Camille Chew, Portraits of Ladies wearing jewelry, 2015 It's lovely things like this that make me realize how infrequently women of color appear in the world of illustration and how important it is when they do.

I went to an incredible queer Latino dance party by Papi Juice and Maracuyeah a few days ago, and it was really meaningful to me. I realized I have never really seen openly queer women who look like me, who look like members of my family. Not in the media, the art world, not even online — my visual experience of queer culture has been saturated with whiteness and maleness. Beautiful skinny white girls and boys.
Seeing so many Latinas in love made me feel amazing, like anything is possible. Representation is a big deal. Visibility is a big deal.
