Spotting a priest at a party really shouldn’t have Samson smiling so wickedly and sauntering over with a second glass of wine. With no interest in religion, only a healthy skepticism, his only intentions are to attempt to piss off the man.

“We’re in very different fields of work, Father, but I just realized we’ve got a fair bit in common,” he offers the second glass to the man. He’ll probably need it.

“I also ask people to kneel and — How’s it go again? ‘Forgive me father, I’ve sinned’ right? I don’t hear that but I do get a lot of  ‘Sorry, Daddy, I’ve been bad’. I think mine feels more sincere.”

If eleven years in New York City have taught Peter anything, it’s that being a priest in public attracts all types of people. He’s been made to listen to confession on the A train, yelled at for being part of the greater Catholic institution, and forced to play referee for religious debates on the street in front of his favorite corner store. 

It’s why he simply takes the glass of wine from the stranger but makes no move to drink it. He blinks at the other’s words, giving himself a moment to process them. “Hm, well you’ve raised an interesting point. In both cases, it can be argued that sincerity is being put on to receive what one wants. In one case, forgiveness from God and in the other, ... sex, I suppose. What makes one more sincere than the other if we look at it that way?” Never let it be said that Peter Eason is one to shy away from religious discussion, he just doesn’t want to be between it when he’s trying to get his breakfast at 7am. 

Religious discussion is healthy, is it not? Plus, this stranger seems interesting, if a little ... weird.

“If you’re looking for a place to sit, you’re more than welcome to sit here!” They said, gesturing to the empty seats at their table. “I don’t think the others would mind.” 

"oh, thank you!” peter replied. he hadn’t really been looking for somewhere to sit but it seemed rude to refuse so he took one of the empty seats. “i’ll trust your word.” though he was more than accustomed to speaking with strangers, it didn’t mean he was that great at it but it’d be stranger to sit in total silence, wouldn’t it? “nice to meet you, i’m peter.”

“they really outdid themselves with the decorations,” peter says to himself, heavily depending on the fact that it’s too loud for anyone to hear him speaking to himself. that, of course, only works if someone doesn’t happen to be standing close to him. which someone is. he turns, more than a little surprised, “sorry, ah, the decorations are very nice, aren’t they?”

peter stays back to make room for the group trying to make their way past him. not having looked behind him, he nearly collides with a young woman but stops himself short just in time. “sorry, they were trying to get past. are you alright?”

not knowing many people means not expecting to see many familiar faces at the gala. also, they’re all meant to be wearing masks, not that an eye mask is really enough to conceal one’s identity but peter digresses. back to point one, out of all the people he could have guessed he’d run into at the gala, he would never have guessed isaac. and yet. “isaac? is that you?”

for what he’s sure won’t be the first time this night, peter finds himself in the hall outside of the gala. he just needs a moment away from ... everything. his respite is interrupted by a noise to his left and when he turns, he sees an interestingly dressed character. “hello ... am i in your way?”

returning lost children isn’t an unusual activity to peter. sunday mass is always packed and it’s easy for children to become separated from their parents in the crowd. so, when the little girl standing alone by one of the many tables admits she is lost, it’s easy for peter to fall back onto the procedure he undertakes nearly every sunday. he has her, ava, follow beside him, clearing a path for them amongst the gala attendees until she’s able to point out her father. “hello, ava’s father, yes? i found her on the other side of the room, she told me she couldn’t find you. i hope it hasn’t been too long since you were separated.” after a moment, he adds, “i’m peter, by the way.”

"hello,” peter greets as he approaches the nearly empty table, “i realize we don’t know each other but would it be alright if i sat here?” he places a hand on the back of an unoccupied chair, somewhat nervous about his request. encroaching on another’s space isn’t in peter’s nature but all the other tables in sight are taken by groups of friends and he just wants a place to sit.

NEW YEARS EVE GALA, 1997.

peter very much agonized over whether or not to attend, not because he’s a priest and priests can’t do fun things but because he’s peter and probably has undiagnosed anxiety. once he decided on attending, he then agonized over what to wear. he ended up choosing what’s pictured above because he has no fashion sense. he’ll be oscillating between having conversations with others to trying to melt into the wall because he’s overwhelmed. catch him taking breaks outside and giving himself pep talks, internally though so if your character sees him he’s just standing in silence.

what’s your mutant’s ability?

vampire physiology. the ability to possess vampiric powers.  

what’s your mutant’s classification level?

beta. peter is indiscernible from humans nearly all of the time, the exception is when he’s feeding or when he’s extremely hungry. in either situations his fangs will retract, a feature which is difficult to conceal. 

how old were they when they first discovered their abilities? how did it happen?

peter discovered his abilities when he was twelve years old. he’d been having hunger pains for weeks by then but didn’t understand what his body wanted because actual food didn’t help. it wasn’t until his younger brother sustained a minor head injury that bled profusely all over the eason’s kitchen that he realized what he needed. even then, peter didn’t make the conscious decision to feed on his brother’s blood, he just couldn’t stop himself after he was left alone to clean the mess. 

so, what can your mutant do with their abilities?

peter’s vampiric abilities include enhanced senses, strength, speed, endurance, and regeneration. when he’s well fed, these abilities are at their peak. the longer he goes without eating, the weaker he becomes. peter can also track blood through smell and detect the presence of other substances if they’re strong enough or if he focuses enough. he’s able to shift into a bat as well, though he requires a steady amount of concentration to keep the form up. his final ability, one which he almost never uses, is hypnosis. he discovered he was able to do this in his early twenties but was unable to push past his own guilty conscience enough to figure out how to master it. 

…and what can’t they do (at least, not yet)?

peter doesn’t have many conventional vampire powers. he’s unable to turn others into vampires, he can’t fly, and he has no unique powers like telekinesis. 

what’s one thing they hope to learn or are currently trying to learn with their abilities?

peter doesn’t actively explore his abilities. the only abilities he uses often are his enhanced endurance and regeneration and that’s only when he gets little to no sleep and doesn’t feel tired thanks to the endurance and when he sustains small injuries that heal up quickly thanks to the regeneration. he doesn’t want to expand his powers or make them stronger.

what is the most powerful thing your mutant can do with their abilities? do you think they would actually do it?

if he ever bothered to master his hypnosis, peter could hypnotize people of importance to do what he wished. he could also easily kill others by draining their blood or simply killing them with his enhanced strength. however, he would never do either as they’re both actions wildly outside of peter’s character.

what are your mutant’s weaknesses?

peter needs a constant supply of blood, going more than a few days without drinking blood will begin to weaken him. he doesn’t burn in sunlight but he is sensitive to it and takes to carrying around an umbrella during the summer. silver, however, will burn him and he takes great precautions to never come in contact with it. and peter doesn’t know this for sure but i do, a wooden stake through the heart would automatically kill him. as would decapitation.

do they use their abilities in their day-to-day life? in what ways?

again the only abilities he uses on a somewhat daily basis are his enhanced regeneration and endurance. he doesn’t shift into a bat often, unless he’s trying to escape a situation quickly, and he sure as hell doesn’t hypnotize others. i guess you could say he does use his abilities weekly though because he needs to consume blood at least once every week.

as a mutant, do they have any goals? dreams?

most of peter’s goals and dreams don’t revolve around being a mutant. he is still of the belief that being a mutant was a sort of punishment for sins he would one day commit and to atone he must dedicate his life to god. so. no. i guess if he were to have any dream it’d be for mutants to be more widely accepted, but that’s not even for his sake so much as it is for the sake of other mutants.

how do they feel about the last 30+ years of mutant history? notably, the presidential address of 1983 and the essex house?

by the time the presidential address occurred, peter was thirty-one. he was already a priest, had not yet relocated to new york city, and didn’t know what to believe of his powers. the address brought clarity to the muddled situation, confirming his suspicions that he was indeed a mutant. that, however, did not mean his mutantness was not some kind of a curse when it pertained to himself. this was where his whole cognitive dissonance of believing he was made a mutant as a curse and believing mutants should accept who they are started. 

the essex house events happened more recently, specifically the escape, and though little is known peter suspects terrible things happened at essex. he hasn’t looked into it or anything, it’s just a feeling he gets. it’s made him even more determined to keep his own mutant status a secret.
