I spent time in the garden today, carrying out some pruning of an apple tree. I love listening to bird song that pervades our current self isolation. Another piece created for a postponed exhibition called Northern Town at @civicbarnsley . These two are connected and displayed together. -------- Comment: Decade 60s Both these pieces reference 'A Taste of Honey' by the British dramatist Shelagh Delaney (written when she was 19). It was initially intended as a novel, but she turned it into a play, premiered in 1958. The play was adapted into a film of the same title in 1961. A Taste of Honey is set in a run-down, post-industrial area of Salford, it comments on, and puts into question, class, race, sex and gender in mid-twentieth-century Britain. It was at the forefront of the 'kitchen sink' genre revolutionising British theatre and screen at the time. The film is beautifully shot in black and white, directed by Tony Richardson and cinematography Walter Lassally. This partnership also filmed 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' (1962) based on a short story by Alan Sillitoe. The quote 'I dreamt about you last night and fell out of bed twice' is from play and film, but also references the influence this body of work created in the 60s had on later generations of artists. Here it references the line being used again in the Smiths song 'Reel around the fountain' (1984). Salford was a strong creative connection for both Delaney and Morrissey. A photo of Sheila from the 60s featured on the cover of the album 'Louder than Bombs'(1987). -------- Exhibition: Northern Town Northern Town visually explores the realities and mythologies of life in the hinterland communities of the north, it offers personal interpretations of changing spaces, places and people over a fifty year period. The exhibition references how the north has been defined in writing, film and television during the 20th Century, and questions what has changed, what remains and what the future holds.
