Behind the Manip

Quite a straightfoward manip again. Hux’s base body is yet another Gerhard Freidl pic (isn’t he so Hux-like?) For this edit, I added a Celtic knot to represent the ‘string’ theme. (the symbol in question relates more to Christianity as it’s a cross, but there are some knots to represent eternal love!) 🧡

Behind the Manip

The source pic for Hux comes yet again from the lovely model Gerhard Freidl. For Rose... this is kind of crazy, but it’s Chungha from her totally badass domme anthem ‘Bicycle’. (I say crazy because Chungha is so slim and doesn’t look a thing like KMT). But seriously, go check out the MV (and put on the subtitles if you don’t speak Korean) because the lyrics and vid SCREAM dom!Rose. 

Since these manips were very straightforward, here’s a couple tips on how I clean up photos. (Btw, I use two programs: Photoshop CS6 and Clip Paint, on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with the surface pen)

1. When using the ‘Magic Wand’ tool, play around with ‘tolerance’ to select the desired areas:

^^ A lower tolerance will be able to differentiate colours, but the selection size is typically smaller. Do this if there’s low contrast between the subject and background. A higher tolerance is a quicker method, but notice how it selects most of Hux’s hair since there’s little contrast in that area. 

2. Use the ‘stroke’ tool (under ‘blending options’ in the layers panel) to catch pixels that you missed:

^^ Middle picture shows what exactly needs to still be erased. 

3. When using the eraser tool, select a soft and small-size brush to clean the edges:

^^This will not only provide accuracy/control, but also a more natural edge.

^^Notice how the wand without any eraser can result in a harsher, cut-out edge. Erasers are most time-consuming, but they give you better accuracy.

I use a combination of these methods (plus the lasso tool which I haven’t discussed). Depending on the background, I might also blur or use a ‘fingertip’ brush to better blend it into the environment.

Behind the Manip

After realising that there aren’t many manips of Chancellor!Hux, I decided to make my own. I searched a lot of fashion pics before deciding that the best option would be to stick to canon FO attire. Hux would be pissed, but yes, I took a BTS pic of Pryde (from the deleted Mustafar scene) as his base body. XD

All the gold ‘jewelry’ comes from the amazing Royal Dissension. Go check out their collection (and buy something if it tickles your fancy!)

Rose required very little edits because KMT is already an Empress; the pic is taken from The Hollywood Reporter shoot.

I couldn’t find the credit for the background (curse pinterest)... but it could be an edit from TFA. I decreased the saturation and vibrance, and added some ‘field blur’ to give it that shallow depth-of-field look. 

This is closer to the original. See how the red clashes with Hux’s hair and face!

The vibe I was going for this manip is: a reporter snapping of holopic of the Chancellor and Empress leaving the stage after a rally/speech. The B/W background reminds me of a newspaper clipping. (I also may or may not have been influenced by my ‘Damsel’ fic where Hux wears a gold barrette and Rose a bangle as part of Arkanisian betrothal tradition).

This zine's theme aims to highlight a myriad of Hux/Rose stories across the multiverse of canon & AU. Your works do not have to be time or space-traveling, though they can be!

Think of the whole zine as a multiverse, each work another timeline to explore! 🧡 🌹

Behind the Manip

When looking for a body claim for photographer!Hux, my mind naturally went to photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (cuz y’know, super gay, super twiggy). XD Apparently they made a movie about his life, starring Matt Smith! So here we have it, Hux pasted onto Matt Smith!

A tip to figure out sizing/alignment: I superimpose the layer at 50~60%, aligning most of the features so that the size will match the body. This isn’t the final position; it’s just for sizing. I then rotate/move it to whatever looks best.

For Rose... The original comes from 👑Queen Hwasa👑 from the kpop group Mamamoo (in their MV ‘Egotistic’) 

She’s considered ‘thicc’ on kpop standards, but still incredibly slim. I had to warp her upper arm because it didn’t look right for Rose.

A subtle change, but I think it’s the little details that add up to make a better illusion.

Behind the Manip 

As inspiration for the GRzine, I’ve prepared a bunch of manips that will drop over the course of the next three weeks. It’s my first time doing so many manips and practicing this new skill has been so much fun! Here are some ‘behind the scenes’ thoughts for ArtModel!Hux.

The base photo for comes from an Austrian model named Gerhard Freidl. (we’re gonna be seeing much more of him in my manips because he’s my perfect body claim for manip!Hux, lol!) To get the lighting right, I combined two photos of the raw: one high contrast, and one overexposed. 

Superimposed, I was able to manipulate the lighting by erasing out some of the highlights to reveal the deep shadows of the layer beneath. Voila, the final result!

I don’t have much to say about Rose since I only cleaned out the background and used some stock image of a painting studio wall as a sub.  The strip of impasto paint next to Rose is from, coincidently, another Gerhard:  Gerhard Richter!  

Now, I really shouldn't be using paint as mere aesthetic especially when a piece of abstract work holds special meaning like the Birkenau series; I could have used someone else (and honestly, I was gonna go for Kim Dorland, a Canadian artist, but his work isn't as widely accessible since he's less known).. But there's some weird satisfaction turning a nazi-coded character into an art model at the mercy of a smol spitfire WOC, next to anti-nazi art. ;) The painting was recently donated to the Museum der Moderne in Berlin.

Armie is an unhappy corporate lawyer for an oil company trying to make a change in his life. They catch up as he shows her around the city. And some old feelings return.
