What could I possibly say here to convey the impact of intrepid reporter, teacher, and all-around incredible man Bill “Reck” Recktenwald? Maybe the bunch of us showing up in southern Illinois, planning carpools and flights, sharing memories and shoulders is actually better than words. Like Reck, just showing up and caring. If you had the privilege to know him like I did during my time at SIU and the Daily Egyptian, you know how words fail to do justice to his legacy and influence on more students’ lives than we’ll ever truly know. I may not have heard all his stories from his Pulitzer-winning days firsthand, but I will never forget the other quieter moments when his presence, advice, and humor brought a smile to my face. To my Saluki family, it was great to be home.
