Jack Wolfe deciding they wanted to play Gabe as a real person with real emotions is I think objectively the best choice. like I don’t think Gabe is real at all, but we see Gabe from Diana’s perspective for most of the musical and to Diana he is a real person with real emotions, so it makes sense to play him that way and when we don’t see him from Diana’s perspective (in songs like “I’ve Been” and “I Am The One (Reprise)”) the emotions that Gabe portrays (sadness and guilt in “I’ve Been” and anger and desperation in “I Am The One (Reprise)”) are those of Dan. They’re all the feelings that Dan has actively been repressing showing you that Gabe is grief personified. like i feel as though if Gabe were played as simply a device for Diana’s mental illness or as purely sort of sinister and vindictive, it takes away the fact that navigating mental illness and grief is extremely difficult and by Gabe being portrayed as a real person it makes it easier for the audience to see why the Goodmans make the choices they do and sympathize with them rather than it being clear when something is a “bad” choice because we have been viewing Gabe as sinister and simply Diana’s illness.

sure i understand from a casting viewpoint it makes sense for doctors madden and fine to be played by the same person but its just hilarious to me the idea that you finally switch your therapist and go to a new office only to be introduced to the same man wearing a different hat

one of the details in next to normal that genuinely makes me insane is the fact that diana isn’t just imagining a perfect son when she imagines gabe. yes, he’s her “superboy,” but in the very first part of the musical, when she’s “waiting up for him,” she imagines him coming home late like any other teenager. she complains and calls him a loser and a brat and a little shit. she’s not imagining a reality that never would have happened where gabe grew up to be the perfect child that never causes her any problems or stress. she imagines him as a real teenager, someone that could have been. diana doesn’t want the perfect son. she wants her son.

the fact that diana knows gabe’s entire schedule - a schedual that doesn’t even exist - and doesn’t know natalie’s is a detail that absolutely guts me

thinking about how dan sings "and all my fears just sit inside me screaming to be heard" and "and there's no one around" then gabe appearing and screaming with him because he is dan's fear and grief demanding to be heard. no matter how much he represses his grief, it has always been there with him — if only he could just acknowledge it
