hello everyone, as promised, we’ve prepared some book recs for our Summer Reading Challenge prompts :)
for each prompt, we’re bringing 4 books into the spotlight, as well as giving you some additional recs because we simply couldn’t settle for just four great reads!
join the challenge on storygraph
Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
How do you play the game when the cards are stacked against you? When Ace, an anonymous texter, begins exposing Niveus Private Academy students’ secrets, Devon & Chiamaka have to put a stop to it, before the texts destroy their future. A fast-paced, mystery novel with a page-turning plot twist makes for an amazing social commentary read that will have you questioning every character. (review brought to you by our lovely Kenny @coffeecupstudyblr) > this read has: lgbtq+ main characters of color, mystery, tension
If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio
As one of seven young actors studying Shakespeare at an elite arts college, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingenue, extra. But when the casting changes, and the secondary characters usurp the stars, the plays spill dangerously over into life, and one of them is found dead. The rest face their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, and themselves, that they are blameless. > this read has: murder, mystery, devotion, intrigue
The Maidens by Alex Michaelides
At the elite St. Christopher’s College in Cambridge, the past and the present collide when a student is murdered. Alumna Mariana, a group therapist, returns to her university where she begins to investigate the enigmatic Greek Tragedy professor. As she becomes increasingly enmeshed in a web of intrigue, Mariana’s obsession begins to grow more and more… (review brought to you by our lovely Theo @spoonieacademia) > this read has: a secret society, mystery, high stakes
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Having made some bad decisions, she's the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide at just twenty years old. Somehow, she is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most elite universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her? Tasked with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies, she dives into the world of money, power, and intrigue. But their occult activities turn out to be more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive. > this read has: the macabre, mystery, supernatural forces (! check CWs before reading)
Extra recs below the cut :
More books with a dark academia premise: Dead Poets Society by N.H. Kleinbaum • A Study in Charlotte by B. Cavallaro • Good Girls Lie by J.T. Ellison • The Furies by K. Lowe

2021/01/26 🌸 chilling and journaling ft. some lemongrass tea. my eyes have started to hurt when I use electronic devices for a long time so I’m trying to go analog with as many things as is convenient. it’s definitely a lot easier now as it’s still winter break for me, but we’ll see how things go once the semester starts next month. how do you guys regulate screentime?
on another note, it’s my 21st birthday today! can’t do much but my family and I are going to have a small barbecue this evening with just the five of us.
hope y’all have an amazing day <3
