eBaying on XSN!
For the past couple months, I’ve been occasionally livestreaming on Meltdown Comics’s new podcast network, XSN. XSN is a shopping network for geeks- similar to Home Shopping Network. It’s super quirky and has attracted a ton of really cool talent since it launched in November. We did a “Win a Date with Santa” game show for Cuddli, our geek dating app, and then Tprophet and I were just talking about Cuddli with their comedian co-host, Cliff.
This month, we’ve been doing something a bit different. I finally got frustrated with my art studio enough to do something about it, and Dave and I are basically redesigning it. The biggest problem was that I had so many action figures from my years of wallpapering my walls with them that they were all in huge boxes, and I couldn’t actually access any of my art supplies easily. This makes it less likely that I’ll produce art. It’s a serious problem!
The solution: The Pinguino/Mayberry Super Fun EBay Mystery Show! I hit up Melonpool creator Steve Troop, and he agreed to have his puppet co-host with me. We did an episode two weeks ago, and it was great! I sold a bunch of stuff, and cleared some space out. Last night, we got special guest Chris Saint on the show, the go-to bodypiercer for the stars. Tonight we’re gonna show off Ninjula’s new song! So it’s all going really well, and it’s pretty exciting.
So yeah! Buy my stuff! http://www.ebay.com/usr/penguin_palace
And watch us tonight at 8p PST on ShopXSN

Turtle Love
youtube
I’ve had a turtle ever since I was a kid- her name’s Gigaflop, but we usually just called her Turtle. She was really unique in that she’d let you pet the top of her head. Most reptiles aren’t that friendly, I think. She got to do some pretty special things as a turtle, so I wanted to share some of them.
Here’s a painting that she did in maybe 1996 or 1997. My friend Todd also had a turtle (larger, and not as friendly). We put them in boxes with canvases and paint, and they ran around the canvas to make these. I’m glad I still have it.
At some point after I moved to LA, I heard about a bar named Brennan’s where you could race turtles. I built a spoiler out of duct tape and paperclips, and put it on her shell. Added a racing stripe. A bunch of my friends came out to cheer her on. I remember Chris sticking his phone into the box to play “Eye of the Tiger” to psych her up. She raced against the house turtles, sliders, and got last place. It was still pretty awesome tho.
Next, at Akasan’s going away party, my sister built a huge cardboard replica of Japan (complete with correct Kanji) that was also a turtle racing track. We raced my turtle against Ashley’s tiny baby sliders. My turtle won that race.
She’s partied and chilled, and is pretty much the best turtle anyone could ask for. She’s participated in GISHWHES and been on periscope and watched pretty much all of the TMNT cartoons. <3

Peanuts
There was a Peanuts show that ran through Valentine’s Day at Meltdown this year. Linus was my favorite character, because of his blanket. I also had (and still have, actually) a blanket that I carry around from when I was a baby. Here’s some art that I made for the show!

Keto for Busy People
I’ve been doing a low carb diet off and on for a few years now called Keto, which I found on reddit. It mostly balances out my crazy trips where I end up going overboard on ramen and candy, and when done correctly, is a super effective way to lose weight. It’s a little tricky to do in stressmode, so here’s a primer on that!
Rules: You can have 20-50g carbs a day Meat, dairy, and most things that are green are okay. Read your food labels You can get bonus carbs by subtracting fiber! Those are Net Carbs!
Substitutions: Bread: Lettuce Tortilla: Lettuce, low carb tortillas Pasta: Zucchini noodles, Spaghetti Squash Rice: Cauliflower Rice. You can get it frozen at Trader Joes. Sugar: Splenda, Stevia Milk: Heavy cream, coconut milk, almond milk
Fast Things to Eat at Home: grocery store rotisserie chicken, sausages, cheese/string cheese, hard boiled eggs, almonds, jerkied meats, frozen veggies
If you have time to cook, you can make stuff like chili or pulled pork or something and have enough for all week.
Ordering Out: – Protein style is how you get a burger wrapped in lettuce – Replace your fries/potato with double veggie
In-n-Out: Protein style, doubledouble. I do plain and can eat it in the car. Carl’s Jr: Low Carb $5 Burger Stout: Wrap any burger in lettuce Pizza: sad. eat the toppings, throw out the crust Chinese Food: Be careful of sugar, it’s like in everything here Thai Food: Look at the salads. Steak salad? Mexican: Huevos Rancheros, meat-centric entrees, chicken caesar, bacon wrapped shrimp Sushi: Sashimi only Diners: Omlettes, salads, protein style burgers Indian: Tikka chicken Greek: Kebob, any pile of meat and veggies. Awesome salads.
Booze: Look up the carb count but usually straight liquor is ok, as is a glass of red wine a night.
Snacks: Broccoli with ranch dip, pork rinds with spinach dip, bacon (whole foods has bacon in their deli), cheeses, microwaved pepperoni, jicama slices, kale chips, seasoned almonds, pumpkin seeds
I hope this helps! My favorite keto sites are here: Keto Subreddit (amazing community) https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/ All Day I Dream About Food http://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/ Caveman Keto http://cavemanketo.com/ My Fitness Pal (for tracking) https://www.myfitnesspal.com/ Looking up Carb Counts http://www.wolframalpha.com/

All Hogwarts Eve
Adrianne (LA Dumbledore’s Army) and Damphyr (Drunkenfandom.com)
Letters floated in the air and butterbeer flowed aplenty last weekend, at All Hogwarts Eve, a Harry Potter party I threw with damphyr and Alicia. Guests arrived in costume, and claimed a House. A jar of homemade wands awaited, and many opted to take the wand that chose them. Then everyone got a patronous- marked by an animal sticker. A cauldron held challenges that could earn the wizard house points, and at the end of the night, Slytherin claimed the most points. The challenges were varied- some had you eat spikey fruit as an antidote to a potion, some made you try spotted dick, and some were as simple as selfies from your house.
(Ravenclaw House pic by Lindsey)
In Harry Potter, Hogarts does a big feast on Halloween, so we did the same. Some pesto cheese from Trader Joe’s became Dragon Head Cheese. Our main dish was roasted pig, sous vide for 12 hrs using this recipe. We had owl pies- adapting a cornish pasty recipe to work with adorable owl tins. Damphyr made pease porridge. We made a Crudité in a flowerpot using a celery root for a mandrake sitting in a bed of hummus and toasted bread crumbs. It looked a little too realistic, so not many people actually ate it.
Our dessert spread was impressive: Harry’s favorite treacle tart, Pumpkin breads, ginger cookies, chocolate frogs, Dumbledore’s favorite lemon drops, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Boozy Beans, Walnut and Fruit tarts, Jelly Slugs, Sour Worms. For the treacle tart, I had to make golden syrup from scratch, then I followed this recipe. It was almost like making candy. Walnut tart was this one and was a bit difficult to make. The beans had martini and beer flavored beans mixed into the jar, and people had to guess how many beer beans were in there.
Alicia handpainted these absolutely wonderful house banners that we hung around our room, and made a Three Broomsticks sign. They’re made of cardboard. Oddly, our party was mostly Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, which I totally wasn’t expecting
The star of the show were the drinks, though. damphyr’s new fandom drink blog, Drunkenfandom.com, created special recipes for the night. Her butterbeer was literally the best I’ve ever had- I’m pretty sure I drank 3 liters of it.  There was a Patronous Punch, which was a sour drink that glowed under blacklight and smoked. There was also the Goblet of Fire, a blue jello shot with a blue flame that you had to cast with a wand to ignite.
Because Harry Potter is British, we also did a tea bar with flowering teas, biscuits, and some very special Butterscotch Beer Tea from Riddle’s Tea Shoppe. It’s relaunching on Halloween: http://riddlesteashoppe.com/ (Side note: Aun-Juli makes the best tea I’ve ever had. I’m crazy addicted to the Tardis Tea flavor, and Butterbeer might be my second favorite flavor). Everyone got to take tea samples home to enjoy later!
We also did a sock drive for Dobby the House Elf! At the end of the night, we collected a bag full of socks, which will go towards a larger effort that the Los Angeles Dumbledore’s Army will be putting together! Socks are the best item you can give to the homeless- nothing feels as nice as a clean pair of socks!
Thanks to everyone who came out to the party, brought fun things to share, and donated towards the event. All Hogwarts Eve was awesome cuz of your enthusiasm for the series and your competitiveness to do well for your House!

San Diego ComiCon 2015
ComiCon time again! This year, I hopped back to press photography, which I dearly missed. I was shooting for Comic Book Resources, and got to shoot press rooms for Arrow, Flash, iZombie, Heroes Reborn, and Colony. Heroes Reborn was especially meaningful, since I shot that 6 years ago when they were completely unknown- I was one of like 2 photographers in that room. I also did the Outcast red carpet event, and a cosplay Harley event at the DC booth.
This year the pressrooms all felt a bit cramped- there are so many outlets these days, and space is precious. Even so, I got great placement most of the time.
Thursday I lucked out and got Wired Cafe access, which was super fun because a ton of my friends ended up also getting in. Some of them I hadn’t really spent time with in years. My favorite part was a Ben and Jerrys booth that did boozy floats. Pecan caramel is nice in whiskey.
I also cosplayed this year- I was a cyberpunk Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time. Pretty much I had more pink in my hair than normal, and a golden wire crown.
Dave and I crashed with XBS, Methal, and their awesome kid Haya, and Methal’s sister. It was on the beach in OB and a fantastic place to recharge after being around people all day.
Sunday was awesome cuz I got to hang out in the Meatwad dome at Adult Swim- a virtual trippy roller coaster. Also had Grilled Cheese truck and a ton of Hello Kitty macaroons from their popup truck. We got some Google Cardboard from Nerd HQ, too. And we visited the Cat Cafe, and watched a toddler play with cat toys!
I know you’re actually here for ComiCon pics and not me rambling, so here they are. Some more might get posted later too:

At Hacker Drinkup last Wednesday, I was telling Enzo about a plan to cover Keith’s car in hot pink long pile fur. He’d asked me to do this like 6mo ago and we had the fur already. Enzo looked at me and said “Why don’t we do this right now?” It was 10p. “Now? Okay!”
We rallied the troops, who all had been enjoying Smoke’s Poutine and beers at District 13 on a fine Canada Day. We converged in the parking garage of an upscale Hollywood apartment complex, and spent the next four hours spray-gluing fluff to a beat up old beetle with its top cut off.
It was glorious.

Snake!
The other day, our friend Jesten posted this:
And of course we asked if we could eat it. Though most of our friends said “free the snake,” Jesten killed, gutted, and cleaned it out. He has a small dog that the snake would have eaten, so its probably for the best. He brought it over today. Tendency found this recipe, so we decided to give it a try: http://www.cooks.com/recipe/ei70g2g0/southern-fried-rattlesnake.html
The snake felt like a wet, stiff version of those wooden toy snakes. It was exceptionally difficult to cut- we tried almost every knife in the house. Dona set to work sectioning it into pieces once we figured out which knife to use, and I modified the recipe to keto/paleo.
1 egg 1/4 cup Heavy Cream 1/4 cup Water Canola Oil Garlic Powder Cajun Seasoning Salt and Pepper 1 cup Almond Flour 1 Rattlesnake
Cut your cleaned snake into pieces. In one bowl, whisk egg, cream, and water. In another, mix your almond flour, garlic, seasoning, and salt+pepper. Dredge your snake through the dry mix, then dip it into the egg mix. Fry your snake and set it onto a rack.
We didn’t have a deep fryer, so we cooked ours in 1in of canola oil until about golden brown, but we probably overcooked it. Our snake was chewy, but was still very moist under the breading, and we’ve heard it’s supposed to be flakier. Everyone in the group agreed that it reminded them of frog. It’s very very bony. I deboned a bunch of it and fed it to my domestic cat who’s never hunted in her life, and she absolutely LOVED it.

I’ve got some bad news, writers. In comics, the artist works harder than we do. On a simple one to one basis, they just plain work harder. A writer can easily write a script a week (or at least, should be able to.) An artist has to spend an entire month on the art. That’s a 1:4 ratio. That means...

New Photography!
I haven’t posted here in a while, and have uploaded a few new photosets on Flickr! I still have a huge backlog of photos and am slowly chugging through editing. Enjoy!
Here’s some shots of London, where we visited the International Puzzle Party last summer with Dave’s family. I painted a handmade puzzle cabinet replica that was on display. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pinguino/sets/72157650932298542/
I took a trip to Croatia to work on Cuddli and meet the coder I’ve been skyping with the past few months. Here’s some photos of the trip, where we hung out at a local birthday party in a magical fairyland, and ran around a castle. Zagreb is sort of like a budget version of Italy with an Eastern European flair. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pinguino/sets/72157651098966902/
Last weekend I took a trip to Seattle to see a dear ninja friend get married. It was an alternative wedding, and we ended up throwing ninja stars at trees. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pinguino/sets/72157651010378608/
