congratulations to the incredible cast and crew, i can't think of a production more deserving of being preserved on film! i'm so happy that it's going to be accessible to millions of people who haven't been lucky enough to see it in person. and happy for myself that i'll get to rewatch in after it closes. if i mention it closing a lot it's because it makes me so sad to think this magic won't be on stage soon. it's truly such a life changing show, im so glad i've seen it (4 times lol). i'm trynna live in the moment, as much as i can with chronic fatigue + being autistic - and taking advantage of the discount my access card gets me hehe

talking abt gabe & touch in i am the one (reprise)

gabe repeatedly touches diana and the set, but generally not the other characters until this song. tveit's gabe (which i consider universal to the tour cast as well, as everyone in 2009-2012 was obviously trying to play the character just like him) is antagonistic and is dan's own mind talking to him, forcing him to confront his loss.

in every performance, dan tries to touch him at the end of the song (in most he succeeds, briefly). dan acknowledges him as real by attempting this; he is saying you exist, i know you, of course i couldn't forget you. and gabe runs. dan does not get the luxury diana had of knowing a son who isn't. he's just left alone with a grief he has finally touched.

JACK WOLFE. fuck me this guy is good in this show. he has the same core motivation as tveit's gabe, and he's obviously always reflecting how the other characters feel, but he's played differently enough that it feels like he wants something, rather than being a manifestation with a sole purpose. he does not exist entirely to antagonize the people around diana. this, to me, is what makes jack wolfe's gabe a ghost. tveit's gabe wants to be acknowledged. wolfe's gabe wants his father.

tveit's gabe is arguing with dan and forcing him to listen. tveit's gabe barely lets dan touch him, running as soon as he's been acknowledged. wolfe's gabe wants to be touched, the way his mother would, so he can stay. he wants to be loved. not just grieved. tveit's gabe is just loss, a missing piece. wolfe's gabe is a ghost. something left behind. wolfe's gabe would let dan touch him. wants him to.

"it's just me and you, for now," says natalie. and gabe is still there (in basically every version of the show performed prior/with different casts, he is not on stage for this). and he stares at his father and thinks, is it just the two of you? am i not part of this anymore? is it over?

and dan agrees with natalie. yeah. and gabe deflates a little bit. and unfolds himself. and touches natalie's hand. which, like. you read him as grief personified this is dan giving his son some sort of character, this is dan acknowledging who gabe could have been, this is dan letting himself say goodbye to the son diana imagined. if you read him as a ghost, this is him apologizing to natalie & finally leaving her alone with their father. which i feel normal about.
