and what if all these random conventions are happening now for them to test the waters and see if the fandom is still active to prove to a platform it will be watched??? then what, like has anyone thought of this being a possible way for this to be the beginning of a renewal?? because the show hasn't been aired in so long they can't take the stats from back then, they'd have to show evidence of an active fandom for a viewership and know if it would be worth it financially speaking

another funny moment was when the c2e2 moderator asked "do you feel like you improved as a chef?"

mads: "no. i'm good at chopping things, i'm really good at chopping things, and juggling stuff and catching it, but the result - the end result is not worth mentioning. so that's why we have a real chef on the set. am i disappointing everyone now? (laughs) and i'm NOT a real cannibal."

*crowd sighs*

mads: "that was WORSE for you" (laughs)

okay, so. the hannibal panel at c2e2.

this might be a hot take, but it was a rehash of basically every other interview they've ever done. regardless, i highly enjoyed attending the panel and getting to see a live interview between them with lovely fannibal friends. they have a great dynamic and it was heartwarming to watch in-person.

it's been 11 years since the show aired, so they probably stuck to the same/safe questions/answers bc hugh and mads didn't remember much of it. which is fair! but even they looked exhausted from the same repetitive questions and were itching to hear anything new. mads did answer one of the q's which was like, "what was your favorite memory on set?" with "there's tons of them. the problem with favorite stories is that you can't remember them. but when you're in the midst of it, it's funny and crazy. but when you get the question, you can't remember." which is true.

and also tbf (i think) hugh said that he flew in, went to where mads was staying and they got drunk together. if i remember correctly, they joked about how mads was late for his first fan op (bc the had such a good time drinking the night prior), but hugh made it a point to say that he still showed up to his. 😂 mads also said he missed hugh and it was sweet. you could tell he was being genuine.

thus, you have 2 hungover older actors doing a panel about a show they did 11 years ago at an event that was hastily thrown together at the last minute. it's no surprise they played it safe. the fan q's were pretty lame tbh. some were what i consider to be inappropriate. but hugh/mads seemed to light up at the silly questions the most. (which ofc, they're there to have fun). the fans would cheer/clap/shout "i love you!" after everything they said, which you could tell was grating on them after a while. like there were definitely appropriate times for commotion, but it happened after EVERY SINGLE QUESTION/COMMENT. (it's impossible to focus in a setting like that) also the "hugh dancy loves fake blood" bit got old real quick and you could tell he was over it lol.

on top of that, bc it's a reunion, they probably went for the nostalgia angle vs trying to do something contemporary. it's the best way to ensure the guests/fans have an easy, fun time. the moderator had the right energy and knew how to ask questions/transition the convo properly. just the questions themselves were not interesting or new. they also cut the panel like 10 mins early.

the only real "new" bits we got was hugh dancy's answer to the q "why did will graham wear glasses sometimes?" his original answer from back in the day was "because i thought it/will would look cool with blood on his glasses" but his updated response was sth like "because it helps shield him from the world"

The more I think about it, the more pissed off I get about the C2E2 panel.

Yes it had some very cute Hugh and Mads moments. But.

It felt like every Supernatural panel where they sidestepped and watered down any talk of Destiel. Except this time, they were closing off any talk about a CANONICALLY QUEER RELATIONSHIP!!!

The late announcement that Hugh was joining Mads at the con now feels like just a money grab by whoever set the panel up. It felt like just an easy way to take advantage of the Hannibal fandoms interest without actually having to put in any effort into acknowledging WHY we are so interested in Hannibal.

I mean, the hotdog question?? Really?? We all know that Hannibal would rather starve than willingly buying some unidentifiable ground meat off the street.

It even felt like Mads was having to keep his responses under wraps. I mean, we all how much he supports the romantic aspect of Hannibal and Will's relationship, so it just feels very icky.

I didn't really have any set-in-stone expectations, but I thought that acknowledging the main themes of the piece of media that the con was set up for would be the very least they could do.

Phew im gonna go drink like five cups of coffee to go chill myself out

i'm probably going to make several posts about c2e2 bc there was SO much going on. but overall, it was an incredible experience meeting all the fannibals! i was overwhelmed (in a good way) by the kindness and generosity of the fannibal fandom. i've never been part of a fandom and esp not one that is so amazing.

but to recap: i got mr. dancy to sign my tempo dvd LOL. the idea was all thanks to the brilliant @bodysnatcherrrr (tysm❤️)! by the time my autos rolled around, hugh looked too exhausted to really look at the patrons bc it was RIGHT after the chaotic panel. but we did catch eye contact a couple of times.

he was SO NICE and friendly from the start. when i gave him the tempo insert to sign, he literally shouted, "WHOA! A BLAST FROM THE PAST!" it was the most i've ever seen him emote. then i joked that "it was a classic and i liked the twists and turns" and he laughed his sarcastic hugh laugh and said sth like, "it sure does have those." lmfao. afterwards, he sweetly asked, "where would you like me to sign it?" and i said sth like, "wherever your sharpie compels you" and he smirked and signed it right above his portrait.

you can see the tail end of the "y" in his name run off the page as he marked the table so i decided to land one more joke, "leaving your mark on c2e2 as an extra gift" and he laughed and said sth like, "that's exactly right." we made some other jokes in between but it all happened so fast there's much i can't recall. i was also v careful to keep things lighthearted/comedic bc he looked pressed after the panel. but as soon as he saw the tempo dvd he came to life and looked so refreshed after that - so sometimes "doing it for the lulz" can be a good thing lol. he was much more lively for the duo photo ops with mads that were after the autos as well.

hilariously, hugh's co-star was also doing autos/photos at c2e2. perhaps i should have gotten hers to complete the circle.

got hugh to sign this poster I had and right away he goes, “wow that’s a very nice outfit”, I smile nervous af and said everyone had been very excited to see them here and whatnot, how it was trending on tumblr and he goes “DO people still talk about it on tumblr?” smiling and I’m like “are you kidding? we’re basically the main promoters of the show rn” and he starts chuckling and asks my name, tells me it was nice to meet me…I may never recover after I leave Chicago

currently thinking about how will's dogs represent his capacity for goodness while hannibal represents his capacity for savagery. will spent all of s3a apart from them while looking for hannibal and realizes he misses them too much. then he spends all of s3b with them and realizes he misses hannibal too much. he needs both of them to be whole, meaning he needs to recognize both sides of himself to be whole.
