I saw "45-47 for women" and was like oh my GOD why are scents so fucking gendered. Why have we decided that girls smell like flowers and boys smell like musk or whatever. They're literally SMELLS who the fuck is sorting them into genders

what's fascinating is that - for the record, i am not super up to date on the history of perfume nor is vintage perfume really my wheelhouse - perfume has been getting more and more gendered? as in, a lot of perfumes (and notes) that have been traditionally marketed towards women now read to most people as being men's colognes?

i have no idea when or why this started happening. anyone know why? bc i'm thinking of perfumes like cabochard and bandit and like, back when those were created, they were unanimously women's fragrances. but nowadays, everyone complains about how those fragrances read as too masculine. why? (it also highlights how arbitrary it all is, because the scents haven't changed, just the culture they exist in)
