Five ways to build a better shower
Tumblr media
1. Spacious shower If you're gutting your bathroom, think about opening up the space to expand the size of your shower. Typically, showers are 36 inches wide by 36 inches deep; but now, luxury-style showers measure at least 48 inches by 96 inches. You can also create more shower space by selecting certain types of shower doors. Sliding glass doors can be a hassle to clean, as dirt can get into every little crevice. Hinged, glass doors, or if you have the space, a larger opening with no shower door at all, are better options for creating a modern, streamlined look. 2. Bring in the light Do you have a small bathroom and don't have room for a spacious shower? Not to worry - make the shower look bigger with lighting. Adding a skylight above the shower will make it feel larger in size and give a sense of being in a high-end resort. The materials you use on the door can also brighten things up. Choosing a glass door lets more light fill the space while showing off a fancy showerhead or tile. The glass can be frosted for added privacy. 3. Showerheads in all shapes and sizes Showerheads come in a wide variety of styles to add the desired look - and functionality - to your bathroom. From rainshowers to traditional showerheads and body sprays, the combinations are almost endless. No matter what style or the number of sprays you choose, make sure to include a hand shower. It makes cleaning the shower a breeze, will help with washing the family pet, and gets all those hard to reach places during your daily shower. Moen now offers both multi- and single-function hand showers. The multi-function hand shower features four settings: a focused rinse, full spray, massage and combination full spray and massage. The new single-function hand shower is available with a slide bar, allowing everyone in your family to adjust it to the perfect height. Best of all, both use up to 20 percent less water than the industry standard 2.5 gallons-per-minute models. You can now install and use a hand shower as your primary showerhead, without a major remodel, thanks to Moen's new, shower arm cradle. Instead of attaching a bracket to the wall, the shower arm cradle easily installs onto the existing shower arm. 4. A place to sit and relax Shower benches and seats are becoming an essential component for rest and relaxation. It's a great way to add a spa-like element to your shower but also provides extra safety for your family. You can build a bench into the shower or attach one that folds up against the wall. Different styles and materials are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Teak is a popular choice in the shower as it withstands different temperatures, is resistant to bugs and humidity and is also easy to clean. 5. Storage in the shower Finally, build niches in the shower wall to fit all the bottles used on a daily basis. Creating several built-in areas will eliminate reaching for bottles on the shower floor and make it easier for the family to stay organized. Make sure the shelves slope toward the shower to keep the areas from getting moldy or full of soap scum. If you aren't putting in new shower walls, you can also create more storage with a sturdy, corner shelf. Choose one with at least three shelves so Mom, Dad and the kids can each have their own shelf. With these few key upgrades, you'll soon have the spa-like shower you've always desired. For more information about Moen products, visit moen.com or call 800-BUY-MOEN (800-289-6636).

Decoding your digestive health
Tumblr media
Digestive health plays a major role in achieving overall health and wellness, and according to digestive health expert and author, Dr. Steven Lamm, understanding how to manage digestive health issues is the best way to achieve long-lasting relief and overall health and wellness. Take care of your gut and it will take care of you The digestive system, also referred to as the gut, is a unique and perfectly created system that, when impaired, can increase risk of developing infectious, inflammatory and functional GI diseases, as well as immune-mediated and metabolic disorders. Good digestive health is also recognized by many as being a requirement for overall good health. "When we take care of our gut, we take a step toward achieving overall health and wellness," says Dr. Lamm. "However, many modern day triggers, such as stress, medication and foods low in nutrients, can cause problems that affect our day-to-day lives." These triggers disrupt the balance of the digestive system and manifest as many of the issues people experience, including: * Heartburn/frequent heartburn * Gas/bloating * Irritable bowel syndrome * Diarrhea * Constipation * Nausea/vomiting According to Dr. Lamm, it is also important to know that some digestive health issues can be caused by underlying conditions or even genetics. If digestive health issues are persistent, worsen, or are accompanied by blood, unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite, a physician should be consulted. Getting to the gut of the problem For many, navigating the world of digestive health can be overwhelming. How do you determine what your specific problem is and what might be triggering the issues? And how do you figure out which available treatment may help manage the issues? When trying to understand and seek the best course of action, Lamm suggests keeping in mind the following tips: 1. Be aware of the existence of issues; your digestive health should be seamless 2. Pay attention to your body and triggers; know how to identify and self-diagnose 3. Establish an easy fiber routine, such as including Benefiber(R) in your diet, to help maintain a healthy digestive system 4. Use appropriate over-the-counter medications to help manage digestive health issues, such as Prevacid(R)24HR for frequent heartburn, Gas-X(R) for gas and bloating 5. Consult a physician if issues are persistent, worsening, or if there is bleeding, unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite For more on Dr. Lamm's digestive health information and tips, visit www.easiertodigest.com.

Hiring tips to help avoid nanny nightmares
Tumblr media
(BPT) - Movie nannies might work for a spoonful of sugar, and hugs and kisses, but in the real world nannies - no matter how loving and attentive they are - need to get paid a salary. When you're ready to hire a nanny, you can go through the most rigorous background checks, confirm references, interview extensively and hire the caregiver of your dreams - and still find yourself in the middle of a nanny nightmare if you run afoul of tax laws. Fortunately, online payroll services can help take the confusion out of paying your nanny, and ensure he or she gets paid on time and according to the law. Although nanny-hiring goes on year round, many more families may undertake the task as the school year gets started. SurePayroll offers some tips for hiring and paying a nanny: * Make a list of nanny must-haves, such as schedule availability, disciplinary practices, experience with multiple kids, etc. Next, create a list of preferences that are negotiable. Setting your priorities before you begin looking for a nanny will help you make the right decision. * Involve others, including people whose referrals you trust, such as family members, friends, teachers and co-workers. Ask them for help in finding candidates, and don't forget to involve your kids. Give them a few minutes to meet each nanny candidate during the interview; after all, they'll be the ones most affected by your choice. * Remember, you're entering a business relationship - albeit one of the most important ones in your life. Keep things professional during the interview and be sure to ask all the tough questions about topics that are important to your family. * Don't overlook online resources and professional organizations. Selection services like SitterCity can help you identify and screen appropriate candidates, and the International Nanny Association provides information, advice and a directory on its website. Be sure to use background checks, which can easily be done online, check multiple references and personally interview every candidate at least once before making a final decision. * Discuss wages and base your offer on the nanny's level of experience and what other nannies in your area are getting. Federal law requires nannies must get at least minimum wage, and they may be entitled to overtime. * Prepare paperwork to ensure you can avoid tax penalties. You'll need a 1040-ES, a signature-ready Schedule H, the annual 1040 and a W-2. If you pay a seasonal nanny more than $1,000 per quarter or $2000 per year, you'll probably need to pay the "Nanny Tax," which includes Social Security, Medicare and federal unemployment tax (FUTA). * Set up payroll for your nanny, and plan to pay him or her by either direct deposit or check. You'll need to make provisions to pay Social Security, Medicare, FUTA and other payroll taxes, including any state or local taxes that may apply. Track tax deductions, medical benefits and other insurance. Remember, mistakes can cost you: failing to pay the IRS nanny taxes can lead to back taxes, penalties, interest and fines of up to $25,000. An online payroll provider like SurePayroll can help you stay on the right side of the law by managing the pay, tax and filing tasks for your nanny. Log on to www.surepayroll.com to learn more.

Fun tips for fantastic family vacations
Family vacations are always a great time for family bonding and exploring new places. With some careful planning, the trip can be packed full of fun from the minute you lock the front door to the minute you arrive back home, exhausted and ready to share stories of your adventures with friends and family. Traveling with children does require careful planning, but taking a little extra time to plan ahead will make your time spent together that much more rewarding. Take these ideas into consideration as you organize your family trip. * Traveling organization - If you're on a road trip this spring or summer, keeping track of all the snacks, games and travel necessities isn't easy. Put a few household items to use, and you'll be able to keep everything where it belongs, instead of having it rolling around under the seats. For example, a shoe organizer hung over the back of the front seats helps to keep all children's toys and activities within reach. And a divided cardboard drink container is an excellent storage kit for needed items like snacks, tissues, hand wipes, etc. For airline travels, the mantra "less is more" comes into play. Have each child pack one carry-on, such as a metal lunchbox or a backpack, with all their traveling necessities. Crayons and coloring books, as well as small game books like crossword puzzles or word searches are recommended. * Create "snacktivities" - Package the snacks you'll be eating on-the-go with activities to keep the kids busy. For example, a new coloring book with a juice box and a snack will help everyone forget they're on a long trip. Pack satisfying snacks such as Lance Xtra Fulls Toasty and ToastChee sandwich crackers, which are made with real peanut butter and deliver up to 6 grams of protein per serving. * Make the hours work for you - If you have the ability, schedule your travel time during bedtime or nap time. Plan frequent breaks where everyone can get out of the car and run around, releasing pent up energy. Try to avoid driving during rush hour traffic, which would add additional stresses to everyone in the vehicle. For airplane travel, avoid leaving on peak travel days if you can. * Get creative with snacks - Mix up the traditional to keep the snacks interesting, which can help make the travel time appear to pass much quicker. Create your own trail mix with protein-packed Lance snacks of salted peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds and Star Bites. Or give the kids paper plates, sandwich crackers, cheese and fruit make their own "snack creations" in the shapes of animals. Visit www.lance.com for additional snack recipes and snacking ideas. * Play together - When in doubt good old-fashioned car games such as "I Spy" can provide hours of entertainment for the entire family. While in the car ask kids to look at billboards, road signs, license plates and buildings to find the letters of the alphabet in order. For instance, to find an "A" the child might see Applebee's and say it aloud, then move on to finding the letter B. You can also play counting games with younger children. Count blue vans, find 10 horses, count rest stops or water towers. How many people pass you on the highway? Count those, too. There are endless possibilities. Family vacations are a lot of fun, and if your trip is well-planned, everyone can return home with great memories and stories to share.

Turn video games into family time
Tumblr media
If you have children who love video games-- and an estimated 95 percent of them do-- or are interested yourself in video gaming, consider the positive aspects of how playing video games can benefit your family, and others: * Educational components - Video games have plenty of educational opportunities designed for the youngest to oldest members of the family. Some games work on math skills, others teach history lessons and still others work on teaching different languages. Research studies have also shown that fast-action games improve visual acuity and attention to details - especially when it comes to reading the fine print. * Physical fitness - Gaming doesn't have to be a couch potato activity any longer. Modern gaming systems encourage players to stand up so the technology can track body movements to create the action happening on the screen. This physical activity can help improve muscle tone, balance and provide a cardio workout while the player is engrossed in the game play. * Social connectedness - With gaming systems encouraging multiple players at once, and online communities established for players to talk about specific games, players can connect and socialize across the globe. On the local scale, a family video game night promotes a bit of competitive fun among family members, while still enhancing the physical and educational skills that children and adults can glean from video game play. This Nov. 2, take advantage of the positive benefits of playing video games, and push them one step further by signing up for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Extra Life event. Families can register to participate in this give-back gaming celebration, asking supporters to pledge at least $1 per hour of game play on Nov. 2. In previous years, Extra Life participants have raised an average of $200 each, which benefits CMN Hospitals across the country to fund the most pressing local pediatric needs. Families can find their area's member hospital and sign up to start their fundraising quest at www.extra-life.org. Once registered for Extra Life, invite friends and other family members to also get involved in raising money for CMN Hospitals. Consider blogging or using social media to report your family's participation in the day's activities, and document the different games played each hour. You can even switch it up and play a mix of video, board and lawn games. Relays are a great way to keep the energy going while allowing regular breaks. And consider keeping the tradition going strong by establishing a video game-playing night once a week or once a month. Push your children to the physical and educational games, and see if you can keep up with them. By joining them at the console or computer, you'll turn video gaming into family fun time-- and show them that play can do the world a whole lot of good.

Surgery insight: What happens while you're under anesthesia?
Tumblr media
What you should know before surgery Before you schedule your next surgery, ask the hospital the following questions to help ensure a successful procedure: * How long does the surgical procedure take? * What can be expected for recovery? * Who are all the members of the surgical team? Will a physician anesthesiologist be present? * What should be done to prepare for surgery? (i.e. eating restrictions) * What pain medications will be administered before, during and after surgery? * Who is going to care for me immediately after surgery? * Who will communicate the status of surgery with the patient's loved one or caregiver? Who is providing your medical care? Regardless of the type of surgery you will undergo, you'll likely require anesthesia or sedation. It is important for you to know who is administering your anesthesia. As the leader of the Anesthesia Care Team, your physician anesthesiologist will care for you before, during and after surgery. You, like the majority of patients, may be unaware that anesthesiologists are in fact medical doctors. Physician anesthesiologists have 12,000 hours to 16,000 hours of clinical training and 12-plus years of extensive medical education which covers the entire human body and all of its systems, including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and management of a full range of medical conditions and needs. Physician anesthesiologists are able to intervene should complications arise in a routine surgical procedure or in an emergency. Anesthesia is safer than ever because of the work and research of physician anesthesiologists. However, each patient comes with a unique set of circumstances and health risks that require the medical training of a physician anesthesiologist. Take for example, the story of a woman who was administered a routine epidural during childbirth. Without warning, the patient experienced cardiac arrest due to an amniotic embolism. If it was not for the split-second diagnosis and action of Patrick Allaire, M.D. (Ames, Iowa), who was able to restart the patient's heart and ensure a successful Cesarean section, the outcome would have been grave. Despite an 85 percent fatality rate during such procedures, both the mother and her child survived. What is the role of my physician anesthesiologist? ASA President-Elect Jane C.K. Fitch, M.D. notes that physician anesthesiologists play three key roles before, during and after any surgery. Here's what you can expect as a patient who will be undergoing surgery: 1. Before surgery, physician anesthesiologists draw on their advanced education and training to diagnose illnesses, ensure you are in optimal shape for surgery and help fine-tune surgical plans. 2. During surgery, physician anesthesiologists manage any medical conditions you have, as well as anything that arises during the procedure. They help ensure you remain comfortable and manage pain. 3. After surgery, physician anesthesiologists address any complications from your medical condition or from the surgical procedure itself, helping you to heal properly. Many people are surprised to learn physician anesthesiologists also have active roles outside of the operating room. Dr. Fitch explains, "After some surgeries, patients may have issues that require close care. Some physician anesthesiologists specialize in critical care medicine to take care of those patients. Likewise in terms of pain medicine, physician anesthesiologists are able to provide comprehensive pain medicine care, either acutely right after a surgery or procedure, or on an outpatient basis for chronic medical conditions." When seconds count, when a life hangs in the balance, when medical emergencies or other complications occur, you and your family members need to know that there is a physician anesthesiologist responsible for your care. For more information on patient-centered, physician-led anesthesia care, please visit www.asahq.org/WhenSecondsCount.

Make laundry safety a priority this summer - and always
Tumblr media
(BPT) - Sunnier skies and summertime fun are just around the corner, and with them comes plenty of outdoor activities like long days at the playground, sporting events and barbecues. With so many options, the last thing most people want to think about is household responsibilities; but all that outdoor fun can add up to a lot of laundry. During the summer, when we'd all rather be outside, it can be all too easy to turn on the "autopilot" switch and rush through household tasks like laundry. However, during times like these it's important to take the time to think about your daily routine and how to better incorporate safety. Kids are curious by nature and get into everything, making it vital that all laundry and cleaning products are kept out of reach of children. In addition, with the recent introduction of single-load liquid laundry packets - a product that's easy-to-use but needs to be handled differently than liquid detergent - it is a good time to revisit your laundry routine to ensure your children's safety.- There are small things you can do before, during and after your laundry routine to help keep your laundry room as safe as possible during the summer months and throughout the year. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) offers the following steps to help you take your laundry routine off autopilot: Before you start your laundry: * To reduce the risk of curious children getting into single-load liquid laundry packets, as soon as you bring them into your home, immediately store them safely away, either out of reach or within locked cabinets or drawers. * Keep single-load liquid laundry packets in their original containers with the labels intact to prevent misuse. Teach young children that laundry products and their containers are not toys. * Familiarize yourself with laundry product labels and know where the safety information is located on the label. * In the event of an emergency, also keep the Poison Control Center phone number (1-800-222-1222) available at all times. While doing laundry: * Focus on your laundry routine and reduce distractions by doing this task in the absence of young children. * Know exactly how to handle single-load laundry packets: - Do not let children handle laundry packets - Do not puncture or pull packets apart - Packets quickly dissolve upon contact with water, wet hands, or saliva so it is necessary to keep them dry - If packets rupture, they can release contents into the eyes After you finish up: * Always close the single-load liquid laundry packet container or pouch and make it a habit to put them away immediately after use. * Never use empty single-load liquid laundry packet containers for storage of any other materials, especially for anything intended for human consumption. As the kids enjoy the long summer days at home, enjoy the season along with them. Having a laundry routine that isn't on autopilot will alleviate worries and ensure that your family is safe and healthy. For additional laundry safety information and ways to keep you and your family healthy, clean and safe this summer and during the months ahead, visit www.cleaninginstitute.org/laundry.

Tumblr media
(BPT) - Hooray for a holiday. You've got the day off, you've sent out the backyard barbecue invite and all your nearest and dearest are coming over to eat, drink and be merry. So, what's next? Whether you're a seasoned entertaining pro or a new host, The Home Depot has tips to make your backyard an oasis for a long holiday or any weekend. A week before About a week before the long holiday weekend, check off your heavy cleaning jobs like power washing, mowing the lawn or cleaning the grill. Whether you're washing the outside of the house or the back patio, new innovations like the Ryobi 3100 psi Pressure Washer make the job a breeze. Powered by an 187cc Honda engine, it has five spray pattern adjustments and a 25-foot hose - making it easy move around freely and customize water flow for different areas. With the neighbors over, you want to be the envy of the neighborhood where the grass really is greener. -Give it a fresh mow and clean up the edges with a hedge trimmer. Outdoor power tools that use the latest technology like the Ryobi ONE+ Lithium Ion Hybrid Trimmer make the job easier. The battery charge lasts four times longer, the tool is lighter and easy to maneuver. Cleaning the grill used to mean getting a bicep workout, but simple cleaning products on the market today make it a lot easier. An example would be a non-toxic, multipurpose cleaner like Simple Green Concentrated All-Purpose Cleaner and Mr. Clean Outdoor Pro Magic Eraser - versatile enough for your grill, patio furniture, car rims and hand tools. If you're in the market for a new grill, it's time to strike while the iron is hot with great holiday deals - a Brinkmann 5-Burner Gas grill is $399 with a free propane tank. You'll look like a gourmet using this grill with its 634-square-inch cooking area - it can handle burgers, veggies and your other sides all at once. Color is a huge trend in grills this year - the Brinkmann 5 Burner makes a stylish statement in copper while other grills, like the Aussie Walk-A-Bout, pop in cheerful bright red. Nothing is more inviting outdoors than some fresh flowers in pots or in the garden. The Home Depot offers easy options like the new Drop 'n Bloom flowers or stress-free design options like Thriller, Filler, Spiller. For Thriller, Filler, Spiller, choose your favorite large plants - the thriller - to serve as the focal point. Smaller plants - the filler - are used to fill in the space between the focal point plants. Finally, low-growing, cascading plants - the spiller - are used to cover the ground of the garden. The day before Prep your decor for tomorrow. If you're looking for a creative way to display your American flag, try a DIY project like The Home Depot's DIY American Flag, made from lumber. This folk-art inspired flag is an easy project to complete in 24 hours. Look to Pinterest for table inspiration and know that a beautiful tablescape doesn't have to be expensive. Combinations of burlap, mason jars filled with wildflowers and potted plants are beautiful and inexpensive. Small, clustered arrangements aren't as pricey as large floral arrangements and make a bigger impact. Buy your supplies today and check off any last-minute cleaning projects. Prep your arrangements and water the plants - one less thing to deal with tomorrow. Weekend time: Relax and barbecue. Congratulations on being the envy of the block. With all the prep work you've done, all you have to do today is decor detail. Assemble your table and check off the last of your finishing touches. Now, put your feet up on your patio furniture and wait for the guests to arrive.

Easy tips for a manicured lawn
Tumblr media
(BPT) - The days are getting longer, the grass is growing and yard work season has begun. Many homeowners strive to have the best lawn in the neighborhood, but the task ahead can often feel daunting and time-consuming. Although yard work can be overwhelming at times, the steps to a great-looking lawn are easier than you think. To get started, here are a few tips for giving your yard that finished look:
Keep grass approximately 2 inches in length and only take off 1/3 inch of new growth.
Alternate the direction you mow each session. If you mow in the same direction every time, the wheels will create a rut in the grass.
Plant flowers around the yard for a pop of color. Using mulch in flower beds will also add detail to your landscape.
Use string trimmers around trees, rocks, fences and other obstacles to give your lawn a polished look.
Use a broom to clean grass clippings and soil from pavement and walkways.
Yard work can feel easier and even enjoyable when using the right lawn care tools for the job. According to Troy-Bilt, a leading manufacturer of outdoor power equipment, one of the quickest ways to give your lawn a manicured look is using a string trimmer. It can handle everything from cutting down weeds to trimming around trees to cleaning up grass under decks. String trimmers are the most versatile tool every homeowner should have in their shed. "Lawn mowers can maneuver around obstacles and larger plants, but it's usually hard to get into tight spaces," says Heidi Ketvertis, director of marketing communications for Troy-Bilt. "A string trimmer can get into places a lawn mower can't reach and really give your lawn that polished look." Making your lawn stand out as the beauty of the block will take some work, but the end result will be worth the effort.

How to choose a custom fitted kitchen
Tumblr media
Traditionally, the role of a kitchen was restricted to cooking and dining. However, in the modern home set up, kitchens have evolved as a space for social gatherings as well. As the most important place for family conversations, the look and feel of kitchen has a significant impact on the members of the family. A well-organized kitchen enhances the pleasure of cooking and dining. To serve the new role of a social space, fitted kitchens provide the best solution. Sporting excellent designs, these structures come with a great sense of luxury and functionality. Planning for a Fitted Kitchen: What to Look for? Fitted kitchens are available in a range of designs. To select a kitchen suited to you and to your home, consider the following points: • Analyze your existing kitchen and make a list of your requirements. Focus on the ways to simplify the process of cooking. For example, you can estimate the number of cabinets required for storage. • Measure the kitchen area with great precision. Create a rough diagram of the kitchen with exact measurements. Mark the placement of doors and windows in the kitchen. It will help you select from different fitted kitchen designs available in the market. • List the number of appliances, such as refrigerator, microwave, washing machine and so on. It is best if you can plan their placement according to your requirements, well in advance. The concept of the golden triangle (installing refrigerator, cooker and sink to form three points of a triangle) is considered an ideal placement. • Consider the supply of services such as electricity, telephone line and water. Also, mark the expected drainage system in the layout. It is confusing to consider these small, but essential, details once you set out for the actual shopping. Thus, planning always helps to make an informed decision. How to Choose a Fitted Kitchen Fitted kitchens are the order of the day in the building industry. There is a huge and bewildering range of different varieties of fitted kitchens, from the traditional to the ultra modern, available in a wide selection of colors, woods and finishes. This makes choosing one rather difficult. To make this process easier, one should stick to the basics, such as: • Requirements: Based on the details mentioned in the layout plan, select fitted kitchen designs that match the space and appliance requirements. Look for what facilities are covered in a kitchen design. • Cost: Pricing remains the determining factor for a majority of the families. Look for designs that fall within your budget. Remember, investment in a fitted kitchen is a smart decision. It makes your kitchen appear luxurious and adds to the market value of your house. • Longevity: Examine the raw material used to manufacture different components of the kitchen. Are they durable enough to pay for their cost? • Lifestyle: Mostly, people want to buy a kitchen that will reflect their standard of living. If budget is not a limitation, you can look for luxurious kitchen designs. • Installation cost: Check the cost of kitchen fitting. This will vary between suppliers and manufacturers. • Service: Opt for a company that offers high quality after-sales service. Read blogs, testimonials and forums to know which companies you can rely upon. You'll want to use an organization that takes away their unused waste materials and cleans/vacuums behind them, leaving just your tidy new kitchen. A fitted kitchen is a big investment when it comes to home remodeling. It is essential to buy a good quality fitted kitchen that aligns with your requirements and has a long life. To this end, you should search the market for different products and companies. This will help you get the best deal at an affordable price. For example, oak kitchens are considered a good choice for their fine texture and longevity. However, you may prefer traditional pine or even a sleek modern kitchen.

Don't let pests invade outdoor spaces
Tumblr media
New insect species make their way into the United States every year by hitching rides in shipping crates and on automobiles, clothing and shoes. They hide in produce, plants and firewood while they are transported to uninfested areas. Upon arrival, invasive insects quickly begin to attack their new habitats, making themselves at home. Many different types of termites, beetles, carpenter ants and bees bore into trees and make themselves at home in wood structures, such as decks, play sets and patio furniture. Numerous varieties of caterpillars, moths and mites fashion meals out of plants, discoloring and deforming leaves and sometimes stripping foliage away completely. "While it's difficult to prevent invasive insects from making their way into your outdoor spaces, using an integrated pest management approach (IPM) can stop them from doing harm to your family and the environment," says Aaron Hobbs, president of RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment) - a national organization representing manufacturers, formulators and distributors of pesticide products use around the home and yard. IPM is a common sense approach to managing pests that combines property maintenance, watching pest populations and applying pesticides when necessary. "Keeping outdoor spaces clean and tidy, without piles of wood or trash, will make them less attractive to invasive insects. When used properly as part of an overall IPM approach, pesticides are the most effective way to remove damaging pests from your property and provide protection from future infestations," adds Hobbs. "When selecting a pesticide product read the label to ensure you've got the right solution for your pest and location," says Hobbs. "There are many products available for consumers to use when eliminating invasive insects from outdoor spaces. Consumers should remember to always read and follow all label directions." The globalization of markets and growth in both national and world travel raises the numbers of invasive insects finding new habitats in neighborhoods across the country. Following an integrated approach that uses registered pesticides is the best strategy to take back outdoor living areas and keep them pest-free so you can enjoy the summer.

Why more people are installing saltwater pools
People no longer have to tolerate the eye-burning, nose-curdling sting that comes from chlorine. Saltwater pools only have one-tenth the salt of ocean water and about one-third when compared to  human tears. They are also gentler on the skin and hair than traditional chlorine pools. And pool owners don't have to purchase, store, and handle harsh chemicals, so maintenance is easier, more convenient, and saves time and money.
More chlorine pools are being converted to salt water and today there are more than 1.4 million saltwater pools in operation nationwide. An estimated 75 percent of all new in-ground pools are salt water, compared with only 15 percent in 2002, according to data published in Pool & Spa News.
Since the Evergreen Commons senior center in Holland, Mich., converted its 65,000-gallon pool to salt water, members have been pleased with the results. "The minute you walk into the pool area you notice a big difference," says Jodi Owczarski, the center's community relations director. "There is no longer that chemical smell. People also tell us that the water is much softer. In the old pool, people said they sometimes had to wash twice to get all those chemicals off, but in this pool, they only have to wash once. All in all, people have been thrilled with this new system."
In saltwater pools, chlorine is automatically produced as water passes through the generator. As the water exits the generator and enters the pool, the sanitizing chlorine reverts back to salt, and the process repeats itself, conserving salt and keeping sanitizer levels balanced.
Saltwater pools require less maintenance than traditional pools, but pool owners still should test weekly for pH and chlorine, and monthly for other water balance factors and for salt levels, which can drop due to splash-out, rain and filter back-washing. Most pool owners test their pool water themselves with test strips and periodically bring a sample in to a pool retailer for testing.
Anyone who has made the decision to move to a saltwater pool should make certain they use salt specifically designed for that use. An average 20,000 gallon pool requires 530 pounds of salt at startup; with quantities that large, even small amounts of contaminants within the salt can cause pool problems. That's why ultra-pure salt is best for salt water pools. Salt water systems can also save money in the long run over chlorine-based alternatives.
There have also been questions about the effect of salt water on pool construction materials, decks and surrounding structures. When pools are properly constructed and normal maintenance is followed, salt water has no effect on pool finishes, equipment and decks. Most materials are suitable for salt water pool construction, and most kinds of stone and decking materials will last if treated and sealed properly and periodically rinsed off.
If you're considering a saltwater pool, talk to a knowledgeable builder or retailer, or get some insight from other saltwater pool owners. You can also find more information at the Salt Institute website.

Do-it-yourself weekend warrior survival guide
Tumblr media
(BPT) - It's the do-it-yourself dream: deciding on the perfect DIY project just as the weekend finally arrives. All the supplies have been purchased and you're ready to dive right in. However, the enthusiastic start of the project doesn't always end in completion. "Knocking out a big home improvement or do-it-yourself project in one weekend can be a rewarding task, but it is also challenging and can be taxing on your knees, feet and back when standing in the same position for several hours," says Mark Clement, home improvement expert and co-host of the national radio show MyFixitUpLife. Whether you are woodworking at your workbench or staining a piece of furniture in the garage, Clement offers these tips to make the most of your DIY weekend projects while also feeling comfortable enough to successfully finish them:
Focus on form and technique. When learning a new technique, go slowly, step by step, until you've mastered it. Allow your body to become accustomed to the various motions required. Moving efficiently is one of the best ways to avoid injury.
Stay hydrated. Make it a priority to drink at least 125 ounces of cold water each day. Staying hydrated is important when exerting DIY energy, especially in the summer heat. So whether you're digging up the garden, roofing the shed, or wrenching in a no-AC garage, keep a water bottle or sports drink close by.
Create a comfortable workspace. Be conscious of how long you are standing in the same spot working on your project and how your back feels. To relieve pressure and soreness on feet, knees and back, use a durable mat that is engineered with an optimal balance of cushion and support.
Dress appropriately. Flip-flops and sandals do not offer the balance, protection and support that a sturdy closed-toe shoe or work boot does while tackling home improvement projects. Even if you have the grace of a ballerina in the workshop or yard, it is remarkably easy to drop things on your feet and it only takes a small distraction to create a big problem.
Know your limits. When you only have a weekend to finish a big project, you might be feeling the pressure. Before the project even starts, accept that it may not all go according to plan. Plan for a few different scenarios and remember that you can always ask for help.
Have a first aid kit. Even if you are being extremely cautious, accidents can happen and it's best to be prepared. Keep a first aid kit with all the essentials (antibiotic ointment, bandages, burn cream, etc.) near you at all times and seek professional medical help if necessary.

Birdfeeder basics: Bring on backyard birds with the right feeders
Tumblr media
(BPT) - When you dine, do you prefer clean and attractive tableware? Does ambiance enhance your enjoyment of your food? Birds feel the same way about their dining habits - the type and cleanliness of your bird feeders directly affects the number and species of birds that will visit your backyard this season. To attract birds, you need to understand not only what they prefer to eat, but how they like to eat it. For example, while many species prefer seed, some birds like to eat their seed from elevated platforms, others prefer hanging feeders and still others are content to forage on the ground. All birds appreciate a clean feeder to prevent the spread of disease, and none of them like those pesky, seed-stealing squirrels any more than you do. The bird experts at Cole's Wild Bird Products offer some guidance for choosing the right feeder styles to attract the maximum number of feathered friends to your yard: * Keep it clean - Everyone knows you should clean your feeders regularly to prevent disease, but many feeders are a pain to disassemble, clean and reassemble. Many people keep feeders less than pristine because of the hassle of cleaning. Look for feeders that make the process easy. All Cole's tube feeders have a Quick Clean feature that allows you to remove the bottom of the feeder with the push of a button for easy cleaning access- no need to completely disassemble the feeders to clean them. * Tube feeders are terrific - For versatility and wide appeal, it's hard to beat a tube style feeder. These workhorses of the feeder world can handle seeds both large and small - from sunflowers to petite mixes. Tube feeders make great all-purpose feeders or excellent starter feeders for people just beginning backyard birding. Most songbirds will happily dine at a tube feeder. * Some seeds are special - Niger is a favorite seed type for finches, siskins and several other appealing species, but not all tube feeders can handle this oily seed. If you'll be serving niger, consider a specialty feeder like the Nifty Niger Feeder. The feeder dispenses the seed through special, tiny holes to limit the amount of waste. * Cater to the clingy - Some birds, such as chickadees, titmice, woodpeckers and bluebirds, like to cling to the feeder. For these birds, a mesh feeder can be just what the diner ordered. Mesh feeders satisfy a bird's desire to cling while also keeping larger birds from hogging the feeder. The Mighty Mesh Feeder is great for serving Nutberry Suet, Suet Kibbles, Suet Pearls, raw peanuts and any sunflower-based seed blend. * The beauty of bowl feeders - Bowl feeders are another versatile style, and are great for serving not only seeds and seed blends, but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet in either kibble or pearl forms. The Bountiful Bowl Feeder comes with an adjustable dome cover that you can raise or lower to prevent larger birds and squirrels from getting to the food - and it also helps protect feed from rain. * Hummingbird feeders are something to sing about - Hummingbirds are endlessly fascinating to watch, but you have to be quick to catch a look at them. Your best opportunity is when they're eating, and a hummingbird feeder can help extend your viewing time. The Hummer High Rise feeder gives hummers a penthouse-view with elevated perches and keeps ants out of the nectar with a special built-in ant moat. * Those darn squirrels - As much as you enjoy watching their antics, you probably don't want squirrels on your bird feeder. These persistent bandits can wipe out a seed supply in minutes and damage even the best-made birdfeeders. One way to keep squirrels away from all your feeders is to install a Tough Bird Feeder Guard from Cole's on your existing feeder poles. The simple device uses static pulse to train squirrels not to climb on feeder poles. Use your favorite feeders on your own shepherd staff or pipe-style poles and add the Tough Bird Feeder Guard to keep squirrels away. Only the tube portion of the guard is charged, so the pole and birdfeeder are safe to touch for humans and birds alike. For more info on birdfeed blends and where to buy, visit www.coleswildbird.com.

Most Americans don't have life insurance, but wish they did
Tumblr media
If you know you need life insurance, but still don't have individual coverage, you're not alone. According to the Life Insurance and Market Research Association, most Americans say life insurance is important, yet only one-third of them are covered by an individual policy. That's the lowest level in 50 years.
"Most Americans know life insurance protects their loved ones against financial hardship in the event of an unexpected death," says Brian Murphy, who heads up The Hartford's life insurance business. "But 40 percent of consumers get so discouraged by how long it takes to buy a permanent policy that they simply give up without getting the coverage they know they need."
Applicants who want to buy life insurance are sometimes faced with perplexing forms and an approval process that can take more than a month to complete.
Murphy says there are new ways of buying life insurance that take the pain out of the process. He also has some suggestions for how to improve on the old way of doing things.
"When today's consumers are used to buying products online and receiving them at home within 48 hours," Murphy says, "they have little patience for waiting a month or more to receive a new life insurance policy."
Fortunately, consumers can help streamline the application process. Murphy offers four tips for speeding things up:
* Do your homework first. Find out about your options before you fill out a single application. You should know how much insurance you need, what type of policy you want and the terms and premium you can live with before you submit an application to any insurer.
* Check your credit report before you apply. Many insurers take your credit score and habits into account when determining your life insurance premium. Knowing your score in advance can help ensure there are no surprises when you get your approved policy and the bill for your first premium.
* Be thorough and honest on the application. Virtually every insurer will ask health-related questions, and many will also require a health exam. Being less than truthful about weight, lifestyle habits and health conditions can cause your application to be delayed or even rejected.
* Allow sufficient time when scheduling your health exam so that neither you nor the examiner feels rushed or pressured. Ask what the exam will entail and if there are any requirements, like fasting or drinking lots of liquids. When making the appointment, also ask if you will need any additional tests - such as an EKG or X-rays - and find out if you can arrange for those to be done quickly.
* Consider taking a new approach. Consumers aren't the only ones who recognize the importance of accelerating the application process; insurers do, too. The Hartford, for example, recently introduced a new patent-pending application process it calls Issue First. With Issue First, applicants answer eight questions and sign and file their application forms electronically. Issue First trims the time it takes eligible clients to receive a policy down from 48 days (an industry average) to as little as 48 hours.
"By creating a new way of assessing a person's risk factors and accelerating the process, consumers can now get life insurance coverage in a fraction of the time it used to take," Murphy says. "And that means far more people are getting the coverage they really need to protect their families and loved ones."
In a pilot conducted by the company, clients who opted for the Issue First process ended up buying a life insurance policy 95 percent of the time, compared to a 65 percent closure rate for clients who took the traditional application route.

Creating an island paradise: Tips for adding an island in your kitchen renovation
Tumblr media
(BPT) - Custom cabinetry, granite countertops, reclaimed wood flooring and accents, and top-of-the-line, high-tech appliances - what more do you need to make your kitchen renovation perfect? How about adding an island? Designers and builders across the country are pointing to the addition of an island as the must-have upgrade for kitchen renovations this year. Homeowners are embracing the island, and what's not to love about it? Adding an island can dramatically alter a kitchen's appearance, provide additional storage space and work area, and create a fresh focal point for family meals. What's more, common challenges that have historically held homeowners back from adding islands - such as the difficulty and high costs associated with adding plumbing drainage in the center of the room - are easier to solve than ever. Plumbing problem solved While you could add an island without plumbing, having a sink in an island can improve the workflow in a kitchen and open up counter space elsewhere. Plumbing an island can be problematic, however, if your home is built on a slab or a crawl space. The cost of cutting through concrete and adding piping can be prohibitive. Above-floor plumbing can solve the problem. Manufacturers make a variety of pumping systems that can eliminate the need to cut concrete and reduce the cost of installing plumbing in a new island.  "Cutting through concrete to install plumbing can easily account for 50 percent of a renovation budget," says Chris Peterson of Saniflo. "Homeowners may decide to abandon the idea of an island altogether when they face that kind of cost. Above-floor plumbing allows them to add an island, hide a single drain pipe in a decorative column, and achieve the kitchen of their dreams at a fraction of the cost of traditional plumbing options." Top island trends Islands are increasingly becoming the focal point of kitchen renovations, serving both practical purposes and as design statements. More homeowners are replacing traditional dining tables and breakfast nooks with spacious islands that feature seating. "Islands are replacing tables," said Audrey Macdonald of Creative Interiors By Audrey in Mississauga, Ontario, in the National Kitchen & Bath Association's 2015 Kitchen & Bath Style Report. In addition to seating, homeowners are incorporating restaurant-quality fittings into islands, adding charging stations for the family's personal digital devices. They're also choosing architectural and design touches such as decorative legs, and countertops and cabinetry that contrast with those around the perimeter of the kitchen. Kitchen renovations continue to be among the most popular home improvement projects and can offer homeowners a high return on their investments. A major kitchen remodel costing about $56,000 can recoup nearly 68 percent of its cost when you sell your home, while a minor remodel in the range of $19,000 can yield a 79 percent ROI upon resale, according to Remodeling Magazine's Cost vs. Value Report.
