A few days ago I finished my first month of Famulatur, a mandatory clinical internship. I decided to go into neurosurgery and neurology, for two weeks each, and I learned incredibly much! My main chores were asking tons of questions, drawing blood, placing venous accesses and doing neurological examinations. Aside from that, I also got to learn basic suture techniques, assist in surgery and perform lumbar punctures, which was REALLY cool! At the same time, I was quite disillusioned by the amount of paperwork and the crazy working hours that are apparently sad reality in 聽the medical profession. As interesting and instructive as all of this was, I鈥檓 not sure whether I want to pursue a career in this field. I鈥檝e actually been questioning a lot of my future plans. Luckily, I still have a lot of time and many more internships ahead of me to figure this out.

These last few weeks have been weird. And by weird I mean "I feel trapped every single minute i'm inside that hospital and want to cry every now and then".聽
I like what I do, I enjoy studying pathology and analysing slides and writing reports, even grossing specimens (after four months of grossing just skin biopsies or an occasional breast), but that place and certain people are just driving my mad.聽
I know that medicine is difficult and doctors work long hours etc etc, trust me, I've done my share of long hours even if I didn't do overnight or weekend shifts (bless pathology residency). I've stayed at the hospital sometimes until ten or even eleven pm, having arrived there at 6:30 in the morning or earlier, doing my shit that ranges from signing reports, writing reports, studying, grossing, etc, and not being able to sleep or properly rest (pathology residency don't stay on call, therefore we don't "need" time off). Surely it's different from an ER or ICU shift, but you know, it's exhausting too. ANyway. What I saw during that internship is that we're overworker. Every resident I talked too (from Mexico, Austria and Italy) was surprised by how long we worked. What I want to say is that pathology is a thing that consumes energy in a different way but people seem to think that it's easy and all rainbows and ponies, and when we complain about being tired, other residents (or even the attendants) joke about how we actually have it easy.
I'm just tired and wanted to do more with my days than staying 12 hours (or more) at the hospital just to arrive at home eat, take a bath and sleep because on the next day I need to wake up at 5 am to spend another 12 hours at the hospital and repeat it all over again, always looking forward to the weekend.

hey! im a bit bored as well, so here is a message :) did you always want to study pathology, or was that something you decided after you got into med school? im trying to get into med school in brazil, so im suuuuper jealous of you lmao
hello! i decided to try for med in my last year of high school, so... almost knocking on the vestibular's door, but since then, I was thinking about pathology. Granted, I wanted to be a forensic pathologist, but it's complicated here in brazil, having the iML where the medical examiner is not necessarily a pathologist etc etc... I still love forensic pathology though, and this is the reason I went after pathology residency. I liked what I saw and dived right in. Right now, I'm finding out that I truly enjoy dermatopathology.
anyway, long story short: after I decided to do med, I soon decided I would give path a try. Then some stuff happened (I got involved in an accident inside the OR, broke some bones blablabla) and I ruled out surgery for me. That day was the day I set pathology as my goal in medicine.Looking back now, I remember when I was a kid and loved watching those medical programs about surgeries and weird diseases, or, even better, true crime tv programs haha

I'm back from Austria and I can just say that this short internship was what I needed to remember that I like to study. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to just take time to sit down and study* in residency here, but I'm trying to make it work
* of course we study, but not as much as we could, because we have not only so many cases to report and specimens to gross, but also silly tasks people ask us to do that could be cut short if other people did they work right
