DANCING WITH A GHOSTS / digital collage, 2025, yah yah scholfield
two collages inspired by two moments in my novel on sundays, she picked flowers.
the first is meant to be vivian's memory of dancing with her late husband, the sensation of flying and of being flung, but it's a distorted memory. her husband's only shapes now, a red splotch in her mind against a quilted, messy background of green textures, wood cuts.
the second is phyllis, the youngest sister of the rice trio, on her wedding day with her late husband. she lost him to racist violence, and just like her sister's husband, he presents in her weary mind as an absence.
i really do love these! i meant to do a third one for ernestine, but my photoshop conked out on me. that's got to be some sort of metaphor, right? ernestine being in the story but outside of it. anyways! i scooped the pictures at the forefront from @black.archives on Instagram, one of my favorite sources for digital collages. hope you find these as intriguing as i do.

:/ I really really hate to throw my hat in the mutual aid ring rn but. God idek where to start. I’m on my 3rd job this year bc the first one destroyed my mental health, I finally left after having a severe schizophrenic breakdown on the clock where my partner had to come pick me up, and the 2nd one lied about giving me a position with higher pay that didn’t exist.
My current job is great, but I’m not on payroll yet and even if they give me a check it’ll only be for my first couple days of training. I won’t get a full check for another couple weeks.
My partner is extremely understanding but I didn’t have rent last month either and it just isn’t sustainable. We desperately need a car and can’t even begin saving yet. Ig my larger goal will be 500, 250 for my personal upcoming bills so I don’t have to put further strain on my partner and then hopefully another 250 just to help them out some. But anything helps at all. I’ve made all* of my writing on Substack free to read if you’d like to browse and tip me for anything you enjoyed or learned from.
Full disclosure: recently my blog has been almost exclusively rbs of my own friends and family urgently and unsuccessfully seeking mutual aid for dire situations. I will ofc try to honor your intentions w your money but I cannot receive substantial donations without sharing, so if you’d like to help me please consider splitting ur donation between the other recent posts on my blog as well. Thank you

I wrote something in response to a kinda popular white post calling the u.s. american people to action, specifically to war against the current administration, rejecting and sort of critiquing the idea of an america that’s worth preserving or dying for from the position of an indigenous person who’s, in many ways, already died for it. I call instead for the disillusion of u.s. american peoplehood, which is the only way to save my nation now.
It’s free to read <3
And now, they tell me evil has come. I understand why “When Must We Kill Them?” moves you– it is beautifully written, refreshingly direct, appropriately mournful and brave. It’s also a story in which I fundamentally cannot exist, one that begs, selfishly, my suspension of disbelief. American identity is very, very little more than something to comfort you against the living memories of manifest destiny and slave labor. The american in you is a cheap mimicry of purpose, a distraction from your guilt, so that you don’t crumble before the dream can be fully realized.
A free nation, its impending death, and the war we must wage to save it are white fantasies, dreams I die for whether we win or lose.
