It’s been a busy morning and afternoon bringing these new 50 x 60cm oils to life. Inspired by the watercolours and the digital paintings (included) I’ve been enjoying a more expansive way of using to paint. Lots of large puddles of colour, lots of brush cleaning, hand cleaning a trying to create interesting marks and textures out of the paint. On BA Fine Art Printmaking we might begin by discussing how to draw but we very quickly move onto why we draw and a simple process like blind drawing can capture a rich variety of shapes that can be used for other purposes. It can allow the student to think about line quality as well as free them up from the idea of drawing as only a mimetic act. We still have places for this September! When choosing a Fine Art degree course one can reflect on what you want the course to give you, but also what you bring to the course. Are you a visual artist, are you led by material or process are you more of a conceptual artist whose work is driven by theory? Of course you cannot be conceptual without translating that idea into a material that has a visual quality. Not a visual artist that has no ideas! Each of the three fine art courses at Brighton have a different emphasis but on Fine Art Printmaking we start with teaching skills, image making skills, printmaking skills, digital skills but then we start to explore thinking skills and idea development skills, research skills, digital skills etc. This is some work from our first year students investing narrative and drawing for print. If you love drawing, collage, layering, text, image, process, colour, process, photography, photoshop, Procreate as well as learning a huge range of skills then think about applying to us. Some images are easy to come by others undergo significant transformation. This portrait of @ot_rt_ refelected the latter where I returned again and again to the head desperately trying to capture her likeness. In a funny kind of way it mirrored how Otti makes work adding subtracting moving layering omitting fragments of image and text that hint at more complex relationships of the self to geography both real and virtual. Hand sanitizer prints open the doorway to an image making process that touches on the idea of faded memory, loss, residue, nostalgia and allow someone like @abbeemartin_print a way to push her printmaking whilst she had to isolate during lockdown. Scarlett @scarlett.hazel.art has spent the last three years working with traditional print processes and along the way has produced sensitively drawn etchings, screen and relief prints often investigating birds and mortality. For her stunning grand parade show she took the brave move to use high resolution scans of bird wings to produce theses large digital prints. Screen printing, etching, lithography, photography, photo grams, digital printing, laser cut and using a variety of supports, @daisynell_print has tested her ideas and the processes to the limit unveiling ‘little worlds’ in the everyday. Phone cameras with microscope attachments, hand held scanners all have opened up other ways of making work. The act of making a print brings you into contact with the long history of Printmaking, you are making an etching the same way that Rembrandt made one, but equally as you reflect on the process you can give your work a new and challenging perspective. @artbyphoebe_iow has tested every print process to arrive at imagery and ideas that test print to it limit. On BA printmaking we question the nature of image making. Photography might be a starting point. The macro and the micro, hi res or low, analogue or digital. Drawing another, whether from observation, memory, sound or touch. Colour might be an important subject it it own right and how that colour is housed whether organic, gestural or geometric. Both @cloud32_ and @minahealyart are deeply informed by colour and process questioning the form that colour takes as well as it’s potential to hold more complex meanings. They have faced the most challenging three years of disrupted education, but have each developed their own language and process. I started this monotype back in February for a masterclass to the L5 Printmakers. I was never very happy with what I had done so after a long day of marking I spent the last hour of the reworking the series. Delighted to say that our final year printmakers are nearly there. After strikes, COVID, lockdown, remote teaching, lo fi printmaking, and a triumphant return back to the studios and workshops they will finally be showing their work in the flesh.
