tapeshapes 6
This week I started building the object. The first try was out of cardboard to see if the 3D model is correct, the second one was a test for the glueing process, for which I use Chloroform. Today I started working on the outer shell of the final object, which is going to be out of white acrylic.

tape shapes 5
I finished the support structure by adding thickness to the layers and camfer the joints. I started preparing files, ready to be lasercut and did research on working with acrylic.

tape shapes 4
I bought ball bearings that reduce friction and function as guidance for the tape. As a support structure I want to use cross sections of acrylic sheets on which the triangles can be placed. The recorder is placed within the object.

tape shapes 3  // theremin
During last week I finished working on the shape of the object, that is now consisting of 34 polygons. I started modelling the connectors and the structure that supports the tape.
I also came up with the idea of making the object into an interactive installation that works similar to a theremin. The pitch of a continous sound/noise/tone that is played back from the tape can be varied by the recipient through touching and slowing down the tape.

tape shapes 2
I started working on the 3D model for the object I want to built for the semester exhibition. Reducing the polygons from 10.734 to 156 I tried to maintain the shape. I explored the possibilties that tape offers to follow complex shapes:
3 DOF (2 rotation, 1 translation)
and applied them to the two variations I came up with last week.

cassette loops 2
While starting 3D modelling for the tape shape objects, I used the meantime to lasercut a couple of the cassette loops mentioned two weeks ago. To get all the measurments right I did some testing with different hole diameters first.

tape shapes
I developed my previous ideas and combined towards a next stage. The sketches above show abstract objects, that are consisting of a static frame with moving surfaces - audio/video tape.
Two variations:
#1   Skeleton structure, 3D printed
#2  Interlocked structure, 2D lasercut
I am planning to use different tape formats (VCR, CAC, etc...) for different sized objects.

cassette loops
In reference to my project for the Media Environment Design Studio dealing with tape latency I started experimenting with different cassette loop layouts.
The cassettes, that fit in every standard cassette recorder, are basically consisting of two lasercut acrylic sheets that are connected with metal pins to guide the tape.

tensile structures
Based on my thoughts about the elephants’ ear I developed the project towards a more genereal approach. I would like to experiment with tensile structures consisting of deformable 2D structures - e.g. living hinges - and linear tension elements (red) such as strings or wires.
Similar to the principle of bow and arrow I would like to focus on the possibilties of non static tensile structures.

Form improvement #1 with Fusion 360
Reducing the number of polygons and experimenting with the shape and different textures (reflections etc.).
Further idea(s): Slicing the shape in different orientations

elephants’ ear
My idea for a product to create is a directional room microphone which uses the shape of an elephants’ ear to block sound from unwanted directions.
For the shape I would like to work with thin lasercut structures similar to the “living hinges” project. For the patterns that perforate the material I thought of different kinds of tree bark.
