"Stiles."

At the sound of Derek's voice, anger races over Stiles's skin, followed by a sharp kick of sorrow to his rib cage. Instead of responding, Stiles looks past him to where Jackson and Scott—where the hell did he come from—stand off to the side.

"A little warning would have been nice," he says to Scott, though Scott knows better than to mention Derek's name around him.

Scott really is the best bro. If it weren't for Scott, Stiles would have holed himself in his room for the rest of time. Scott knows how much it hurt when Derek left, but he still kept in contact with him. Stiles doesn't blame him, though; they're both werewolves, and Scott keeps Derek up to date on the territory.

"I'm sorry," Scott says quickly. "There's a territory dispute, and the alpha wouldn't leave unless he got to talk to D—"

"I don't care. It doesn't even matter." Without a second glance, Stiles walks away. After ten years of zero contact, being so close to Derek is a whole new level of torture. All the long-suppressed memories and feelings quickly resurface, and Stiles needs distance to stamp that shit down.

As he climbs back into the ambulance, he mentally chastises himself for not recognizing the familiar black Camaro parked a few spots down from them. Of course, Derek would still have it. He was so proud of himself when he bought it, and it quickly became their favorite makeout spot. Before school, during lunch, after school—it didn't matter when. If they were both free, chances are they were in Derek's car, steaming up the windows. Now Stiles scowls every time he sees anything that looks remotely similar to a Camaro.

Stiles's gaze snaps to the driver's door as it creaks open a second later.

Jackson hauls himself inside. Neither says anything for the longest time as Jackson pulls away from the diner. They stop by a gas station, where Jackson grabs a sandwich and some snacks.

"You wanna talk about it?" Jackson finally asks once they're back on the road.

Stiles grunts in response as he looks out the window. No, he doesn't want to talk about it. Instead, he turns up the radio and closes his eyes. He takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. This is going to be a long day if he spends it wondering what the hell Derek's doing back in Beacon Hills.
