I was getting pretty fed up with links and generators with very general and overused weapons and superpowers and what have you for characters so:
Here is a page for premodern weapons, broken down into a ton of subcategories, with the weapon’s region of origin.
Here is a page of medieval weapons.
Here is a page of just about every conceived superpower.
Here is a page for legendary creatures and their regions of origin.
Here are some gemstones.
Here is a bunch of Greek legends, including monsters, gods, nymphs, heroes, and so on.
Here is a website with a ton of (legally attained, don’t worry) information about the black market.
Here is a website with information about forensic science and cases of death. Discretion advised.
Here is every religion in the world.
Here is every language in the world.
Here are methods of torture. Discretion advised.
Here are descriptions of the various methods used for the death penalty. Discretion advised.
Here are poisonous plants.
Here are plants in general.
Feel free to add more to this!

A handy list of poisons for writing reference, provided to you by me, Bella
Poisoning is one of the oldest murder tactics in the books. It was the old equalizer, and while it’s often associated with women, historically men are no less likely to poison you. This is not a guide on how to poison people, you banana bunches, it’s a guide on writing about poisons in fiction so you don’t end up on a watch list while researching them. I’ve taken that hit for you. You’re welcome. These are just a few of the more classic ones.
Hemlock: Hemlock (conium maculatum) is one of the more famous ones, used in ancient times most notably in Socrates’ forced suicide execution. So it goes. The plant has bunches of small, white flowers, and can grow up to ten feet tall. It’s a rather panicky way to die, although it wouldn’t show: hemlock is a paralytic, so the cause of death is most often asphyxiation due to respiratory paralysis, although the mind remains unaffected and aware.
Belladonna: Atropa belladonna is also called deadly nightshade. It has pretty, trumpet-shaped purple flowers and dark, shiny berries that actually look really delicious which is ironic since it’s the most toxic part of the plant. The entire plant is poisonous, mind you, but the berries are the most. One of the most potent poisons in its hemisphere, it was used as a beauty treatment, so the story says, and rubbed into the eyes to make the eyes dilate and the cheeks flush. Hench the name beautiful lady. The death is more lethargic than hemlock, although its symptoms are worse: dilated pupils, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, tachycardia, loss of balance, staggering, headache, rash, flushing, severely dry mouth and throat, slurred speech, urinary retention, constipation, confusion, hallucinations, delirium, and convulsions. It’s toxic to animals, but cattle and rabbits can eat it just fine, for some reason.
Arsenic: Arsenic comes from a metalloid and not a plant, unlike the others here, but it’s easily the most famous and is still used today. Instead of being distilled from a plant, chunks of arsenic are dug up or mined. It was once used as a treatment for STDs, and also for pest control and blacksmithing, which was how many poisoners got access to it. It was popular in the middle ages because it looked like a cholera death, due to acute symptoms including stomach cramps, diarrhea, confusion, convulsions, vomiting, and death. Slow poisoning looked more like a heart attack. The Italians famously claimed that a little arsenic improved the taste of wine.
Strychnine: Strychnine (strick-nine) is made from the seed of strychnos nux vomica and causes poisoning which results in muscular convulsions and eventually death through asphyxia. Convulsions appear after inhalation or injection—very quickly, within minutes—and take somewhat longer to manifest after ingestion, around approximately 15 minutes. With a very high dose, brain death can occur in 15 to 30 minutes. If a lower dose is ingested, other symptoms begin to develop, including seizures, cramping, stiffness, hypervigilance, and agitation. Seizures caused by strychnine poisoning can start as early as 15 minutes after exposure and last 12 – 24 hours. They are often triggered by sights, sounds, or touch and can cause other adverse symptoms, including overheating, kidney failure, metabolic and respiratory acidosis. During seizures, abnormal dilation, protrusion of the eyes, and involuntary eye movements may occur. It is also slightly hallucinogenic and is sometimes used to cut narcotics. It also notably has no antidote. In low doses, some use it as a performance enhancer.
Curare: Chondrodendron tomentosum is lesser known than its famous cousins, but kills in a very similar way to hemlock. It is slow and terrible, as the victim is aware and the heart may beat for many minutes after the rest of the body is paralyzed. If artificial respiration is given until the poison subsides, the victim will survive.
Wolfsbane: Aconitum has several names; Monkshood, aconite, Queen of Poisons, women’s bane, devil’s helmet) and is a pretty, purple plant with gourd-shaped flowers. The root is the most potent for distillation. Marked symptoms may appear almost immediately, usually not later than one hour, and with large doses death is near instantaneous. Death usually occurs within two to six hours in fatal poisoning. The initial signs are gastrointestinal including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This is followed by a sensation of burning, tingling, and numbness in the mouth and face, and of burning in the abdomen. In severe poisonings pronounced motor weakness occurs and sensations of tingling and numbness spread to the limbs. The plant should be handled with gloves, as the poison can seep into the skin.
Foxglove: Digitalis is large with trumpet-shaped flowers that can be many colors, but usually a pinkish shade. It may have from the term foxes-glew, which translated to fairy music. Intoxication causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as sometimes resulting in xanthopsia (jaundiced or yellow vision) and the appearance of blurred outlines (halos), drooling, abnormal heart rate, cardiac arrhythmias, weakness, collapse, dilated pupils, tremors, seizures, and even death. Slowed heartbeat also occurs. Because a frequent side effect of digitalis is reduction of appetite and the mortality rate is low, some individuals have used the drug as a weight-loss aid. It looks a bit like comfrey, which is an aid for inflammation. Make sure not to confuse the two.

A Note on Magical Word Structure
While scanning through a lot of magic posts on tumblr, I’ve seen a lot of tags misusing suffixes. In particular “-mancy” gets used as a general term for magic works, I guess because it just sounds mystical in nature. As someone deeply in love with facts and the English language, such misappropriations van be a little off putting. With one simple search, it would be immediately and obviously revealed that -mancy specifically refers to forms of divination; i.e. cartomancy, the use of cards in divination.
The obvious exception is of course, ‘necromancy’. The term actual literally means ‘conferring with the dead as a mean to divine answers’, but modern media has bastardized the word into encompassing a strange hodgepodge of dark arts involving corspes. This is wholey inaccurate, and probably is the single reason for that abuse of -mancy. However, the fact that we study eclectic wisdom not typically included in modern academia, is no excuse to abandon higher study practices and formal education. And so, I present a brief list of suffixes and how they can and are applied to magic.
-Mancy: A form of divination.
(CRYSTALLOMANCY: Divination by crystal gazing.)
-Graphy: Writing or feild of study.
(TASSEOGRAPHY: Study of tea leaves)
-Tion: Action of.
(INCANTATION: Act of chanting.)
-Ology: Study of.
(NUMEROLOGY: Study of numbers.)
-Ism: Practice or system of.
(MYSTICISM: Practising mystic arts.)
-Ry: Occupation of.
(PALMISTRY: Work of reading palms.)
-Ic: Having characteristics of.
-Scopy/Scope: Examination of.
(HOROSCOPE: Examination of a time.)
-Sis: Action, state, condition, or process of.
(TELEKINESIS: Process of long distance psychic interaction.)
-Magy: A form of magic.
The suffix -Magy would be a much more logical end to a custom word describing a practice of magic, and far better than the overused -mancy. For instance, magic with technology would become ‘technomagy’. Magic involving thoughtforns would become ‘tulpamagy’. It’s a slight change in spelling and pronunciation, but a huge shift in meaning.
I hope this will clear up some confusion on not only naming of magic practises, but also understanding the meaning of names of existing practices. As always, I’ll update this post as I find more useful ideas, and I’ll probably also make an extensive list of magic related studies and words for reference purposes.

Hanako was tired.
The last couple of weeks had done a very good job at turning the normally bubbly young woman into a shell of her former self. Exhaustion was now a constant in her life, looming over her shoulder like a predator stalking its prey as she went about her everyday life, blurring the edges of her vision and shortening her typically saint like patience.
Idly Hanako played with the jewel pendant that rested between her collar bones sparkling a rainbow of colours in the light of the foreign apartment hallway in which she found herself. The necklace itself had been one of three things left to her in the will of her Aunt Clarabelle; the other two being a small leather bound book that her aunt has treasured above all else and that the woman would routinely (supposedly) write in despite Hanako finding all the pages blank and what Hanako would only describe as a wand; a length of silver metal elegantly carved embedded with precious jewels and stones.
Hanako sighed. She missed her Aunt Clarabelle dearly. Her aunt who would proudly wear brightly coloured mismatched socks with her work clothes and who dyed her hair vibrant colours and whose kitchen always smelled of fresh baked bread and drying herbs. Her aunt who had made time for Hanako, no matter what was going on in her own personal life and who had told her stories of heroes and mystics before bed.
Her dear aunt that Hanako had had to organise a funeral for almost singlehandedly last week and who now lay beside her husband in the cemetery; finally reunited after almost twenty years apart.
The young woman shook her head and wiped at her eyed. Hanako didn’t have time to get misty eyed now, not when she had to explain to the stranger on the other side of the door why she had three large boxes for them from her eccentric late aunt.
It was the soft squeak of hinges that finally pulled Hanako from her thoughts. She looked up, eyeing the man that stood in the doorway with a tired smile on her lips.
“You wouldn’t happen to be Anapa Kem, would you?”

“What on Gaia’s green Earth?”
Its the sounds of a distressed dog that pull Hanako away from the potion bubbling on her stove, slippered feet padding oh so softly on wooden floors as she makes her way out onto the small balcony (which some would consider overgrown with plants) of her apartment.
“Hoshi, what are you doing? Leave that poor thing along”
The witch sighed but resisted the urge to slap her hand over her face. Her familiar, the sentient ball of orange fluff that he was, was sitting just out of reach of the neighbors dog, occasionally flicking his tail in the canine’s direction as if taunting the poor animal.
Frowning softly at her own familiar Hanako contemplated whether or not to use her magic to move him. It was a risky solution, considering anyone could look onto the balcony at that point. However, if she locked Hoshi inside then it would stop him tormenting the neighbors pet. Just as she had made her mind up, raising her hands to magic the cat back inside; Hoshi scampered, jumping down off the fence line and darting back in through the open door.
This must be her new neighbor, the owner of the dog.
“Oh, hello there! I’m so sorry about that, my cat seems to think he’s the king of the universe”

☽║☾ Even the young goddess couldn’t hide the small smile that graced her lips. Hanako was exactly like her father had described. So warm and full of light– no wonder Anubis had fallen for her.
He always drifted towards things that burned brightly; despite his designation as a death god, he loved life so much. It was almost unfair. Chet had no trouble sticking to the shadows, of biding her time in the dark and amassing her power. The world of humans was so bright and loud– full of color and sound and emotions and the young goddess almost yearned for the cold darkness that the underworld cocooned her in.
Taking a sip of the drink placed before her, Chet’s eyes widened at the flavor. It was mildly sweet and easy to drink– she downed half the glass before she returned her attention to the woman. “This is quite refreshing. Thank you for the lovely hospitality.”
Clearing her throat, she eyed the slice of cake but returned to her demure behavior, lashes fluttering briefly before she spoke in an even and calm tone. “Anubis has told me about you as well. It seems he was not exaggerating– I am not as good as he is at judging human souls solely by aura, but you are definitely one of a kind, Miss Hanako.”
Shifting to cross a leg elegantly, skirt draping modestly down her knees, Chet continued, “It is rare for Egyptian deities to fall for humans. Out of most pantheons, we are the ones who generally keep to ourselves. Of course father never did quite follow the rules. I’ll be frank– I was upset when he chose humanity over Duat. It felt as if he were choosing your kind over me. I do not know if he told you, but he was otherwise banished by Ra from returning to the realm of the gods when he first chose to come to earth. I had not seen him for centuries and the first thing he tells me is of a human woman he is absolutely smitten with. It… hurt me. He was so happy here, living amongst humans, as if me and mother meant nothing to him.”
A few tears slipped down her cheeks to her utter dismay at the confession. Quickly, she used the sleeves of her sweater to wipe the tears away. The action made her seem much younger than she truly was, a vulnerability slowly rising to the surface.
“I-I know now that he has felt as torn as I did. He wanted so much to return to me, to show me all he had found and loved on earth. Now that I am here, visiting humanity for the first time– I-I think I finally understand. He was hurting just as much as me…”
⚜ | ⚜
Hanako’s heart ached for the goddess sitting across from her. The very idea of being separated forcefully from her own family was one that she never even wanted to entertain. She knows it must have been hard, for both ‘Chet and Anubis, with their strong bond, to be torn apart like that though she could scarcely begin to even imagine the pain they both must have gone through.
Maternal instincts started to bubble at the first sight of the girl before her crying. While it was true what ‘Chet was centuries older than her, the goddess looked like she was barely out of her teens.
“Anubis hasn’t told me bunch about his banishment” She explained, taking a sip of her tea to try and wash away the lump that was forming in her throat. “But he’s certainly regaled me with stories about you and all your adventures growing up”
Hanako stopped, taking a moment to look around her apartment; eyes picking out small objects that belonged to the jackal god and tiny treasures he’d gifted her. She looked at the folders and binders, half finished photography projects and memories of their time together. It warmed her heart but also caused a weight to form on her shoulders. The brunette sighed and set her cup down, turning to look at the goddess across from her.
“ ‘Chet, please do not misunderstand. I love your father dearly, I would happily leave all this behind and follow him down to the underworld if I had to; Anubis has given me so much, he’s taught me what true love, proper true love not that fairy tale bullshit, is about. But, do not for a second think I would ever make him choose between the two of us. I am his lover, yes but you are his daughter”

Happy New Year to you too Hani!
I’m so proud of you! You’re going to do great this year I just know it! I cannot wait to see where Uni and life takes you because I know you will be great!
hannah’s super sappy bias list 2k17
☽║☾ OOC. u heard it here folks– i’m in love w/ all of you…. in all seriousness, it’s been a hard year for me, between school, work, and family commitments, i felt myself on the edge of a breakdown all year. truly, it’s only thanks to all of you lovely angels here that i’m still ready and rearing to meet 2017 head on. b4 i get too sappy and weepy, i just wanted to say that i appreciate everyone so much!! you’ve all been nothing but supporting and patient with me even though i’ve had a very hectic schedule lately. you’ve made me laugh, smile, and generally, have given me a place and community that i can truly be happy in. i’ve made invaluable friendships here that i know i will cherish forever.
now, i’m gonna give out the bad news before i get to the good stuff– i’m officially putting this blog on a semi-hiatus. when university start up again, i will be juggling quite a lot– between working on my capstone, preparing myself for a study abroad, general science-y classes, studying for the MCAT, longer work shifts, and getting ready to apply for medical school, i will need as much free time as i can get. this means i will most likely only be on to rp on the weekends– however, i will always log onto this blog every day to reply to messages, inbox stuff, etc., so it’s less of me being away and more that i’ll be even slower than usual w/ my replies. i’m sorry that i have to do this, but i have to make time for what’s important in my life right now, and above all else, i have to focus on my future plans. i do wanna reiterate that i’m not abandoning this blog by any means– merely that i will have to take a step back and focus even more on my studies!!
and now, to the fun stuff! underneath you’ll find a list of lovelies whom i love chatting w/ ooc and who make my dash bright and cheery!! *smooches*
Keep reading
