Neve noticed it pretty quickly.

Of course she would. 

There is little that does not find its way into the ponderings of her mind. A twitch in someone’s expression, the shadow of tenseness in a suspect’s shoulders, a tell that one thinks they’re good at hiding.

And so, the first time Lucanis does it, she thinks it is sweet.

A chaste kiss against her knuckles. Fingers holding tightly onto hers as he bends them into his lips. The tickle of his facial hair onto her skin.

She smiles after the initial curiosity, her muscles relax into him and she allows Lucanis to keep himself on her until he decides to let her go.

Even if he doesn’t want to. And she can tell that he doesn’t, with the way it takes him another minute before he lets her fingers out of his own.

The second time he does it, her eyebrows perk up. Already familiar with the notion, but still there is an element of surprise.

But by the third time she catches on. It isn’t the kiss. Or the wayward smile that lingers on his face. Or even the way he can’t let go even after he has prolonged his affections.

It is the audience.

Whether it be a room with only Rook, or the a meeting amongst the entirety of the Talons. 

It is to claim her.

A signal to all, the moment she enters a room, that she is spoken for.

When they are alone he greets her with a nervous kiss on her lips. As if still he needs her confirmation. To which she reassures him with the forcefulness of a secondary peck.

But when she enters a room that he is already residing, he runs up to her and takes her a hand.

Between her knuckles he bestows his lips, and his eyes turn up to look at her.

He is a romantic after all.

And as much as it is for them both, the reality lies in the reaction of others. It is for everyone to know that she is his, and he is hers.

Innocuous and polite, yet it reads all the signs he needs.

Neve always finds it amusing, watching the faces of others. The way their heads try their best not to tilt, or the edges of their lips begin to turn either way. It lets her know what the others think, not that it matters when it comes to what she has with the crow, but it is good information to know.

And then one day she returns the gesture.

In the same manner as he, and this time in a room with some Shadow Dragons. One coughs to hide their reaction and another tries not stop his eyes from popping out of his head.

But it is Lucanis that is most taken aback.

Eyes widen at the gesture, before gradually he begins to grins from ear to ear.

The blush on his cheeks is so warm, Neve can almost feel it radiating off of him.

And as she lowers his hand, he holds tight before reluctantly letting her go. But they only part for a sliver of a second, before he wraps his arm around her waist and pulls her into him with a thud as their sides collide.

She laughs.

Oh how he loves her laugh.

Her seals it with a kiss on her forehead. Then to her temple, and then her check.

Another to prolong her laughter. To which she happily obliges.

And the presences of the Shadow Dragons in the room is not acknowledged again for another few lingering minutes.

A special night for you

　夜の帳が下り、空に星が滲み始めるころ。ルカニスは手早くナイフを扱いながら、台所で静かに準備を整えていた。 　淡い香草とにんにくの香り。貝類と白身魚の潮の香りが重なり、鼻孔に広がる。彼の動きに無駄はなく、魚の身を削ぎ、火加減を見ながら、もう片方の手ではワインソースのとろみを調整する。

　彼女から引き出した一言がきっかけだった。 　部屋のテーブルには、既に食器が整えられ、室内にはキャンドルが灯っている。白い皿に飾られた食事は、見た目にも香りにも十分な満足を与える仕上がりだ。 　ただ満足はできない。彼女に喜んでもらえなければこの夜に意味が無いのだから。

柔らかな布地の感触と、心地よいぬくもり。 ルカニスはナーブの膝に頭を乗せ、ゆっくりと目を閉じた。

指先が髪を梳く感触に、ふと喉が鳴る。 彼女の手はひんやりとしているが、優しい。 時折、指が耳元をかすめるたびに、心臓がわずかに跳ねる。

「こうしてると、あなたって猫みたい」

ナーブの声は、くすくすと笑みを含んでいた。 ルカニスは目を開けず、ただ喉の奥で低く唸るように応える。

ナーブは楽しげに指を絡め、今度は少しだけ爪を立てて、軽く頭皮をなぞるようにする。

「……っ」

ルカニスの喉から、思わず小さな息が漏れた。 甘い痺れが背筋を走る。

「ん？　気持ちいい？」

「……お前、わざとか」

「どうかしら」

ナーブはからかうように微笑み、指の動きを緩める。 だが、今度は逆に、手のひら全体で包み込むように優しく撫でた。

ルカニスは無意識に彼女の手首を掴んでしまう。 逃がさないように、もっと触れてほしいと願うように。

「仕方ないわね」

ナーブは笑いながら、もう片方の手を伸ばし、ルカニスの頬をそっと撫でる。指先が耳の後ろをなぞると、ルカニスは微かに身じろぎした。

「……私を甘やかしすぎだ」

「バカね、あなたほど私を甘やかす人なんていないわよ」

ナーブは苦笑して、そっと顔を近づける。 ルカニスが目を開けた瞬間、ふわりと唇が触れた。

「……！」

驚いたように固まるルカニスを見て、ナーブは満足げに微笑む。

「はい、おやすみなさい」

言葉とは裏腹に、ナーブはそのまま、ルカニスの髪を撫で続けた。

　暖炉の火が静かに燃えている。薪がはぜる音が響く中、ナーブは膝に一冊の本を開いていた。ルカニスの隣を当然のように陣取り、細い指先がさらりとページをめくる。 　ルカニスはやや深く腰を下ろし、カップを片手にコーヒーを飲んでいた。立ち昇る湯気は、コーヒー豆の香ばしさと少しの甘みを含んでいる。 　ナーブが黙々と本を読んでいる間、ルカニスは彼女が読書に没頭する姿を時折盗み見る。ふと、彼女の手が止まり、指先で本の端を軽く叩く仕草が目に入った。考え事をしているときの癖だ。 「……何？」 　気づいたナーブが、視線を向ける。 「いや、お前の読む速度が速いなと思ってな」 「慣れよ。活字とは長い付き合いだもの」 　ナーブはそう言って、また視線を本へ戻す。だが、ルカニスは小さく息をつき、手にしたカップを彼女に差し出した。 「少し飲むか？」 　ナーブは片眉を上げて、それをちらりと見る。 「あなたの分は？」 「まだお代わりはある」 　ナーブは少し考えた後、受け取った。カップを持つルカニスの指に自分の指が触れる。ほんの一瞬だったが、彼は微かに肩をこわばらせた。 「……ありがとう」 　コーヒーを一口含み、ナーブが一つため息をつく。 「……ん、やっぱり美味しい」 「当然だ」 　ルカニスは短く返しながら、ふっと目を伏せた。彼女がコーヒーを飲む仕草を、何気なく目で追ってしまう。ナーブが使ったカップを、自然とまた自分の手に戻すと、彼はそれをそのまま口へ運んだ。 　ナーブはその様子を見て、クスリと笑う。 「……間接キスだけど？」 　ルカニスの手が一瞬止まる。しかし、彼はそれを意にも介さないように、静かにカップを傾けた。 「……気にするような間柄でもないだろう」 　涼しい顔で返したつもりだったが、ナーブは楽しげに微笑んで、彼の腕に寄りかかった。 「ええ、そうね。でも、そういうことを言うならもう少し照れずに飲んでみたほうがいいわよ？」 　囁くような声に、ルカニスはわずかに喉を鳴らした。 　くつろぐナーブの体温が伝わる。暖炉の火よりも、もっと近くに感じる温もりがそこにあった。
