I always say “yeah sure. I’ll walk you through it”.

Why don't people understand the meaning of self service? If I tell you the machines are self service,the right answer isn't 'can you do it for me'. Maybe try asking if I can walk you through it instead of being lazy when you are able to do it yourself. And don't get mad saying ' I know it's self service' when I've been telling you this system has been here for the past 8 years because you clearly don't know it's self service if you're asking me to do if.

Emergency Commissions

I’ve stopped roleplaying on this account, I know. But I’m coming back on to say I desperately need your help.

My mom’s abuse is getting worse by the day. Sometimes i go more than two days without eating or taking my pills because of her. My brother Bovis wants to be able to move me down to Florida so I can finally be safe. But to do that, we need some help.

I definitely wish romance was a lesser part of our society. Because of my disinterest in romance (and lack of attraction to everyone thus far) I feel as though I can’t really get anywhere in life when it comes to getting my own life as an adult. A lot of the social stuff available to adults either actually requires you to be part of a couple, or socially requires it. Either that, or the prices of activities seem to be based around having two incomes per household.

Hi everyone! A lot of nice people with good intentions have been thinking that I am ace, but I’m actually pan! I just really care about asexual, agender, and aromantic people! I used to be ace a while back and I was harassed a lot for it… people who knew about my sexuality would always bully me with a whole lot of “you’ll grow out of it”, “yeah but who do you prefer?”, and my personal favorite “have you found a girlfriend yet?"😒. I know what it feels like to be unaccepted as an ace, so I really want to spread acceptance! Sorry if I wasn’t clear earlier that was my bad😅

Yeah. It’s fair enough taking offence when the police in question are being offensive themselves (shooting innocents, being abusive to people of colour, etc.), but applying the “police are pigs” mentality to every situation is shortsighted and, frankly, harmful to those who do good work.

I think it’s worth remembering that the stories we hear in the news are often being reported on because they’re unusual, not because they’re the norm. In my (admittedly limited) experience with the police, they tend to be good people doing difficult and stressful jobs (and they’ve been nothing but excellent when I’ve needed their help). The good police officers need to be recognised and praised for what they do, especially given the generally negative perception of them as a group.

A few simple ways to make a librarian's life a little easier:

1. Just like if you were going to pay at a store, please have your library card ready when you come to check out. We’re not cashiers, but that doesn’t mean we have time for you to unload your purse or backpack and dig through everything for your card. And no, we can’t"just scan the books while I look for it.“ We need the card’s barcode before anything to open your account.

2. We need a real, current ID card for an adult to get a library card. As well as something with your current address (piece of mail, checkbook, etc.) if your ID doesn’t reflect that. And no, I cannot accept a black and white photocopy of your ID that expired in 2009 because you say that’s all you have (Seriously. Someone tried to pull that earlier this week.).

3. We have computers in the Children’s library for parents to use if their kids are with them. Please use the computers there (which I can see are empty from my desk.) if you want to ignore your semen demons while you play games or use Facebook. If your kids behave, by all means, use the computer wherever you damn well please. But if your kids are the type to run around, screech, and pull books off the shelves to play with, maybe consider going to the Children’s library with them where they have actual toys. 

4. Don’t accuse us of being racist/sexist/discriminatory against the homeless/etc. because of library policies that we do not make. Just don’t. I’m sorry that we don’t allow food or drinks other than bottled water (trying to get rid of pests because people can’t clean up after themselves…), but it’s actually a health issue. Not a "we don’t like you” issue. No, we don’t “hate the homeless” because you don’t get a second computer session to do “job applications.” Your computer was visible from our desk. I didn’t know Facebook was hiring. You used your entire hour and a half on it. Maybe it’s a time management issue of yours instead of hatred on ours? 

5. Wanna know what’d be awesome? If you actually knew the book you were looking for and didn’t get frustrated with us because you’re giving us vague information or what the cover looks like because you saw it in Narnes & Boble and it looked interesting. I don’t blame you for trying the library, really. Books can be expensive. Especially hardcover. But I can’t really search our catalog by “It was new by that author who writes crime books. It had a building on it.” I need a title OR an author. I don’t even need both! 

6. Ask how something works before assuming. And don’t yell at us for your mistakes. When you print something at our library, a notification pops up on your computer telling you the cost and to go to the reference desk. It’s not our fault you didn’t read and put money in the photo copier. (We have  a change plunger you can push to get your money back, just like most vending machines and other coin-accepting machines. It astounds me that people don’t try using that if the prints don’t come out…)

7. Don’t shout across the main lobby for computer help. Get off your ass and ask us at the desk. We will ignore you if you’re calling across like an idiot. It’s different when it’s an elderly or disabled person who has trouble walking or getting a wheelchair through the computer area. But if you’re just being rude and lazy, grow up.

8. On that note, please don’t snap your fingers for us to come over to you, either. We’re people. Not dogs. 

9. Please don’t try to get me to Interlibrary Loan porn for you. It doesn’t happen often (maybe only like twice since I started in April 2016.), but please just don’t. We won’t put it through. 

10. Don’t watch porn on the public computers in the library. (Note: we do have a web filter, but apparently if people email it to themselves and open it that way or browse sites like Tumblr or use Google image or video searches it doesn’t block it?) And don’t complain when we end your computer session because you’re breaking policy. And because you’re in public where children can see it. Do that at home.

11. Just be nice to us.
