I love this quick bit of arthur characterization we get in one of joncon’s chapters— probably the most humanizing thought anyone’s had about arthur, and I like the casual reminder that he and jon knew each other & the subtle suggestion at arthur’s personality & what jon thought of him. basically: if joncon makes him sound uptight then arthur must’ve been an out of this world hardass

Say what you will about the politics of A Song of Ice and Fire, 'a feudal army marching through the countryside doesn't become any less horrific, abuse-filled and starvation-causing for the local peasantry just because they're the Good Guys' is really a point that like 90% of epic fantasy that's trying have any sort of serious/coherent morality could stand to learn.

i just think asoiaf is one of the few fantasy series i’ve read that really Gets It re: misogyny not being individual but part of wider systems of oppression (along with class, ability, status, etc.) that individuals can simultaneously be victims of and complicit in. so it’s frustrating to see so much of the Discourse be about girlboss v. girlboss and gendered oppression somehow ending when the feudal monarch is a woman
