i'm sorry for being so quiet on here the last several months. i've felt really tired and burned out due to irl things and i'm considering overhauling my muse list to remove some of the muses i'm not writing and/or don't have much muse for at the moment. i'm kind of tempted to put this blog on (probably temporary) hiatus and move lex to a solo blog, because even though i do have some muse for a few other characters (namely dick), i kind of think being able to focus on one muse might allow me to focus more.

the difference between lex luthor in dc comics vs lex luthor in smallville is that if comics lex ever managed to successfully kill superman, he would feel triumphant for all of a week then realize his life suddenly felt empty and purposeless before having his 50th "the world needs superman, actually" realization and trying to clone him (again) whereas smallville lex would orchestrate things so they died together and he'd be crying the whole time

thinking about sv s7 lex again and how he thinks killing lionel will be cathartic, that it will somehow make things better because his father is no longer in his life. but it doesn't feel like closure -- he doesn't regret it, exactly, because lionel was a horrible man and he genuinely believes the world is better without him, but it doesn't make anything better, either.

it doesn't change the decades of abuse and manipulation, it can't save his mother, it couldn't save his friendship with clark, it won't bring julian back from the dead. the trauma doesn't go away. he is still a monster 27 years in the making, and the worst part is, it isn't even truly a victory over lionel because lex is becoming exactly the sort of man his father had been trying to turn him into all this time.

s7 lex is a man who is at rock bottom, the lowest place he has ever been in a life full of extreme highs and lows. he's lost lana (which he knows was his own fault), he's lost his best and only friend, he's murdered his own father, and then finally -- at long last -- he gets confirmation of what he's suspected since s1, what he learned and forgot in s3, that clark isn't human. and lex is convinced -- because he is deeply mentally ill and paranoid and (i mean this in the literal, clinical sense of the word) delusional -- that clark has to die, and that lex has to be the one to kill him.

in that moment in the fortress, at the end of s7, lex genuinely thought he was going to die. he's always had a strong streak of passive suicidality, but there is a difference between not caring if you die and actively wanting to. clark was the only person left in his life that he cared about, and god, they'd hurt each other so much over the years but lex still sees them as two people whose destinies are intertwined. and clark needs to die -- deserves to die, in his mind -- but so does he.

lex's love for clark and his hate for him are so intrinsically intertwined that he doesn't know where one ends and one begins. he wants to hurt him and he doesn't want to live without him and he wants clark to be as obsessed with him as he is with clark. lex's last words to him were i love you like a brother and he held clark tenderly before consigning both of them to their deaths, because in lex's eyes it's the fate they both deserve.

at some point i need to tally up the number of times that lex either clones or makes an android of or otherwise tries to replicate someone important to him bc as much as everyone jokes about the whole “babytrap” thing, that wasn’t the first instance of lex trying to clone someone in his life. it wasn’t even the first time he tried to clone superman.

hubert pales at the implication, gloved hands tightening around each other where clasped behind his back. he can see the intention in the set of her jaw, expression cool and hard as steel, and it makes something twist in his gut. this is hardly a new argument between the two of them, but there is something different in her voice this time, a resolve he has never seen in her before. there is very little that truly frightens the emperor's right hand –– the one man that had ever inspired any true fear in him died by his own hand some five years ago –– but this? this fills him with a deep, creeping dread, the likes of which he has not felt since the first time he had thought her lost to him.

strange, how peaceful the city should feel this night, even with the enemy camped outside their doorstep. rain would be more apropos, yet the night is warm, almost pleasant. ( ferdinand would call it a good omen, but ferdinand was lost to them months ago, felled by the very sword lady edelgard had once hoped might be their salvation. no –– instead, to hubert, it feels like mockery. )
