Hi Euna! I have a super simple question. In ITS2 episode 5 while the guys are talking at night infront the camper van jimin makes a comment on jungkook's sleeping habits. It was super cute but I've been seeing translators translate his speech as both the present tense and past tense and idk which one is right.

For example some translate it as "I never knew when jungkook went to sleep" vs "I never know when jungkook goes to sleep" And I've also seen discrepancies as to whether or not jimin said "sounds" present tense or "sounded" past tense.

Would love if you could clear it up please if you have the time!

I'd be more than happy to answer your question, though it might not be as simple as I'd like it to be.

Since meaning is so heavily interlaced with context in Korean, it can be a tricky language to translate word for word to English. It doesn't always follow the same conventions for conveying present or past tense, and especially in casual conversations, those kinds of grammatical structures tend to become even more loose. There's a lot of instances where a translator would have to insert missing (understood) subjects and tenses just to make the sentence clear for English audiences. But as a result, there can be times when there isn't exact consensus as to which tense to use/how best to convey the missing components. Sometimes this is due to the inherent ambiguity of the original sentences. Sometimes this is human error/confusion on part of the translator.

But to answer your question anon, for the recent episode, my opinion is that it would make the most sense to translate what Jimin said in present tense.

정국이는 진짜 언제 잠드는지 모르게써. 어? 자나..? 이러면 갑자기 어느순간..허어어얽~ I really can't tell when Jungkook goes to sleep. At a certain point I'd think "Oh? Is he sleeping?" and then suddenly I'd hear him go "Huuuaaaak"

Past tense limits Jimin's "not knowing" as a specific, isolated event, when actually the phrase in Korean doesn't seem to have the same kind of temporal constraint. He could be talking about this one recent instance where he couldn't tell if JK was sleeping or not, but the way he phrases it suggests that it's not a one time thing. That it's a continuous source of funny confusion for him.

It's that kind of domestic, casually knowledgeable way he talks about JK's sleeping habits that made this moment a hit with the k-side today, and I think that nuance of meaning really only comes across by translating it with the present tense!

THIS PART THOUGH. It’s beyond me why the fandom (and even Tae and JK solos) turn a blind eye to hard tkk shippers. The literal foundation of the “they’re a ‘real’ couple” narrative (that’s widely spread and accepted in order to explain away JM and what tkk have actually said about their own relationship) boils down to: “JK is a mindless company puppet and bad boyfriend who is fine with doing fan service with his boyfriend’s best friend (or pretend best friend depending on who you’re talking to) right in front of said boyfriend’s face because fame/money/company said to and because he lacks free-will and is also being abused by his ‘fan service’ partner and doesn’t stand up to him even though he makes him uncomfortable + Tae is a feeble abused soul incapable of standing up for himself with so little self worth that he stands by and allows his boyfriend to do fan service with another member even though it hurts him deeply but also ignores how his boyfriend is regularly ‘harassed’ by his soulmate/‘fake’ friend and doesn’t intervene instead choosing to tell anyone who will listen how he loves his boyfriend’s ‘harasser’ best and call him his soulmate + BOTH of them act out in petty ways to make the other jealous.” . . . And that’s not even touching on what all of that says/implys about the other members. It’s so toxic and f’ed up idk how anyone calling themselves ARMY would ever accept such a thing.

TLDR; no one spreads more toward Tae or JK more than hard tkkrs. And I agree that I’ve never seen a jkkr hate on either that wasn’t proven to be a fake account or wasn’t immediately called out and shut down by other jkkrs 🤷‍♀️

So, Taekookers despise Jimin with a passion but even some Jikookers despise Taehyung as well, especially when he is with JK. Both sides are equal in this matter. Shouldn't it be "hate the shippers, not the ship"? Taekook, Jikook, all of them are part of the same band.

JKK Pep talk. Don't let other shippers get into your head. Don't set your expectations too high with Jikook moments. We will get some, but don't expect too much. So. BH scripts lives and is pushing a Jikook agenda... and yet.. they forgot to make Tae move BEFORE the live started? What, so they went through the whole “Jikook checklist” of “don’t forget to hold hands or sit too close or lean on each other and touch every opportunity and stare and giggle and have a private conversation..” and didn’t notice their “FS agenda” pair weren’t even sitting next to each other?? And wait.. I thought this whole “Jikook FS” thing was to hide the “ReAl” gay couple.. so not only did the BH Jikook shippers/forcers “forget” to have Jikook sit together.. but the entire group (including said “real couple”) forgot to make sure Taekook were as far apart as possible to help hide the “feelings” ??? But then some staff remembered halfway through and told Tae to move? Even though he didn’t even glance off camera once and started moving as soon as Jimin stood up?? 

Y’all.. what goes on in their minds.. it amazes me sometimes. They think there is an entire company and group wide conspiracy to force one pair to do fanservice to hide a real couple, that this has been going on for YEARS, and yet somehow the “powers that be” forgot after all of these years to be sure their pair were sitting together? How is this easier for them to believe than: Tae got tired of being squished between Jikook and, after already trying to get more space once, decided to just move on his own? You don’t even have to “ship” Jikook or believe it’s real to accept the simplest and most logical solution. Jimin and Jungkook kept accidentally squeezing him out so he moved to be more comfortable. No shipping involved. Why is that so hard?

That’s not even getting into the reverse delulu conspiracy that could be made here which is: if BH is forcing member interactions wouldn’t where everyone was sitting at the start be the “scripted” arrangement since it was set up and approved before the camera was on, and wouldn’t the sudden move be the “sign”/”script breaker” in this situation? 🙃 That was almost painful to type. I’m glad Jikookers largely aren’t conspiracy theorists because that would get old fast.
