Ali in the Jungle
In 2015 and 2016 I went with a friend to some of the refugee camps near to Calais where a lot of refugees tried to get to Great Brittain. Near to Duinkerke was a refugees camp called ‘The Jungle’. The refugees lived under miserable circumstances in a small wood. They build up a tent camp and there lived about 1500 refugees who escaped from the warzones in Iraq, Syria, and Iran. We brought food
and baked pancakes for the refugees and they where very happy to see us, and we made a lot of friends there. Ali Hassan became a good friend of us and he helped us with baking pancakes every time we
came. Later that year he managed to escape to Scotland. Today he lives in Edinburgh where he works in a restaurant. We visited him in the summer of 2019 and we had a really good time and it was very
special to see him again. On the photo you can see Ali next too his tent that burned down because of a gas explosion. All his belongings where burned in the fire. Luckily he was not in his tent at the time of
the explosion. Ali found a new tent and got some new clothes, and was still full of faith that everything would be better soon. He had a strong positive mind and had a lot of plans for the future.
For this exhibition called ‘On the run’, at NDSM- Fuse I made Ali’s tent to show you how terrible the circumstances can be in a refugee camp.
