Comforting Shoji after a particularly bad nightmare?
YESSS this is one of those things I keep thinking about doing but then forget to! One of the light novels indicates that he's an active sleeper, plus he's almost certainly got some flavor of PTSD, so night terrors are not out of the question.
Dreaded Dreams
Mezo Shoji x Reader
~~~
You were awoken by the feeling of being hit in the side. "Mezooo why," you whined absentmindedly, quite ready to fall right back into slumber.
Until Shoji answered.
"...no...take me...instead... don't...NO!"
At first, you just listened to his sleep chatter with a furrowed brow. Then the outburst made you sit stark upright, shaken as you looked over at your boyfriend. Mezo's face was contorted with panic. He struggled against the tangled blanket, head tossing, sweating, shivering, trapped in the throes of some horrible dream.
Urgently, you flicked on the bedside lamp before leaning over him, hands smoothing over his twitching face. "Mezo, baby, wake up, c'mon, come back to me, you're okay."
Like a man brought back from drowning, Shoji woke up with a harsh gasp. His eyes were wild in the low light, still panicked, still seeking out the monstrous meres who had tormented his sleep. Then his eyes settled on you, and instantly welled with tears. Before you could say anything, six arms were dragging you down into a crushing, desperate embrace.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, are you okay? I tried, I'm so sorry!"
"Mezo...Mezo I can barely breathe, you need to calm down, you're okay!" You'd only ever felt his softer hugs, all love and warmth. His terror was unfamiliar, the sudden lack of self control frightening.
Suddenly you were both sitting up. He released you in favor of looking you over, manifesting hands and eyes to look for something that had been in that nightmare. More concerning, he was still hyperventilating, hard, enough to make you fear he would lose consciousness and tumble right back into the terror.
Cupping his sharp jaw, you began rubbing circles over his scarred cheeks with your thumbs. This time, you softened your voice to speak. "Hey hey look at me, listen to me. I'm okay Mezo, it was just a bad dream, you're okay, I'm okay. Just breathe with me, you need to breathe. We do this all the time, yeah? In...and hold...and ouuuut...and in..."
The ritual was a practiced one, though, it was usually Shoji leading. In fact, you couldn't remember a time you'd had to do this for him. He'd never had such an acute reaction to a bad dream, at least, not by your side.
Of course, he'd had nightmares before, deny though he might. Suddenly flailing in the night, then waking with a start. He'd get himself a drink, then softly insist that nothing was wrong, that you should go back to sleep. He would lay awake or take a short walk, anything to hide from it, pushing it away, pushing you away.
Mezo never spoke of what he saw in those nightmares. He grew uncomfortable if you asked, snippy if you persisted. I don't remember, the only lie he ever told you.
Finally, his breathing slowed. Not entirely back to normal, and his face was still sweaty and flushed. Your brow furrowed with worry. "Mezo, what happened?"
"I...don't remember."
You sighed, and stood. Immediately, several hands were clutching your arm. "Don't go!"
"I'm just gonna grab a wet washcloth, I'll be right back, I promise. ...I'll keep talking to you so you know I'm there, would that work?"
He nodded, slowly. Fingers loosened before arms went lax, and you were able to shuffle off to the restroom. Be quick, keep talking, get back to him.
Shoji sat still in bed, staring at the wall, trying to keep his eyes open because every time he blinked, all he could see was your bloodied face twisted in pain. Your voice carried, stream of consciousness chatter backed by the sound of a cabinet opening and closing, running water.
"Ah, so, I think that tanuki is pregnant, the one that keeps visiting our garden. Or she's just gotten really really fat. Which makes sense too, I mean, I know you're not supposed to feed them, but she's so cute, and I want her to feel safe in our yard, yanno? We have a fence. And the babies are so cute. You're gonna have to help me name them if we get tanuki grandbabies..."
Then you were sitting in front of him again. He stared too hard at your face as you gently wiped the sweat from his brow, feeling guilty for the worry tugging at your features. He drew in a breath.
"Don't apologize."
He exhaled the unspoken 'sorry', frowning. "...I didn't mean to wake you like that."
"I know, it's not your fault."
"...that, uhm, feels nice."
"Good," you breathed, a small smile finally tugging at your lips, only to falter when you spoke again. "Mezo, I know you always remember them, and usually I just let it slide. But you've never had one this bad, like, a full on night terror."
"I have," he admitted. "Just, not with you there."
"Mezo-"
"I don't, don't want you to worry..." Shoji trailed off, looking down and away. Your hand under his chin pulled his gaze back up. Slowly, wordlessly, your gaze coaxed him to crack. "...you were in it, this time. They made me watch. They said I didn't learn before so they had to teach me by hurting you instead, your face was, it was shredded, and I didn't have my arms so I couldn't-, they m-made me watch."
"Shhh come here." Mezo was crying by the time you pulled him to your chest. He curled into you as your hands smoothed over his heaving shoulders. "That won't happen. That will never happen. I'm here baby, we're safe."
"I'm sorry...I'm sorry, please, don't let go."
"I won't. I'm here. I'm here, just let it out."
You moved to lay on your side, and Shoji followed. He found his place with his face buried in your upper belly, curled into you like a child seeking comfort and safety. Fingers sifted through his hair, slowly soothing until sobs ceased. At long last, his breathing calmed.
This time when Mezo's arms wrapped around your midsection, it was that familiar gentle embrace. "Do you need anything else?" You felt his head slowly shake. "You just wanna try to go back to sleep like this?"
"...I don't know if I can right now."
"That's okay. You don't have to. You can just stay right here, just like this, until you feel better."
No more words were needed after that. Shoji moved again, once, to scooch up and nuzzle against your chest. You held him there, close, as he distracted himself by matching his breathing to your heartbeat as you grew drowsy. And the next morning, when you woke, you found him still there, cradled close and sleeping peacefully.
Just reblogging this again so hopefully more people can see this. That “analysis” from that guy really pissed me off
Natsuo is NOT like Endeavor.
Tumblr media
Okay, so I’ve posted about this before, but I also just saw another interpretation pop up recently about the character of Natsuo Todoroki, and how he has similarities to Enji (Endeavor) beyond his appearance. And while these interpretations are valid, I also personally don’t really see them.
First and foremost, people tend to bring up the fact that he has a lot of anger and resentment towards Enji, and how that could make him a lot like Enji due to how much anger and obsession Enji had, but I think this feels like an odd thing to say when the reasons and circumstances for these emotions are completely different.
Like, we all seem to agree that Natsu’s anger as a whole is completely warranted and justified, but some people seem to take it as a way to say that his anger towards Enji will inevitably make him LIKE Enji, which I just don’t see. Whenever we see Natsuo get angry in canon, he really doesn’t ever seem unstable or angry in a way that he would hurt someone close to him unintentionally.
At most, he slams his fist against a wall, but he otherwise just yells or says something passive-aggressive, and then just removes him from the room.
Like… I really don’t see how that makes him someone who’s at risk of harming others or being anything like the man we see Enji become.
If anything, I’d say that he’s proven to be quite different, with how he’s basically built an entire life for himself outside of the family.
That leads me to point two. Specifically, his treatment of Fuyumi. This essay in particular seemed to imply that Natsuo put his own desires before his sister’s, mainly referring to his behavior during that family dinner. However, I consider this to be a very surface level reading of him, since we’re not factoring in Fuyumi herself. Specifically, that she’s not really in the right either. It’s made very clear that her desire for a “normal family” is a coping mechanism. But what some people don’t understand is that Fuyumi can be unfair to Natsuo too. And even Shoto to a degree. There’s a very notable panel of her trying to convince Shoto to go through with some of her plans, and I’ve seen some people refer to it as “guilt-tripping.” Now, I don’t believe that Fuyumi was intentionally guilt tripping Shoto and Natsuo, but it’s worth noting. Especially since it’s shown that Natsuo feels obligated to be part of the family dinner, or to give Fuyumi this “normal family” that she wants. It’s clear that they don’t always see eye to eye, and yes, there are times when Natsuo handles things unhealthily. But people don’t realize that Fuyumi also handles things unhealthily too. So this isn’t a matter of Natsuo specifically being in the wrong.
Another point made by this specific essay is that Natsuo “abandoned” his family when he went to go to college and left Fuyumi and Shoto with Endeavor. This frankly isn’t a point that I’ll entertain for too long since it comes off as extremely unfair (more so than some other points). We know that Natsuo is 19, so he most likely moved out at an early age, so to say that a child leaving an abusive household is him “abandoning” his family just feels wrong. Especially since we have very little implying that he didn’t look back or consider this himself. If anything, Natsuo’s willingness to come back to Fuyumi proves otherwise.
Now, another thing people like to bring up is the fact that Natsu goes off on his own to marry his girlfriend, and that can symbolize him continuing the cycle to a degree since Enji did that, but I would say that’s an oversimplification. Enji started a family for the purpose of succeeding in his own endeavors, while Natsuo just seemed to do it to finally move on from Enji. If this was meant to be an intentional parallel, then I frankly just don’t see it, as a lot of this is circumstantial. As far as I can see, Natsuo just made a proper step in improving his life and healing more. Like, obviously his trauma isn’t going to go away because of that, but some people seem to be under the impression that him doing this might just cause him to spiral similarly to Enji, which I frankly just don’t see, especially since he doesn’t seem to be against the idea of getting the proper help for himself (studying medical welfare) Plus he really doesn’t show many signs of having a more traditional life like his own upbringing. Now, granted, we don’t see any of this life outside of the family (likely because it’s not super relevant to the main plot), but from what we can gather, it seems pretty healthy.
One last point that I saw is that Natsuo’s decision to cut Endeavor out of his life was bad because it would hurt the family more on account of gatherings and meetings where both he and Endeavor would both logically be involved. And the issue here is that I think it demonstrates a misunderstanding of how family relationships can play out. There are many families around the world with members that don’t like each other, but they still go to gatherings and such, simply making the decision to not interact or to remain at different places at the gathering. There are many ways that families can plan around these things if they acknowledge everyone’s feelings.
All in all, I just don’t see how Natsuo’s behavior and actions would lead to the situations that I’ve seen people bring up. At most, he has a lot to heal from, and it won’t be an easy process. But like, that’s just kind of a given.
Genuinely one of the worst analyses I’ve ever seen on Natsuo. Beat out only by that “hidden abusers” one.
Natsuo is more like his father than he wants to admit...and it is both tragic and unsettling.
Tumblr media
He does what he wants without regard for what the people around him want.
Sure, he'll go along with certain requests, like going to the family dinner because Fuyumi asked him to.
However, rather than be a polite host, he decides he'd rather embarrass his sister by being angry at their father all through said dinner and making things awkward for their guests. He didn't have to be there. Whoever he's talking to on the phone after the fact, maybe the girlfriend, he apologizes for bailing on their plans. He didn't even have to white-lie to Fuyumi. He straight up had other plans that night. So there are two ways you could look at this:
He conceded to a request to support his sister...then half-assed it.
Or he canceled his plans and went out of his way to be a prick.
He's not wrong for hating his father, that is 100% a normal reaction to an abusive parent, but he is wrong for not establishing his own concrete boundaries or respecting Fuyumi's.
Like Endeavor, Natsuo is pretty isolated within the family.
Mom’s out of the picture and contact with her is limited.
We all know what his relationship with his father is like.
His closest sibling 'died' when they were kids, but even then, Touya and Natsuo's relationship wasn't a good one. We know Touya spent years trauma-dumping on Natsuo, and little bro took it like a champ. Supporting one's siblings like that is admirable, but it does highlight a key difference between the brothers. Touya has memories of a happy childhood with their father. Natsuo does not. So he had to listen to his older brother crying for a past he knows nothing about, which had to have brought on a little resentment. "At least Dad loved you once. I never even got that much."
As stated above, Natsuo doesn't see eye to eye with Fuyumi. At least not enough that he respects her decision to forgive their father. Whether he supports that decision or not, he should love his sister more than he hates their father, and starting shit unprovoked over a dinner she asked him to be at is not a supportive decision.
His relationship with Shouto is hard to gauge. They were raised apart, sure, but they lived in the same house. So the fact that he didn't know Shouto's favorite food until he was fifteen is...odd. Natsuo never tried to have a conversation with him in passing? But I have a theory about that. With how Shouto behaved in the very beginning of the series, the mirror-image of their arrogant father, I think Natsuo had a, “Fuck, now there’s two of them," moment and actively avoided association with his younger brother. This may have contributed to him moving out even though he attends a college that's close enough that that he can casually stop by for dinner.
Tumblr media
He Actually Does Get Violent.
Not with other people, thankfully, but he does slam his fist against the door in this scene, which is an act of aggression.
This makes for an intense moment in animation, sure, but if you saw a person do this in real life, you’d be nervous about where that fist is going next.
I already went over this in the Endeavor analysis that I made a few months back, but the gist of it is taking out your anger on inanimate objects is unhealthy because you're training your brain to associate anger with violence, which has the potential to make it harder to dissociate in the long run.
Tumblr media
In his own way, he did abandon his family.
Fuyumi tells him to leave the family circumstances to her....and he just left her to it? She went to college to become a teacher and made a career work in spite of living in a volatile home. The series doesn't say where Natsuo is a student at, but he clearly lives close enough to home that he can drop by for a visit, so it's not like he went to some prestigious university out of town.
So yeah. Left his remaining brother and sister to their father.
The other point, though, is he's canonically studying medical welfare.
Medical welfare is the consideration of patient wellbeing, preserving individual dignity, promoting quality of life, and taking a holistic approach to healthcare that applies mental and emotional care to a patient, not just physical.
Tumblr media
So it's ironic this is where his brother ends up and he says absolutely nothing about it. Nothing about promising to come see him, nothing about asking the staff if this really the best arrangement they could come up with, no promises to Touya that he'll figure something out. He just ghosts and, like their father, that is really hypocritical.
In the end, he puts his own hate and feelings above everyone else’s.
This one's pretty closely related to my first point, but it does bear reiterating for the finale. Natsuo's decision to never see his father again is ultimately going to hurt his family more than it's going to spite Endeavor.  Going no-contact is a healthy choice and I don’t fault him for it at all.  But if he sticks to it, it’s going to lead to some serious ramifications down the road.
If he's strict enough to refuse to be in the same vicinity as Endeavor:
He won’t attend Touya’s funeral and support his grieving mother and siblings if Endeavor will be there.
Since we see in the epilogue Rei stays with Endeavor, Natsuo visiting her is going to be complicated.
If Fuyumi gets married, she might want her father at the wedding. Is Natsuo going to skip his sister’s wedding out of spite?
If Shouto gets married and decides to let their father be there, same story.
If Endeavor outlives Rei, will Natsuo miss her funeral?
And finally, Natsuo might have to come to terms with the fact his own children may want to meet their grandfather, which is a decision he can only control until they’re legal adults.  He can tell them how much of a monster Endeavor was all he wants, but those kids may still be curious about meeting the man in person, especially if they hear stories from other family members and know the former No. 2 and No. 1 is their grandfather.
I’m not saying Natsuo should forgive Endeavor, or even stop being angry with him because he has every right to his anger. But if he still wants a relationship with the rest of the family, he is going to have to exercise some form of compromise.  Especially with his children because he unfortunately has all the hallmarks to become the next Kotaro Shimura. This is a society where kids want to be heroes, and then there's Natsuo who has a history with the dark side of hero society, no matter the good Shouto does.
