๐๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ก๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ก ๐๐๐ซ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ, a lecturer, political activist, and educator, dedicated her life to improving social conditions for black American women. Terrell's long life spanned the worst decades of segregation in the United States, during which she was a tireless worker against such unfair laws as the discriminatory Jim Crow legislation. She helped to found two of the most important black political action groups, the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She fought for women's suffrage and for integration in public education and lived just long enough to see her efforts bear fruit both in her home city of Washington, DC and the nation at large.โฃโ โฃโ ==โฃโ โฃโ Source: Mary Church Terrell." Crime novelist ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐
๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ก is the author of the much-acclaimed "Dublin Murder Squad" series. Her novels have won awards, including the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, and Barry awards; the Los Angeles Times Award for Best Mystery/Thriller; and the Irish Book Award for Crime Fiction. And her work has often been noted by reviewers as spanning the gap between literature and crime fiction. French is also a professional actress who trained at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and has been an active member of the Dublin artistic community with her involvement in theatre, film, and voice-over. The story centers on Dublin police detective Rob Ryan, who must reconcile the ambiguity of his past in order to investigate a gruesome crime committed at the scene of his very own childhood trauma. Rob's involvement in the mysterious disappearance of two playmates when he was twelve years old continues to haunt him, and as he delves deeper into the investigation, he must come to terms with the details of that horrific event. With the aid of his partner, Cassie Maddox, Rob finds that romance and professionalism are not mutually exclusive. They must surmount the obstacles their relationship places in the path of their duty to resolve Katy Develin's murder.โฃโ โฃโ ==โฃโ โฃโ Source: Tana French." ๐๐จ๐ฃ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก was an African American abolitionist and women's rights activist. She was a slave but escaped to her freedom. She then spent her life working for the rights of other slaves and women.โฃโ โฃโ In 1853, she came to realize that although women were some of the most important members of the abolitionist movement, they were not allowed to vote or hold public office. As a black woman, Truth realized that she was doubly discriminated against. Thus, she became an outspoken supporter of women's emancipation and lectured on women's rights and black freedom.โฃโ โฃโ ==โฃโ โฃโ Source: Sojourner Truth." ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐๐๐๐๐ง๐ง is the author of seven novels and three collections of stories. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he has been the recipient of many international honors, including the National Book Award. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts. His work has been published in over 40 languages. He is the co-founder of the non-profit global story exchange organization, Narrative 4, and he teaches at the MFA program at Hunter College. The story briefly portrays high-wire performer Philippe Petit, who achieved renown after walking between the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in August 1974. McCann then connects this act (which is based on a true story), on the events of 9/11. The plot, however "is not the story of Philippe Petit, whom McCann inhabits but never names," Tom Junod remarked in Esquire. It is also "not the story of another dancer suspended, by force of miracle, in thin air. Rather it is the story of the people on the ground and what it is like to be implicated in a freedom they can never attain," he added. To quote Adams, "McCann's language has been all about precision and detail, the surprise of finding new ways never to put a foot wrong. He has been led before, by the nerve and grace of his style as much as anything, to gravity and its defiance."โฃโ โฃโ =โฃโ Source: Colum McCann." Gale Literature: Contemporary Authors, Gale, 2018. The American reformer ๐๐๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง ๐๐๐ญ๐ญ (1859-1947) designed the strategy for the final victory of the woman's suffrage movement in 1920 and founded the League of Women Voters.โฃโ โฃโ In 1895 she became chairwoman of the Organization Committee of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and in 1900 she succeeded Susan B. Anthony as president of NAWSA. Her husband's ill health forced Catt to resign in 1904, but after his death the next year she returned to active service as president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance.โฃโ โฃโ Catt was notable for her intelligence, strength of character, and self-discipline. An effective speaker, a superb organizer, a diplomat and a politician, she converted NAWSA from a loose coalition of societies into a tightly knit political machine. She had pacifist inclinations and helped launch the Woman's Peace party, but she broke with it when American entry into World War I was imminent. By the same token, although she served on the Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense during that war, she did only enough work to establish her credentials as a patriotic American. In both cases, her first loyalty and best energies went to the suffrage movement.โฃโ โฃโ ==โฃโ โฃโ Source: Carrie Chapman Catt." Encyclopedia of World Biography Online, Gale, 1998. The American novelist and short-story writer (1905-1970) had an extraordinary ability to reproduce the look and sound of contemporary America. He worked as ship steward, railroad freight clerk, gas meter reader, amusement park guard, soda jerk, and press agent but, more importantly, as a journalist, first in Pottsville and then in New York City. He also wrote magazine pieces for Time and the New Yorker and worked briefly as a literary secretary and as a press agent. O'Hara's first and best novel, is the tragedy of Julian English, who initiates his own downfall by throwing a drink into the face of a social superior. A compelling study of status in Pennsylvania society, it illustrates what critic Lionel Trilling describes as O'Hara's dominant theme: "the imagination of society as some strange sentient organism which acts by laws of its own being which are not to be understood." Upon the success of the novel, O'Hara began work as a Hollywood film writer, his chief occupation until the mid-1940s. Source: "John O'Hara."
