Hello. The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, and Butterfly Dream. Since our debut, something that BTS has come to abide by as a way to guide our direction was that we would always tell the stories of our present selves. So, because we were students at the start of our debut we talked about school, and we sang about our dreams and our hopes for happiness. 2016 came around, and almost all of the members entered the Golden Age of their lives, their 20s.  After the BTS’ foundation, the 3-part school series, was set down we did a fair amount of consideration regarding what to talk about next. In reality, it seemed the answer was already there. That keyword was “youth”. The place, time, situation that us seven members are all in.. In the time between being a “boy” and an “adult”, there is still a rough and inexperienced sense of maturity. Yearning. Longing. Wandering. And what can be seen as the most “beautiful” time in our lives —As though we were waiting for it, we arrived at the symbolic words, “HwaYangYeonHwa (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life)”.

Korean Tattooist on the Korean Tattoo Industry

Some people get tattoos out of a naive rebellion, some get them as a way to cover up their scars or insecurities using art. Some get tattoos to mark a special point their lives they they don’t want to forget. No matter how much thought you might put into your tattoo, it’s still possible to regret it afterwards. Because of that, I tend to spend a lot of time consulting my clients before they get a tattoo. Though I have been doing this work for such a long time, there are people who tell me that they regret their tattoos and still, there are also many people who tell me that getting a tattoo changed their life for the better. 

You may already know this if you’re interested in tattoos, but currently the industry is experiencing a huge “Korea” craze. There have been a growing number of foreigners visiting Korea to get tattoos, and foreign studios have even been trying to pick up a lot of Korean artists. Slowly the number of talented artists working within the country are decreasing, and more people working abroad, but the reason for that isn’t just because they receive more respect and better treatment as artists. 

Korea is the only country in the world that still regards tattoos as a medical procedure. For a very long time, tattoo artists have made tremendous efforts towards legalization, but due to opposition by the national medical community, they never succeeded. One of the reasons these people give for their disagreement is sanitation problems involving instruments such as needles. Now and again there are stories reported of people reusing hospital needles, but I think that no matter which community you are in you will be able to find a group of people that are outside of your control. If sanitation is a concern, then wouldn’t it make more sense to create laws to make sure that the people giving tattoos are trained in sanitation and have gone through the certification process? 

 As a result of the growing demand for tattoos in Korea, there is now an excess of artists, and I understand that a large number of them are working without proper training in sanitation. Furthermore, there are a lot of artists who give tattoos to minors who still may not be capable of making clear judgments. If we ignore this, the problem is only going to grow larger. Even if every tattooist in the country is put away in jail the tattoo industry will not end. It will only become more secret and underground and the situation will worsen.

I am most happy when giving tattoos and I want to continue doing it. As a citizen of this country I want to be recognized for my work and become a daughter that my parents can be proud of. Everyone here calls it “Hell Joseon” but I like Korea. I would like to live and work under the protection of the country that I was born in. I ask for your support, thank you. 

타투는 어떤이들에게는 치기 어린 반항일 수도 있겠지만, 어떤이들에게는 상처나 컴플렉스를 가려주는 그림이 되고, 어떤이들에게는 인생을 살면서 잊지 않고 싶은 것들의 기록이 되기도 합니다. 아무리 신중하게 선택을 하더라도 후회할 수 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 저는 타투 전에 상담을 오래 하는 편입니다. 그렇게 오랜 시간을 들여 작업하더라도 타투한걸 후회한다고 하시는 분들도 있었고 타투를 한 후 인생이 긍정적으로 바뀌었다고 하시는 분들도 많았습니다. 

타투에 ���심이 많으신 분들은 아시겠지만 현재 타투도 한류 열풍입니다. 한국 타투이스트에게 작업을 받기 위해 한국에 방문하는 외국인들이 많아졌고, 해외 타투 스튜디오에서도 많은 한국 타투이스트들에게 러브콜을 하고 있습니다. 점점 실력있는 작업자들이 국내에서의 활동을 줄이고 해외 활동을 늘려나가고 있는데요. 단순히 해외에서 아티스트로서 존중받고 좋은 대우를 받기 때문만은 아닙니다. 

한국은 전세계에서 유일하게 타투를 의료행위라고 여기는 나라입니다. 오래 전부터 타투 작업자들이 타투 합법화를 위해 끊임없는 노력을 했지만 항상 대한의사협회의 반대로 이뤄내지 못했습니다. 이들이 반대하는 이유중 하나가 바늘 등의 기구 위생문제인데 500원 정도 밖에 안하는 바늘을 재사용하는 사람은 거의 없을겁니다. 가끔 뉴스에 병원에서 주사 바늘을 재사용한다는 얘기가 나오는데 이렇게 어느 집단에 가나 통제가 안되는 사람은 있게 마련인 것 같습니다. 위생문제가 걱정된다면 위생교육을 받고 절차를 밟아 자격이 되는 사람들만 타투를 할 수 있도록 법을 만들면 되지 않을까요.

현재 우리나라의 타투 수요가 늘어남에 따라 공급 과잉 상태입니다. 수많은 타투이스트들 중에 제대로 위생 교육을 받지 않고 타투 작업을 하는 분들이 많은걸로 알고 있습니다. 아직 판단력이 흐릴 수 있는 미성년자에게 작업해주는 분들도 많습니다. 계속 이렇게 방치해 둔다면 나중에 더 큰 문제가 생길 수 밖에 없지 않을까요? 설령 우리나라 타투이스트들을 작업 못하도록 모두 잡아간다 하더라도 타투는 계속해서 이어질 것입니다. 더 음지로 숨게 될 것이고 상황은 더욱 더 악화되지 않을까요? . * 저는 타투 작업을 할 때가 가장 행복하고 앞으로도 계속 작업을 하고 싶습니다. 한 나라의 국민으로서 제 직업을 인정받고 부모님께 떳떳한 딸이 되고 싶습니다. 다들 헬조선이라고들 하지만 저는 한국이 좋습니다. 제가 태어난 이 나라에서 보호받으며 일하고 살고싶습니다. 많은 분들이 응원해 주셨으면 좋겠습니다. 감사합니다.

[20150923] BTS @star1 interview: “BTS’ Song of Youth” (Translation)

BTS, through youthful passion and sweat, are filled with the most beautiful and happy time of life, ‘화양연화’(The Most Beautiful Moment in Life). The boys, who debuted in 2013 and once sang of the teenage dreams, happiness, and love that made up the ‘School Series’, have quickly grown up into the young men that are now representing the youth of people in their 20s. What story of youth will BTS tell us in the future? We asked them, as they end ‘The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt.1’ and get ready for ‘pt.2’.

Q: In one interview you said the music BTS is looking for is “youth”. Right now, how is youth to you? Is it clear or blurry?

RM: Sometimes it’s clear, sometimes it’s blurry. Like being right in between of the ocean and the desert? Even on the days when I feel like I’m in the desert there are moments when it’s like I’m in the blue ocean. It often changes depending on the moment.

Q: At the start of your debut you sung about school, and this year you’re singing about youth. If that’s the case, what kind of transformation will BTS make in the future?

RM: As time goes on, won’t the music we make change? What I know for sure is that we’ll be making music for people around our age. Two years ago we talked about school, and this year we’re talking about youth. We haven’t decided anything for sure but we want to tell the stories of these people who are listening to our music.

Q: In tvN <Problematic Men> you’ve gotten attention as a “Man whose brain is sexy”. What do you think is the standard for for a smart & sexy man?

RM: It’s about how a person carries himself, and if you learn something when you converse with him, I think that alone makes a person sexy. Something more detailed would be that he also has to be take charge of himself and have his own principles. And if he is also able to convey that to other people, I think that person is really cool.

Q: If you could pick one celebrity who meets those standards, who would it be?

RM: One of the people I appeared in <Problematic Men> with, Ha Seokjin hyung. I can’t say in one word what makes him sexy but there are a lot of things I learned from him. He doesn’t make people uncomfortable and he makes you feel relaxed. That’s a great ability. Also he always lifts the mood. He’s not so much in charge of himself but he makes you listen to him when he speaks. He has a strange charm. Soft but strong.

Q: A lot of times some rappers will express hip hop through dissing other people or cursing mercilessly. For people who aren’t used to that culture, that can sometimes be uncomfortable. They don’t understand why they have to go that far.

RM: Hip hop culture can be seen as open in some ways, but in other ways it is something closed off that only people within it can understand. The rough language that comes from it have been a unique trait that has held hip hop together since long ago. There is a part of it that the general public has to respect but I don’t think it’s good when those kind of harsh words are abused.

Q: ‘V’ is a peculiar stage name. What meaning does it have?

V: I originally had three to choose from. I had to choose between Sis, Lex, and Vee, and Vee seemed okay so I decided on it. But the company said ‘Wouldn’t it be better if it was just one letter?’ so then it became V. I still haven’t gotten used to my name. Haha.

Q: Compared to other idols, what is a strength that only BTS has?

V: We’re full of crazy energy. But only in the dorm. Since we have freedom in the dorm it’s really fun. Especially Jungkook. No one can beat him. Just his presence alone is funny but he always makes us laugh with jokes he prepares for us.

Q: If you look at the date of the tracks uploaded onto BTS’ blog, it seems like you guys are always working on music whether it’s during promotions or not.

V: Originally the four vocals, including me, weren’t the members who worked on music. I started making songs after getting interested watching the rapper hyungs. To be honest I thought that not just anyone has the talent to make music. But at the company those things don’t matter; they tell anyone to try and make music. So we freely wrote lyrics and melodies, and the producer said my song was good so he put it on our last album “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, pt.1”. After that we even bought equipment to do it more professionally. We plan to work even harder (on music) in the future.

Q: The seven of you live your lives, promote, and also make music every day. Do you not have any trouble/drama?

V: Seriously, we’re with each other all day, 24 hours, without missing a single minute. We all know each other well so we don’t fight now. But since I only look at their faces I just want to see some unfamiliar people’s faces for once. Haha. The world itself is like the inside of a well but since I only see the same faces all the time it feels like an even deeper well. (laughs)

Q: Each member has a distinct personality, it seems like everyone would have their own role in the dorm.

V: First, Jin-hyung is like a mom. He cooks well, he’s tidy and he even cleans well. He takes care of the members too. Suga-hyung is like a dad, he fixes the broken things in the dorm. Stuff like lamps, toilets? Rap Monster-hyung really seems like an older brother. He’s always breaking things, he’s really fun. J-hope-hyung is really talkative so he’s like an older sister. And Jungkook and Jimin are the youngest ones who like to play jokes.

Q: Back in 2010 when you were active in the underground, I once saw a song made by ‘Gloss’ on a portal site. Later I found out that was your song. The song’s video compiling photos of the 5·18 Pro-Democratic movement* left a deep impression. I’m curious about how you made the song.

(*5·18: Democratic uprising that occurred May 18, 1980 in Gwangju, Korea. Left an estimated 606 people dead)

S: I think it was in high school? There was a song festival in Gwangju. Was it the 5·18 festival? I don’t remember exactly, but I made that song at the same time as the contest and released it onto a portal site. I made the song with good intentions. The timing was exactly that time in May too. Even though it didn’t go to the finals I hoped that it wouldn’t be forgotten. Then later when I debuted in BTS, the fans found it. Even I didn’t know it would go public. Looking back at it I’m embarrassed because I seemed like such an amateur. (laughs)

Q: Since the start of your debut you were one of the only ones writing a lot of lyrics having to do with societal issues and finding oneself. Is there some special reason for that?

S: When I worked on songs I would always want them to have a message. I wanted it to have substance instead of just being over after listening to it once, and I thought it would be nice if people thought about different things when they listened to my lyrics. Since it’s difficult to experience society while being a singer, I usually try to watch the news or current events shows whenever I have time. Even when I write lyrics I adjust to the age of most of the people who listen to our music and try to solve society’s problems. I also want to tell the story of the people in their 20s experiencing the “Sampo” and “Opo” generations*, and so I’ve been trying to call up my ordinary (non-celebrity) friends and ask them a lot of questions.

(**Sampo/Opo generation: in short, the current younger generation in South Korea that has given up things like marriage, childbirth and relationships because of societal pressure and difficult economic circumstances)

Q: I’ve heard you’re in charge of “lack of energy ” in BTS. Why that of all things?

S: When I’m on stage or working on music, that’s when I come to life. Because this work is the only thing I’m the best at doing. When I work, I pour all of my energy into it. When I meet fans, perform, and do music I’m the most excited and confident.

Q: Do you also lack the energy for romantic feelings?

S: I don’t feel that I need to be in a relationship. Right now I like working more. To be honest I don’t even know that many people in Seoul. I don’t really like meeting people either. For me personally, there are so many things I want to accomplish that I don’t think I’d want to start dating until I’ve done all of those things. That’s why for lyrics about relationships I usually get inspiration by talking to my friends who are dating. So far that’s been enough.

Q: If you listen to BTS’ lyrics, you can truly sympathize with the exact stories and youth of that age. Out of the all lyrics you have wrote, which is the most memorable to you?

S: In the song “Tomorrow”, there’s a lyric that says “because it’s always darkest before the dawn”. Personally I particularly like these type of lyrics. Lyrics that can give you dreams and hope instead of pessimism. I want to give strength and courage to people having a hard time with their lives right now. Tell them that the sun will rise and things will get better, so hold on and endure it.

J-hope

Q: Around November you finished going around and doing concerts and fan meetings in various places overseas. Do you have any memorable stories?

JH: I have a lot of stories about having trouble because of languages. Haha. I’m not good at English so when we ordered room service at the hotel, Korean came out of my mouth without me even knowing. I sweat a bit over it each time it happened. But I was surprised because somehow the employees understood and bring what I asked for. One time I had to ask for a strawberry ice cream but I accidentally said “ddalgi”(strawberry) ice cream without me knowing. But then a strawberry ice cream actually came. Every time we order something we never know what we asked for. So when the bell rings we get nervous. Puhahahaha. One time we ordered sausage and a steak came. (laughs)

Q: In the last album “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, pt.1” all the members joined in on writing the melodies and lyrics. At this rate are you going to start producing?

JH: I’m still far from producing. Rap Monster, Suga, the producer and I work together a lot and recently the producer asked if I had any thoughts about producing. But since I still can’t make and organize my own music that well I told him that I don’t have the confidence. After learning a bit more, if I get a chance I do want to try and do it in my own style.

Q: How and when do you usually get inspiration for songs?

JH: I try to make them based on the things I experience. But since my environment is the way it is, I haven’t experienced a lot of the world. That’s why I try to watch movies or read books but I don’t read much. My dad is a literature professor so when I tell him I don’t read he advises me to stop doing other things and focus on reading.

Q: In your mind, about how far do you think BTS has come?

JH: We still have a long way to go. If we want to receive more love from the public I think we have to have better hit songs. I’m very thankful for the fans’ love, but as far as the public I still feel that we’re still far [from where we want to be].

Q: Overseas BTS’ popularity is insane.

JH: When I look at it I think that overseas fans really like K-pop performances. Especially the synchronized choreography*.  I think they really like it because you get to  watch a big show while you listen to the songs.

(*칼군무 literally means “Knife group choreography”, a term for group dancing that is especially in sync)

Q: I heard that your nickname is Hope. Is ‘Hope’ a similar idea to the characters Joy and Sadness from the movie <Inside Out>?

JH: Since a long time ago I tried to have that nickname. My actual personality is bright, and my name is Hope in English, so I wanted to strengthen that image. Before debuting when I did street dancing my nickname was even ‘Smile Hoya’. Hahaha.

Jungkook

Q: You’re the youngest of the members and currently in your second year* of high school. Is your school life going well?

(*There are a total of 3 grades in Korean high school)

JK: I don’t have that many friends at school. I cover up my face and I’m not very good at talking so I can’t approach people first. I think I could make it fun if someone would just talk to me first. (laughs) I don’t really know how I’m supposed to act around people my own age. And I don’t know what they’ll think of me either.

Q: I heard that you got taller while promoting, how much have you grown?

JK: I didn’t get taller, my build got bigger and my face got older. Hahaha. I think my chin got bigger too. That’s why the fans say they miss when I was a baby. I must have changed too fast. Sigh...

Q: September 1st was your birthday, did your hyungs treat you well?

JK: This was my fourth birthday after coming to Seoul, and each time was new and enjoyable. And it’s surprising because I feel like we know each other even more as time goes on. The hyungs bought me duck meat. Because out of all meats, duck is my favorite. (laughs)

Q: In a few months you become an adult. What is the thing you want to do the most on January 1, 2016?

JK: I want to get my driver’s license. I’m not interested in pretty things but recently I’ve been getting interested in cars. When I’m exercising and I see cool cars in the street, I want to try driving too. In particular a really big car. I want to drive a car that I feel like I’ll be safe in even if there’s an accident.

Q: I heard that out of your members, you were the only one who went to America to learn dance.

JK: I think I was fifteen? When I was a trainee I went to America with our choreography teacher. I learned for about a month but a lot of things about me changed. Should I say it felt like my senses were alive? Anyway I had changed so drastically that everyone was really satisfied.

Q: I heard that you’re crazy about Super Mario. When did you start liking it?

J: Ever since I was little I would have fun playing the Super Mario games so as a hobby I pointlessly started collecting figures.  Later since fans started giving them as gifts [my collection] expanded.

Q: I went onto BTS’ official blog and on a board called ‘Jin’ I found posts about things you cooked.

J: Haha. In actuality, BTS’ blog is my blog. These days I don’t have time so I can’t post but I made the board to get a bit closer to the fans. Because I love eating so much it is convenient for me to make food and film myself eat. There are a lot of ‘Mukbang’* shows right now and I want to try it for sure. I’m serious. I can do well.

(*먹방(Mukbang): online live streaming shows where people film themselves eating)

Q: Earlier I saw you had a flip phone and it’s even pink. Is there some special reason for it?

J: I simply use it because it looks pretty. But these days it does get uncomfortable. The screen is small so I have to put my face up close to it, and I think my eyesight is getting worse.

Q: What is the biggest concern these days about being the oldest in BTS?

J: Before they would say ‘hyung, hyung’ and obey me well but recently I can see in their eyes that they’re thinking about how they can bully me. Haha. Especially Jungkookie. Before his eyes were obedient but now it’s too obvious in his gaze he’s considering ways to torment me.

Q: I heard that the first time you actually see a girl you accidentally make eye contact with them. Is this true?

J: Because I went to an all-boys middle school and high school I didn’t have a lot of chances to talk to girls. Even after debuting I would only see women I see every day, so when I see girls for the first time I accidentally stare and then avoid them. That’s why I’m really sorry towards the fans. One time I got a letter that said ‘Oppa I made eye contact with you on stage, why did you look away? Is it because you don’t like me?’ and I was a bit shocked. No, no! That’s not it at all!

Q: This year you received a lot of love promoting for ‘I Need U’ and ‘DOPE’, and of course worked hard overseas. It seems that 2015 has been a year of deep meaning for BTS.

J: Yes it has. Really, just like the meaning of ‘HwaYangYeonHwa’, this year we have spent some of the happiest and most beautiful moments together. I don’t know what kind of activities we’ll end up doing in the future but we’re going to show that we can work even harder.

Q: If you could go on vacation with the members, where would you want to go?

J: A water park. I’m scared of water so I have never gone to one. I want to go to the beach or a water park with the members once.

Q: Out of the members you’re the only one with heavy eyeliner.

JM: I have a little fat around my eyes, and since I have to look intense for the stage I need to put on a little more.

Q: You were the last one to enter BTS. How did you get in?

JM: I danced since middle school. Doing battles and performing on small stages was so fun that I became curious about how much happier I would be on a big stage. Just in time, there was an audition in Busan so I ended up applying, getting through the trainee days and becoming a member of BTS.

Q: Which member, if you compare their present selves to when they first entered to BTS, has undergone the biggest transformation/improvement?

JM: All the members have become really cool but… I think I’ve made the biggest transformation. I mean I was the last person to come to Seoul. At the time it was the most obvious I wasn’t from the city. People around me also say I became the most like a person. Haha.

Q: It’s already been 3 years since BTS’ debut. If you could say one thing to the members for working so hard all this time?

V: You’ve worked hard, you jerks*! Hahahaha.

(*이놈들아 literally means ‘you guys’ but comes off in a slightly offensive/playful way)

S: I don’t think our hard work is over. Let’s keep working for 10, 15 years into the future.

JH: Out of all the members my age is more in the middle, so hyungs, thanks for asking for my opinions, and younger ones thanks for obeying me. I have so many things to learn from you guys, let’s keep doing well in the future.

RM: You guys already know. Let’s keep at it a bit longer.

JM: It seems like until now we’ve been running forward hectically. I hope now we can find our composure and all smile more.

JK: Thank you everyone for holding onto me as the youngest member!

J: I’m really proud of you guys.

Q: BTS’ final dream?

S: To rap really well, to have amazing melodies; more than that I want to become a BTS whose albums you can listen to the whole way through and whose tracks you can play over and over without stopping.

RM: Sometimes fans say that our lyrics have moved them or had an influence on their lives, when we see that we hope that through our music many people can achieve their dreams. We want to pull out as many people that we can.

JM: Our dream is to stand on a big stage. We want to go to a dome, and we want to go to an arena too.
