I know I'm splitting hairs here but it bothers me how Tribbie is a child in the 3.5 story. Isn't she supposed to have gotten "younger" over time as she split into more fragments?
#' They already have her model ' I KNOW#I know they couldn't have done it any other way but still#It was jarring to see exactly the same Tribbie#when for example they put some effort into differentiating Aglaea's characterization#honkai star rail 3.5#hsr#I honestly dont know how to point this out without sounding like a gooner who wanted the adult mommy version#but I was ok even with just a difference voice direction and characterization you know?#a tiny sliver of acknowledgement this Tribbie was 1000 younger than the one we met up until now

Rewatching The Untamed and I don't understand why Jiang Cheng is so so mad at Wei Wuxian when the Wens destroy Lotus Pier. Wei Wuxian or not, helping LWJ or not, the Wens would have come knocking and I don't see the Jiangs bowing down to the Wens any time soon. The Wens attacked the Lan and Nie Clans already, the Jiangs were always on their list.
#not a Jiang Cheng hate post btw#It's just perplexing to me how he thinks that#and the other characters or the narrative never contradict him either#when it was clearly just a matter of time until the Wens found and excuse to attack#the Jiangs were too proud to completely bow down to the Wens anyway#the untamed#mdzs#mo dao zu shi

Maybe the story would have turned out different if certain disciples listened to Lan Qiren listing off all the Lan Clan's rules. Instead WWX and NHS were fooling around (and even Meng Yao was still there and could have heard something important but they were distracting him). The most important lecture and they all missed it. See how it turned out.

One thing that was a miss with me in-game but it's especially tiring to see in the fandom discussion surrounding the two endings of Expedition 33 is how heavily it focuses on Verso and Maellicia, their histories, their wishes etc.
Don't get me wrong, as main characters, it's natural they would have more relevance. However, any discussion surrounding this last choice centers on them and only them - at times, they might consider the Dessandre family into the equation, but that's it.
If you agree with the narrative that the Canvas world is fake, basically worthless, something that can be erased on a whim, that's the right approach. But why would you?
To begin with, if you think the Canvas world and its people's lives aren't worth anything, the game falls a bit flat. For most of it, we are fighting the Paintress to stop the Gommage, and then Renoir to restore the world. That's the important stake we are fighting for!
But more than that, if the only people worth mentioning are the ones from outside the Canvas, the choice isn't a true choice at all. In that light, Alicia is truly just holing herself up in a "Minecraft world" and needs to be dragged out by force if necessary. If Lumiere is fake and her true life is outside, the whole tension of the last confrontation falls apart. It's like trying to get your gamer family member to go out and socialize because they are becoming a shut-in.
But if Lumiere isn't fake. If the world is worth protecting, if the people inside are "real" and their relationships (even with Alicia) are real, then just handwaving the ending as "Alicia needs to move on", "Verso deserves agency" etc falls flat to me. There's a whole ass world they are fighting to protect/erase and those countless lives aren't even worth taking into account?
Just to be clear, if you are doing a study of Verso, or Maelle, or their relationship, then by all means, it makes sense to focus on them. But most discourse surrounding this game basically reduces the Canvas as fiction and not worth consideration compared to a single life of someone from the outside, and it's frustrating to see.
#clair obscur: expedition 33#coe33#coe33 spoilers#clair obscur expedition 33 spoilers#verso dessendre#alicia dessendre#maelle#I don't even mean that Maelle's ending is the right one and Verso's is the wrong one btw#not for the characters not for the story#I just think that we are losing sight of a very important bit of the puzzle.#if you decide that a whole world doesn't deserve to exist at the expense of Maelle's life and Verso's suffering#that's a valid position to have#if the only consequence you see for Maelle's ending is Verso being forced to live#I think something just as important is being forgotten

both painted verso AND the mask keeper being weak to fire damage is... Hilarious considering that both his parents made them separately. like hi yeah my son died in a terrible fire. im going to make it very easy for that to happen again when i recreate him in his minecraft server.

One thing I really like about Expedition 33 is the worldbuilding.
At the start, the game could very well be set in Paris, France. It could be an alternative timeline, but you don't have many reasons to believe it isn't "our France" in some way.
Then you start to think it must be an alternative reality/timeline or a post-apocalyptic France. They have important landmarks, such as the Eiffel tower, but it's all warped. They obviously have things like the Paintress and the Gommage. Everything points to the world being our own until an unspecified point in the past when something happened - but, each time they mentioned the world before the fracture, I always pictured our own early 20th century world.
However, the more you go on, the more this falls apart. The Gestrals and Esquie mention being around for hundreds of years, way before the fracture. Every now and then you find little hints that this world is definitely not our own.
When you find out they live in a Canvas, the player will guess the world Renoir, Alicia & co are from is the "real word" - just that it isn't, either. We don't have Painters. As close as it can be to our real world, it certainly isn't.
It makes you question time and time again which world is fictional and which is real, which I think is a very important question to ask yourself by the time you arrive to the last confrontation.
