I must not lie down. Lying down after school is the day-killer. Lying down is the little treat that brings total obliteration. I will face my exhaustion. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when I have made coffee, I will turn on the computer to do emails. Once lying down is gone there will be nothing. Only homework will remain.

“i don’t like writing about my day, but i want to keep a journal”:
quotes and copywork. when reading, if you find something you enjoy, just copy it into the notebook. you can copy a whole chapter if you wish, highlighting what caught your attention the most.
definitions. look up on a dictionary and copy it. you could write your own dictionary as well, making up definitions for words.
lists. a classic, write movies to watch, books to read, the playlist of the month or just the groceries you have to buy.
maps. when going somewhere, you could draw the route you took or just a map of the place itself. just look up the place on google maps and copy it. you can draw a little map of all the places you have lived or the schools you have attended as well.
photos
take “notes” as you watch movies / documentaries. write down phrases that caught your attention or doodle.
illustrations and clippings. if you see an image or piece of art that you liked, put it in your journal. if it’s from a book or from a magazine I would recommend scanning it, tho’. it will serve as a record of what kind of art you enjoy through the years.
newspaper clippings from the day.
tickets and pamphlets. from movies, museums, transportation.
postcards
records. you could record for a month what the temperature was when you woke up and when you went to sleep. if you do that for a year, it gives you a better notion of the passing of seasons. you could record rainfall and other seasonal changes as well. you could choose something (an animal, a plant, an item or object) and write down every time you see it.
rubbings of leaves, coins, landmarks.
count. there’s a scene in the movie Coraline (2009) where Coraline’s dad tells her to go count the windows. you could do the same type of counting game if you are bored and write down.
mindmaps/sketchnotes + timelines of books, movies, music albums.
collages
pressed leafs and flowers
your collections. if you collect anything you could write down an inventory or maybe try to draw the items.
recipes. write down recipes and give it a score every time you try it. you could do the same for drinks you try out.
stickers
comic strips. you can find a bunch of it online, glue your favorites in your notebook.

Hiiiii! what extracurricular activities do you do?
Renaissance Woman: Being Well-Rounded via Extracurricular Activities 👩💼🧠🎨🏅

hi, ty for the ask! i’ve done many different extracurricular activities through the years. in high school i did dance, choir, ceramics, and i took elective classes in coding/ statistics. in college i’ve joined a book club, various accounting/ business organizations, honors program, research, and i take extra courses in interesting subjects like psychology and sociology. i’ve also worked part-time most of the time since i turned 16.
if you’re wanting to decide what kinds of extracurriculars to do, i’d say to try to make it a variety. and pick things that you are actually interested in doing and will be able to truly commit to. don’t spread yourself thin and don’t make yourself do anything you reeeally don’t want to do.
i try to have a mix of the following:
physical activities
a sport or exercise class is a great form of extracurricular activity because it keeps you active. depending on the activity it also develops your teamwork and collaborative skills. you can also build strong bonds amongst your teammates/ workout buddies. find something you truly enjoy & can see yourself committing the time to!
academic & career advancers
this can include clubs based on a field of study/ career path, academic/ business organizations, educational electives, practicing a relevant skill, and so on. these are useful if you’ve got a career path or field in mind and want to learn more about it. if it involves a group setting you can find like-minded people with the same goals. these types of programs also provide tools, resources, & guidance for success.
hobby/ fun
some of the most fulfilling extracurriculars may be something you just enjoy as a hobby. for me this was things like choir, ceramics, and other arts. i enjoy artistic stuff as a creative outlet to help relieve stress, and although i don’t want to be a professional singer or sculptor, i still highly benefited from those activities. they spark creativity and force you to use different parts of your brain.
money-making
i definitely consider having a job to be an extracurricular activity since it can go on your resume/ college applications/ etc. any job will help you build useful skills. if you’re in a position where you don’t need to work, i wouldn’t recommend getting a job tho, especially if you’re a student bc your time could be spent on your studies. i recommend seeking other extracurricular activities through your school instead if you have time.

romanticizing academia writing prompts in honour of @lovelaceandco
cramming for your test the next day the night before: sheets and sheets of scrap paper, pacing around to get the ideas right, muttering to yourself and glancing between your notes and the presentation
writing the same notes over and over to get it in your brain
teachers that can quote poetry off the top of their heads & students who will sit around to listen
holed in your room for hours with impromptu music breaks and a hot drink going cold
academic rivals (because who doesn't love them) Anne-and-Gilbert-style:
"what did you get" and not hiding your grades when you did do better;
trading away the coveted position for a job you know they will do better at and you will love less & congratulating them for the awards they win and they you;
bringing them notes for a class they missed despite them being your competition
prioritizing your friendships.
school skirts in the dead of winter, cardigans buttoned loosely
having an idea in the middle of the night and getting up so it won't escape you again
going down research rabbit holes on topics much different from where you began
joining competitions that require studying for the sake of learning;
doing it all for the sake of learning
weeping over grades only to grit your teeth and promise to do better
sneaking in women in suits and powerful women here because academia is indispensable without them
burning energy in between-class exercise: sprinting down the hallways and climbing up the stairs to the old building; swim practice before and after school; chasing the wind out the doors as the final bell rings
getting swept away writing research papers on subjects you didn't know interested you; writing much more than you expected you would
finally understanding a subject that kept evading you; the click when everything finally fits into place
a braid falling out of place and smudged lipstick
the wide-eyed mania after emerging from a particularly grueling subject
jumping from club to fair to meeting
strings of code and students gathered around a singular laptop, muttering to themselves in hopes of finding their error
looking for a book in the library and finding a dozen that interest you
a dazed student stepping back from a chalkboard of illegible handwriting; triumphant with their answer
one student arriving early and working quietly in the commons; their classmates trickle in one by one, making small conversation, until the place is full and the sun is high in the sky
inside jokes in Latin from the ancient studies class you dropped two years ago
thick coats in the winter, jackets zipped tight while you run for cover in the snow with your precious work, ringed hands around warm mugs, cheeks flushed dark, snow on lashes
the golden rainbow of fall, the crimson trees on your way home, the traffic lights lit up through rainy windows, coffee and early mornings, chemistry trips to the ravine, catching the sunset after classes
spring flowers breaking through snow, baked goods and getting the hang of things, lazy spares in the common room, hoodies and boxy headphones, warm enough for the nice shoes, the soft patter of rain, the chirping birds
the last stretch before summer, unbuttoned collars, legs slung on furniture and frantic note-taking anywhere possible, eyes fluttering closed, chasing down the bus on the way home, rolled-up sleeves and tucked-back hair, "okay so".

decent day+major update, d-6
i passed physics with a C!!! I'm so glad and rleived, I didn't think I'd pass honestly... however, now I have my final math exam on the 19th and I have to compress 4 years of my worst subject into 6 days. however, I'm so happy and motivated right now because of my success and I only have work one day out of those 6, so I feel like I at least have a chance. I started off with my weakest topic today, functions, and studied that for 2h. Then 1h of analysis.

weird day, d-6
as always, math tutoring in the morning. but today i had to buy new shoes because i old sneakers were stinking and falling apart. i had some really odd experiences today, i dont wanna go into detail about it but they still got me thinking up to now and i just will not be able to concentrate. I really tried to study today but not a chance. so maybe ill revise my flashcards before bed tonight idk... i feel so horrible not studying because the next few days i have a lot of shifts and only 2 days off that i can fully dedicate to studying. maybe i'm actually panicking about my exam or maybe it's the nerves because of whate happened today idk.

i mentioned this in a recent post, but i uploaded my first study with me video today!
it would mean a lot for me to get some feedback on it from you guys! i recorded it through photobooth on my computer instead of on my iphone, just because i personally like the more grainy lofi videos, but please let me know what you think :)

really good day, d-7
sorry for not updating yesterday, there just wasnt much to update on. i just revised my flashcards at work. Today I had 1.5h of math tutoring and 1h of physics. I studied physics myself for around 1h as well and I updated and revised my flashcards. It is such a thick stack its insane atp. However, I'm feeling really good about both of these subjects right now. For physics I only have one topic left to study and that's quantum physics, which has no calculations so I feel safe there. I still have a week left, but I feel like I could take my exam tomorrow and pass :)

not good day, d-10
today was actually a fun day but not good for studying. i skipped math to catch up on sleep because for the past week i've been getting around only 4 to 5h of sleep and i got around 8h today and i felt a lot better. then i met up with a friend for some time which was nice because i havent seen her in so long. i actually had physics tutoring planned tonight but it was cancelled, so instead i studked physics myself. i only had the energy and motivation for 40 minutes. however right now i just want to not think about academic stress and guilt myself for 5 minutes and its fine.
