𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐥, a lecturer, political activist, and educator, dedicated her life to improving social conditions for black American women. Terrell's long life spanned the worst decades of segregation in the United States, during which she was a tireless worker against such unfair laws as the discriminatory Jim Crow legislation.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ She helped to found two of the most important black political action groups, the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Crime novelist 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 is the author of the much-acclaimed "Dublin Murder Squad" series. Her novels have won awards, including the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, and Barry awards; the Los Angeles Times Award for Best Mystery/Thriller; and the Irish Book Award for Crime Fiction.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ And her work has often been noted by reviewers as spanning the gap between literature and crime fiction. 𝐒𝐨𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 was an African American abolitionist and women's rights activist. She was a slave but escaped to her freedom. She then spent her life working for the rights of other slaves and women.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ In 1853, she came to realize that although women were some of the most important members of the abolitionist movement, they were not allowed to vote or hold public office. As a black woman, Truth realized that she was doubly discriminated against. 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦 𝐌𝐜𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐧 is the author of seven novels and three collections of stories. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he has been the recipient of many international honors, including the National Book Award.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts. His work has been published in over 40 languages. The American reformer 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐭 (1859-1947) designed the strategy for the final victory of the woman's suffrage movement in 1920 and founded the League of Women Voters.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ In 1895 she became chairwoman of the Organization Committee of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and in 1900 she succeeded Susan B. Anthony as president of NAWSA. Her husband's ill health forced Catt to resign in 1904, but after his death the next year she returned to active service as president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Catt was notable for her intelligence, strength of character, and self-discipline. An effective speaker, a superb organizer, a diplomat and a politician, she converted NAWSA from a loose coalition of societies into a tightly knit political machine. She had pacifist inclinations and helped launch the Woman's Peace party, but she broke with it when American entry into World War I was imminent. By the same token, although she served on the Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense during that war, she did only enough work to establish her credentials as a patriotic American. The American novelist and short-story writer 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐎'𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐚 (1905-1970) had an extraordinary ability to reproduce the look and sound of contemporary America.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ He worked as ship steward, railroad freight clerk, gas meter reader, amusement park guard, soda jerk, and press agent but, more importantly, as a journalist, first in Pottsville and then in New York City. He also wrote magazine pieces for Time and the New Yorker and worked briefly as a literary secretary and as a press agent.⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ O'Hara's first and best novel, is the tragedy of Julian English, who initiates his own downfall by throwing a drink into the face of a social superior. A compelling study of status in Pennsylvania society, it illustrates what critic Lionel Trilling describes as O'Hara's dominant theme: "the imagination of society as some strange sentient organism which acts by laws of its own being which are not to be understood."
