oh and one more thing about patrick jane as a character. he's such a contradictory person. he's a lover not a fighter but his whole journey centers around hunting down and killing a dude. he drives his vintage citroen, wears three piece suits and is very cultured but he's boyish, he's silly, he's fun, his mannerisms are light and flowy. he works with the police but he doesn't care about the law or law enforcement as an institution. he always makes sure he points out he's not police, he's just a consultant.
and here's the kicker. despite his massive trauma, he's just a happy go lucky guy. he always find the beautiful things in life, he's goofy, he loves a laugh, he loves messing with people. and that is an active choice he makes. he actively chooses to focus on the good things and live with a smile on his face, otherwise he'd fall apart. and that in itself is an act of bravery

This is a great gif set! Both Simon Baker and Fred Koehler are doing A+ work here. The subtle transition Tommy makes from idiot to evil genius in just a few frames is really quite effective for both this scene and the overall story.
"Hello. Good to meet you."
I love Patrick's face here, that wide, appreciative smile. He admires what Tommy's been able to get away with here. He always appreciates a good con, and Tommy has made the authorities look like fools while managing to avenge his friend's death at the same time.
It's in this episode that Patrick actually lets his temper show to a suspect during questioning. He tells the sheriff, "Well, you should be terrified. I hope you burn like a candle, you miserable son of a bitch."
It's not unusual for Patrick to show disdain to an authority figure, but he shows real contempt for this man who conspired to murder a friend because of money.
It's interesting to compare Patrick's satisfaction at catching Tommy in this episode to his attitude towards Max Winter in Red Carpet Treatment (3x04). In both cases, Patrick wants to know if their revenge was worth it. He honestly wants to know.
Tommy says, "You wouldn't understand," but if anyone would, Patrick would. He's put himself on a road to damnation, and he's determined to march to the end, but he'd like some confirmation that the price he is paying is worth it.
In 3x04 Patrick wants Max Winter to get away with his attempted revenge for his wife's rape and murder. And, although he hates guns, he keeps the gun Winter gives him with him and eventually uses it to wound and immobilize Red John so he can strangle him to death with his bare hands. Revenge begets revenge.
A side note: It's a little hard to believe that the same serial killer in this episode was Chip in Kate & Allie!

Oh, spare me your moralizing. I know what revenge costs. It's worth the price.

Processing grief through music
My Spotify Wrapped list consisted of songs that I got from Mentalist fanvids that I listened to over and over and over and over again trying to regulate my brain chemistry when my mother was dying from pancreatic cancer. And then during the aftermath.
And Bach, which I listened to a lot of when I was trying to write copy for clients in a loud co-working space.
It's not because I particularly like Olly Murs. It's because watching and obsessing over The Mentalist and Patrick Jane (and Jisbon) was how I dealt with (or didn't deal with) my mom dying.
So thank you, I guess?
