During training, young great ape “actors” are physically and psychologically abused. A primatologist who went undercover at a California ape-training facility saw trainers beating young chimpanzees with clubs, their fists, and even broom handles in order to force the animals to perform on cue. The “grin” you see on chimpanzees on TV or in movies is actually a grimace of fear, not an expression of happiness or contentment.
