The thing that gets me about the impending Harry Potter show is like. I'm able to, for entirely hypothetical purposes, put aside my disdain and disgust for the author's full-tilt bigotry and put myself in the shoes of someone who's still a Fan, like I would be if the author hadn't doubled, tripled, and quadrupled down on being a full-tilt bigot, and even then, imagining the alternate universe where JKR remained a staunch ally and well-meaning if clueless liberal philanthropic darling, I still can't quite wrap my head around why I'd want this show to be made

I find it incredibly creepy how Dumbledore views Riddle as being this sort of inherently seductive 'femme fatale' type. In book 6 he implies that Tom used his looks to endear himself to his teachers when he started school and hide his supposedly inherently evil and corrupt nature.
Like. Albus. DUDE. Tom was ELEVEN. Why would you assume that teachers would be swayed by or even paying attention to the attractiveness of an eleven year old?! WTAF?
Tumblr media
And then he portrays the Hepzibah Smith memory as another example of Tom using his seductive charms for evil. But although he does bring her flowers he doesn't do anything else to encourage her and in fact seems uncomfortable and determined to keep the conversation focused on work.
She is actually the one who is being creepy here given the power differential between them. I mean, yes, Tom is putting up with her because it suits his designs for the moment and could and would kill her in a second if provoked. But even though we know that she certainly doesn't. As far as she knows she's creeping on this young store clerk without wealth or connections whose job depends on keeping her happy.
And certainly while she enjoys his looks and his attention she also seems quite happy with the persona he puts on where he addresses her in a highly respectful manner, not as an equal. She's certainly not complaining about how he calls her Miss Hepzibah or asking him to drop the honorific. She likes that. She likes that he addresses her not much differently than how her House Elf does. She likes his whole "I am only a poor assistant, madam, who must do as he is told" thing. And as far as she knows he is just that, with no particular special power or talent other than his good looks which she evidently appreciates. This is not him leading on and taking advantage of an innocent sweet old lady.
Tumblr media
And yes he brings her flowers, presumably to keep her happy, but other than that he tries to keep the conversation professional and steer the discussion towards the purpose of his visit. He doesn't say anything overtly flirtatious or even try to prolong their discussion by asking to see some of her other things.
She brings that up on her own. Nor is there any indication that he is the one that decided to move their relationship in this direction. It seems more like she saw a young and good looking man, apparently far below her in terms of station and magical power, and made her move. He probably isn't the first.
Tumblr media
The way she casually touches him is just so creepy to me. And though he tolerates it, he did nothing to encourage or solicit it. Riddle is someone who is in general quite averse to touch. We only see him voluntarily touch one person in 7 books and that's when he touches Harry, just for a second in book 4, just to show that he can. I don't think he enjoys this kind of attention. He was probably glad to kill her for more than just the purpose of getting the cup and the locket.
And yet none of her creepiness is acknowledged. Instead, Dumbledore draws our attention to how Riddle cruelly seduced and murdered a nice old lady whose affections he sought and then betrayed:

can you imagine if you're just a rank and file death eater trying to help establish an evil wizard blood supremacist regime and every time you show up to a meeting first you all have to listen to the Dark Lord tell the story of how his muggle father abandoned his mother and gave him his name and then died by his hand (again!!! but everyone's too scared to interrupt him) and then you have to listen to him talk about harry bloody potter again and then you have to listen to bellatrix go on a rant about filthy half-bloods as lucius desperately tries to shush her while darting terrified glances at the Dark Lord and then the Dark Lord has to theatrically feed someone to his snake probably and then oh would you look at that? the meeting's over. another hour wasted with nothing accomplished. this could've been an owl.

concept: Tom Riddle is working on slowly gaining influence and gathering followers in Slytherin. He only shares his heritage with his most trusted confidants. Everything is going well for him until a time-traveling Harry Potter with absolutely no fucks to give strolls into Slytherin house wearing a huge snake Britney Spears style and immediately claims to be the Heir of Slytherin. Harry takes people on tours to the Chamber of Secrets, lets his friends ride on the Basilisk's back, taunts Tom in parseltongue, and Tom loses his mind.

ok i know the basilisk wasn't just roaming around in the pipes till tom went and roused it but like, imagine if it was?
Tom: Finally. A place where no one thinks I'm mad.
Tom: So... what's the purpose of that voice in the walls?
Other Slytherins: The what?

Ok, but listen. Harry goes back in time and decides to get rid of Tom Riddle AU, but the sorting hat goes like ??? when it reads Harry's mind. Idk it just irks me how the sorting hat is so understanding in most time travel fics, at best it puts Harry in a house he didn't want to be. But just imagine if it actually tells on Harry, full great hall drama with the hat going like "HE'S HERE TO MURDER SOMEONE"
And ofc Tom is instantly obsessed with the murder boy.

Forgive me for posting about this but some of the harry potter worldbuilding is soooo funny in hindsight. the political dimensions of every single wizard child in britain and ireland being expected to attend the same school in the mid 90s were not thought through in the slightest but what do you expect from an englishwoman I suppose

Summer after the traumatic end of the Triwizard Tournament, instead of Harry Potter getting visions of the latest evil plot from the Dark Lord, it is Voldemort who gets visions of The-Boy-Who-Lived’s childhood.
And they’re not pleasant.
---
When Newt accepted to become one of Harry Potter's secret guard as a favor to Albus Dumbledore, he hadn't anticipated being faced with a choice concerning the welfare and safety of a child: obey Albus Dumbledore's orders or stay at Voldemort's side to protect Harry.
Though difficult, the right choice was clear.
------
EIGHT EXCERPT:
“Are you all right?” demanded Voldemort.
“I’m all right,” murmured Harry, still a bit nauseous, though. He twisted his body around. Newt was close, barely an inch away from being pressed against Harry. His head was tilted back with the bone white wand digging into his chin. “Wait, don’t hurt him,” he said quickly. “Don’t, please.”
He was the only other person who noticed.
“If he would kindly remove his wand from my ribs, then I might reconsider blowing his head off.”
Newt smiled up at Voldemort. “And once you let Harry go, then I might reconsider melting your organs,” he said, almost cheerfully.
Merlin.
“Are you both murder happy?” asked Harry.
Newt snorted, while Voldemort’s lips twitched. “No, Harry, I’m not,” Newt said with a bit of amusement. His eyes narrowed. “But I would rather he let you go so I can take you to a safe place.”
“You are not taking him from me,” snarled Voldemort, clutching Harry tighter, his hand pressing Harry’s head flat against his chest. Harry didn’t protest. “He will not go back there.”
“And I would never let him go back to those horrid people!”
“He stays with me.”
“I don’t trust you with him,” said Newt, his tone unwavering. “I know who you are. I recognize your glamored appearance: you’re Tom Riddle, also known as Voldemort.”
Voldemort tensed, his chest shuddered a small breath. Harry could hear his heart rate thump faster in his ear.
“Do not call me by that name,” hissed Voldemort. He pushed his wand a little harder against Newt’s chin. Newt didn’t flinch, his head falling back slightly to the side in a tilt. He lifted an eyebrow; Voldemort made a low, growling sound. “Who will be a faster draw, then? You or I?”
“Don’t, please—”
“That is not something I’m willing to test out with Harry in your arms.”
“Then, back off.”
If only they could stop fighting like a bunch of kids, that’d be great.
As much as Harry believed Newt cared about him, he oddly trusted Voldemort just a bit more at the moment. While Newt had noticed his home life issues immediately and had advocated for him, Voldemort had been around for weeks, leaving Harry potions. The hand currently on his head was extremely comforting and warm. He’d watched over him and, well, Harry felt a little too safe in his arms to want to go anywhere else.
I must be losing it.
“Can you both not hurt each other?” asked Harry softly. “Please? Truce, maybe? Something?”
Tension rolled off Voldemort’s shoulders. He glared at Newt and didn’t move. “He is one of them—he’s a Dumbledore man through and through.”
“I’ve proven I’m not Dumbledore’s yes man,” retorted Newt. “I held him off so you could get Harry to safety—”
“—and you accosted me on the way,” hissed Voldemort. “And now you demand to remove him from said safety.”
“I couldn’t let you go off alone with Harry! Despite your visible care for Harry, I couldn’t in good conscience let him alone with you.”
“I’m not going to kill him,” snarled Voldemort. “I have had ample opportunity to hurt the boy for weeks! Some guards the lot of you are. He’s been outside of the wards many times, vulnerable to attack, and yet he still lives.”
“It’s true,” whispered Harry. “He gave me potions and they helped a lot. He could’ve poisoned me, but he didn’t. He could’ve hurt me loads of times… but he never did.”
Newt didn’t move; his eyes glanced at Harry briefly, before locking back onto Voldemort.
“Please, Newt.”

how fitting is it that lily evans, a muggleborn witch, was the one to bring down voldemort? how fitting is it that her love invoked ancient magic, when voldemort didn’t even believe that she had the right to perform magic? how fitting is it that she vanquished his powers through her sheer love for her half-blooded son?
and she was just about the most defiant muggleborn witch imaginable. this is a girl who watched her muggleborn friends being targeted and refused to stay silent, even to her best friend. this is a girl who rejected a pureblooded boy because he was an arrogant bully. this is a girl who defended her best friend against two purebloods, but wasn’t afraid to drop him when he exposed his true bigotry. this is a girl who had the audacity to fall in love with the same pureblooded boy who had never stopped loving her. this is a girl who loved “blood traitors” and werewolves and her muggle family as much as she loved anyone else.
this is a woman who joined the order of the phoenix to fight for others like her. this is a woman who defied voldemort three times alongside her husband. this is a woman who never gave up on her muggle sister. this is a woman who loved her “blood traitor” husband and her half-blooded son with everything she had. this is a woman who was reduced to nothing more than a “silly girl” (dh 344) and a “cockroach” (dh 739) by voldemort, even as he overlooked her most powerful form of magic.
and how heartbreaking is it that the wizarding world never truly understood her impact? harry may have been their “savior”, but it was lily who brought the end of the first war. it was her love that guided harry and helped him to finally defeat the most powerful dark wizard in the world.
lily evans-potter, the unsung savior of the wizarding world.

i like the idea that the horcrux in harry's scar was a jealous son of a bitch and got way too happy when his other counterparts (horcruxes) got destroyed. you can't change my mind. imagine harry feeling gleeful after destroying a horcrux.
Harry: I feel warm and fuzzy. Is that normal?
Ron and Hermione: No.
Scarcrux: [cheering like a madman in Harry's mind & soul]
