is exactly what he did, no matter what feelings he may have had for Blitzø).

isn't it funny how a ton of professionally diagnosed autistic people diagnosed in adulthood say that they definitely knew they were autistic before they were diagnosed but there's still a fairly large group of autistic people diagnosed as children who cling to the disproven idea that "you can't possibly know that you're autistic because not knowing is one of the symptoms! I didn't know before I was diagnosed!" like yeah no shit that's because you were 10 years old

Hypothesis
The scenario in the video is this: two children are playing catch indoors and accidentally knock over and break a vase or other fragile object. They start panicking. An adult enters and scolds them before cleaning up the mess. The children, having learnt their lesson, move outside before resuming their game.
Classical conditioning: the audience will find the object breaking to be more impactful or unexpected because the video starts with several throws between the children to be successful— they should begin to associate the ball being thrown with it being caught. If the first throw broke the object, it wouldn’t have the same effect, nor would it be as obvious as an accident.
Operant conditioning: the children are conditioned to change their behaviour (playing catch inside) because of consequence (breaking something/being scolded). The audience should understand this cause and effect, and may relate it to a similar occurrence in their own lives.
Video B will be more effective in communicating the story to an audience because the ‘characters’ move more in a way that shows how they feel. Viewers should be able to translate these movements into human behaviours they are familiar with (e.g. a triangle moving up and down a short distance quickly = a person being startled).

i think the fandom doesn’t capitalize on the fact that Alec is a older brother, that man probably has so much more black mail on Izzy and Jace then they do on him
#mood
Izzy and Jace have nothing they can use on Alec.
One: They didn't think they'd ever need to because they thought they knew what he'd do in most situations (say no and then begrudgingly help them anyway, and tbf to them, they're mostly not wrong pre-Magnus)
Two: He is so aggressively self-contained for survival reasons that the only 'secrets' either of them has on him are the facts that he's gay and he and his mother have a fucked up relationship and THOSE ARE NOT THINGS YOU CAN USE FOR 'friendly family blackmail'.
Three: Alec is a tactician, he is observant, he is ruthless. He knows everything Izzy and Jace have ever done and the fact that he (as far as we know) never uses any of it is amazing and a little heart-breaking because he could have manipulated and threatened the fuck out of them and made his own life so much easier and he never ever did.

why did my teachers think it was okay to give us like one single weekend to finish all of our midterm projects and study for our tests.
Tumblr media
#slight vent#i have 3 projects and 3 tests#i’m halfway through my lit/history project and halfway through my psych project#and maybe a quarter done with my programming project#which is fucking insane btw cause how tf am i supposed to code a whole video game in like 3 days on top of everything else 😭😭😭#and some things he hasn’t taught us and just thinks that we should just be able to figure out like HELLO???/?///#I DONT HAVE TIME TO TEACH MYSELF NEW CODE#ITS THE MIDTERM/FINAL FOR THE CLASS??????#and once the weekend starts i’ll have no one to trouble shoot my stuff and fix my bugs so literally i’ll be hopeless so 😭😭😭#my calc teacher JUST finished teaching us everything we need for the midterm TODAY. THE MIDTERM IS ON WEDNESDAY. BRO.#my physics teacher doesn’t let us copy down any of our idk test questions or take our old assessments home to study#*old#so we get to look em over for like 20 mins and hand em back. which doesn’t exact fucking help me when i’m studying for the midterm.#WITH NO STUDY GUIDE.#my teachers even said that this years midterms are worse than previous years cause they’re all in a row instead of split by a weekend#we’ve had 2 delayed openings and 1 early dismissal this week which means we have less time to work on our midterm projects in class 😭😭😭😭#i’m so overwhelmed i’m gonna explode#by the time i finish these projects i’m not gonna have anymore energy/time to study for my tests. WHICH IS THE HARD SHIT BTW.
