This reference comic is shared, here, after I was asked for authorisation to share it on tumblr, by another Golden Sun fan. As such, I came to the conclusion that it was worth a share in this archive blog.

Une BD "fiche référence" que j'ai personnellement composée, afin de garder une trace claire du déroulé réel de cette séquence, dans Golden Sun 3, à l'issue des Ruines de Teppe.

En effet, cette séquence s'est plusieurs fois retrouvée citée, de façon tronquée, dans des espaces de fans de Golden Sun, notamment pour mettre en lumière, de supposés éléments romantiques, entre Stella et Kiara.

Et, bien que j’apprécie le concept du couple Stella+Kiara, sans en être un réel aficionado, il m'a semblé pertinent de partager cette BD-référence personnelle, à l'occasion d'une citation récente du type décrit plus haut, pour, tout de même, remettre en perspective, avec un biais réduit, le cadre effectif de la séquence.

Au final, après un échange où l'on m'a demandé l'autorisation de repartager cette fan-bd sur ce site de blogging, je me suis rendu à l'idée qu'il pouvait être pertinent que je partage cette référence, plus avant, sur ce blog d'archive.

Golden Sun themed design, for a full deck of Tarot à Jouer

The most about this creative project, is in the aforementioned linked thread, so, refer to it first, for playing guideline and general design context.

Now, still, here I will rewrite the general gist of it, as well as add a bit more context and overjoyed ramblings. (Under a read more, for browsing convenience)

Thus : At the end of April 2024, I completed this fan project, started in early April 2020 : "Do a complete Golden Sun Tarot à jour design".

The impetus came from an impromptu discussion, on the Golden Sunrise discord server, where the subject was : "Golden Sun games", eventually evolving toward "Golden Sun versions of games"

And, remembering a few fanarts of (cartomancie) Tarot cards, with Golden Sun illustrations, including on this very blogging website, it clicked with me to entertain having a "playable" Golden Sun tarot deck.

Because, yes, if it wasn't clear already : I love -really love- the "Tarot à jouer" classical card game.!

And, more precisely : A more casual way to play it : 5 players Tarot ; where the player taking the bid call for an ally, by way of choosing a King card, whose owner would be on his size for the part.

Anyway, I, eventually, got to experiment and, ultimately, pinpoint a style and general guideline for the look of the cards : -Palette-conversion to fit the limited one of a traditional tarot à jouer card ; -A custom yet coherent set of arrangements for the symbols of the numbered cards ; -Creative "tête-bêches" of edited crops from official arts of the characters, for the Jacks (Valets), Knights (Cavaliers), Queens (Reines) and Kings (Rois)

-And, eventually, the more time-demanding : For each of the trumps, to fit the classical use of thematic pairs of scenes, a contrasting and thematic parallel couple of scenes, one from GS1&2, and one from GS3 DD.

This last endeavour was what took me the longer, with most of the project's time being dedicated to define and actually capture+edit, all of the fitting scenes, for the 21 trump cards design.!

Eventually, again, as I would progress along the completing of the trump suite, I decided and added the primer-part about casual rules to actually play, this 5 player tarot game, behind the whole concept.

Basically, the proposed house rules are the ones I have been playing with, for long, and they include :

Calling the king only after after being done with the "chien". (A quite common and loved casual tweak.)

An overall lower risk bids-and-points system, with more lower value bids, as well as flat values contracts for bids, instead of multipliers.

All of that because, indeed, I love Golden Sun a lot, yet I love the game of 5 players tarot even more, having played it for even longer than I have been Golden sun.

So, the both of them combined, to offer an entry point for the Golden Sun enjoyers, into the boundless entertainment potential of the "Tarot à jouer" and into the vast and everlasting genre of traditional card games.

Ultimately : I love and I am proud of this dear and very personal project.

So, a year after it completed, I felt like it deserved to be archived here, for easy reference.

Making-of under the cut

As soon as I thought that "this very sequence is reminding me of the Yugi-oh opening", I had to try gif-ing it, as well as try and synch-up the opening to a yugi-oh opening theme. (This would be my first fanvid for the pokémon horizon anime.)

And, so, along the fanvid, as I had set to do, I made a first gif of the sequence, but a somewhat "regular size one" (i.e. 360x202 pixels) So, for reference : Plain link to the upload of this "first take" gif : https://www.zupimages.net/up/24/15/73iz.gif

Now, as I go with sharing a few of my poké-horizons gifs, I may as well try redoing + refining this favorite gif of "Liko-oh!" -at 540 pixels wide and still moderately light (i.e. under 5Mo)- … And, so, this is how I set to do the gif for this post.

I should note that, to, again, keep the file-size under 5Mo, a) I removed the "quasi-double" frames, that visually look the same as the ones right after them, doubling the time this following frame stay on screen. (because, naturally, less images means smaller file.) b) I used, as usual, custom-palettes, carefully colour-picked from the frames, to then convert the frames to indexed colours with it, without filters in the palletization process. (as both provide a really lower file-size than when using automatic-built palettes or filtering the way frames are palletized.)

Also, I tackled picking the significant palette, through a different angle than for the original gif, iterating from my remarks, noted-down, along the making of the "first take" original gif. (Overall, it mostly consisted in : balancing a bit more toward transcribing the end-point lights, trading up, for that, some gradient and some details, on Liko and her pendant, in the earlier parts of the sequence.)

… All in all, in the end, I think it is fine to share. I hope you enjoy gazing at it.

"Trainers Sentai Horizoners!"

Explaining the private joke underneath :

An ambitious try at a still-relatively-light gif, transcribing my first intuitive impression as I watched the unedited reference sequence of pokémon horizon :

"With slight tweaks, this looks exactly like a team/sentai roll call, where Liko&Roy would be regular main team members, and Dot would be an extra member, just joining, with a different way to call-in. -you know, a bit more extra-epic-."

And, that was the whole postulate of shaping-in this piece : Edit & Highlight the "empowering team roll-call" vibes.

Still, shaping-in this joke gif the most seriously, with extra focus on balancing image quality and file-size, the self-imposed file size-cap being at 5 Mo, with still an image size of the default high-pixel-width, on tumblr.

Horizons' dynamic duo

Enjoying the poké-horizon series, I got into crafting multiple fanvids and animated gifs, for myself.

Thus, I decided to also try-out crafting some entertaining ones, formatted for tumblr, to share, publicly, here.

Starting with a simple, humble yet efficient animated gif of the series' dynamic duo, agreeing to call forth, a symbiotic double-attack. (excerpt from episode 16)

post-montages and assessments

I am now a solid year into setting "post-montage feeds" projects. i.e. curating creative timelines of web-posts, with the purposes of : a) collecting posts of interests b) building a cohesive whole from these base elements, c) having this cohesion make the posts resonate together

And, so , I thought I should jolt-down, here, fair assessments about these creative endeavours and practice. (under a cut because it will be -quite- long)

For starter, I have redacted a forum post about the subject of web-feeds, in general, in a fandom context, and about considering post-montage and intertext in particular : https://goldensunrise.jcink.net/index.php?showtopic=4319

So, yes, in short, this forum post/thread is from a POV of : "The golden sun fandom". as, actually, I ended up considering these curations/montage, due to GS communities diffusing into numerous social-media, and thus making engaging with the (GS) fandom, now, less about finding a home-community one likes, and more about having to sample and search around, for dispatched pieces of fan-content, with many communities being now more about "like minded people that happen to love Golden Sun" than about the formerly dual/reversed "collective that love Golden Sun with some affinity of heart".

... Again, to experience what I mean by post-montage, firsthand, you may have a browse at my main "keffect" tumblr blog.

And, indeed, I decided to try that because both : I had to register an account, in order to properly search and browse fan-content, around this social-site way of working, in this fandom ecosystem.

And, then, as I had to keep it active, I should as well... creatively push the envelope of what one can do, around here.

This, combined with me, wishing to archive and share, the core of fandom content I had gathered along the years, really could only result in this : Creatively curate a synthesis breadth of old and new content, putting the creative contribution into an aspect of the system, that is little to not tracked or "metric-ed" : the feeds and timelines.

The "vibes", the "funny juxtapositions of posts"... And all manner of similar seldom tracked actual intertext content.

In the end : It is fun to do such creative blogging/curating, really fun.

I even also started doing a similar thing on x-dot-com, i.e. the former twitter/"birdsite" (at "heggnox") -timeline archives of this birdsite!heggnox project should have their own dedicated blog posts at key times-

Anyway : I feel like the main caveat of doing post montages is that the algorithms and way for people to discover blogs, do not factor-in the collection and composition aspects of blogs, mostly revolving around the isolated posts, thus making original posts the main way to get found.

I am somewhat fine with doing my little post-composing game, like that, on my own, for my own fun of browsing it back, and enjoying it again and again. I mean, I am quite familiar with doing such, as I already do it, offline, for fan-vids/"amvs" I edit for myself. (Because, you know, the hustles of having to handle legal and copyrights, if one uploads any fanvid on any platform, as of today...)

Still, if you like the concept of post-montage, keep it in mind, sometime when you are about to share any handful of posts : Think a tad about how the posts fit together best, how they connect to what you have posted previously, maybe it also reminds you of something ?

In short : Sometime, take a step back, and revel in the collective of posts, as much as you usually consciously enjoy the isolated posts. After all, one actually absorbs these feeds, already, just don't focus much on them... So, why not mind them at time, and play with them as we do ?

Liko being the realest about the pokedex

Full context and french version under the cut.

So, I am starting to watch the pokemon horizons anime, in its (nice) French localisation, as they become available on the French free TV Gulli (and on its replay website).

The series felt good quite quickly and it is always nice and relaxing to enjoy watching pokemon in my native language. Furthermore when the plot and character are this rounded.

Anyway, I was enjoying watching episode 4 and got to this very point where Liko asks her motismart-pokedex about its entry on "Chochodile" (i.e the french name for "Fuecoco") while searching for the disappeared Chochodile of the crew. And, there, right after the usual "generic pokedex entry lecture", with the pokedex screen in frame, it cuts to this depicted scene, with liko's French voice delivering an on point : "Merci. Mais, ça ne m'aide pas beaucoup." (In English, it translates to the captioned : "Thanks. But, it doesn't help me much.")

I let out a heartfelt chuckle hearing the line. And, this is when I was confirmed it was well worth waiting for the french localization to discover this series. This good feeling from a mundane line is the stuff of good shows.

So, here we are, I took the time, afterward, to snap, edit, compose and caption this frame, thinking it could, at least make for a fine reaction image.

All in all : This is a little nugget of love for this great animated series and for its great French localization, following strong of the original pokemon series French version.

Epic introduction

An animated gif of an excerpt of Shenhua's introductory cutscene. "Shenhua, from Shenmue 2, disc 4, right as she jumps into the stormy river, to save a fawn."

Context : I had made this, years ago, as a reference illustration, for forum discussion about Shenhua's re-design in Shenmue 3.

My forum post had went with a concluding "insert gif of sh2-shenhua jumping in the river, here" To then be edit-expanded with : "Edit : I made the Shenhua gif [...]" To, ultimately conclude with : "Anyway, I miss Shenhua in her old 1-2 days, but, I'm gonna give SH3-Shenhua a chance."

Energize!

An animated gif of the red dino charge ranger doing the part of his pre-transformation choreography, along with his "energize" call.

A gif edit I have made years ago, from an excerpt of a promotional episode preview for the first dino charge episodes broadcasts.

A bit heavy in size, but it stays a nice snap into a really "up here" opener epic moment of the dino charge series, series that has its ups and downs, but stay solid enough.

Addendum-edit (14th July 2024) : Under the cut : July 2024 redo of this gif + notes

Having getting quite better, with years, at hand-building palettes, from pictures, to create either pixel art or gif from them, I decided to finally give this veteran 2015 gif a new spin.

Basically, the 1st big difference lay in the file size : the palette being hand-crafted, with a more used eye, makes the image convertible to an indexed colors mode, without needing to apply filters and thus, well, colors being a lot more grouped makes the encoding smaller.

Other than that, I leaned a lot more into the gif-nature of the animation, keeping any "gifing artefact" that fit the animation. Hence why I kept the grey pixels that look akin to some remnant image or motion blur, for instance.

En : Thinking about the Game boy color version of "Harry Potter and the chamber of secret" and about how one plot-quest has mandragores escaping, next to as soon as the prof leaves. ... Does this mean the mandragores were ever-watching, for the first opportunity to try for an escape ? ... Anyway I felt lie concept-sketching this mind-ficlet : "Peeking-out lil' mandragore, watchful for an escape" Fr : Je repensais à la version Game boy color de "Harry Potter et la chambre des secrets" et au fait que l'une des quêtes principales présente des mandragores qui prennent la poudre d'escampette, sitôt que le professeur tourne le dos pour s'absenter. ... Est-ce que cela impliquerait que les mandragores étaient constamment à l'affut, de toute opportunité pour elles de filer à l'anglaise ? ... Quoi qu'il en soit, je me sentait l'humeur de croquer le concept de cette perle d'image mentale de : "Une p'tite mandragore qui furette pour se carapater."

Classical-board-game Battleships crossover with Golden sun

A GS-shippings board for use in the classical "Battleships" game.

Inspired by the extensive shipping scene of

the 'good old' Golden sun fandom'.

(shipping wars entertainment -> ship wars game => GS Battleships)

The board is just basis for open-ended use by interested players :

Entertaining to look at and, hopefully, also to play with,

however one wish.

For instance :

a) Each "Battle ship boat" might represent

a collection of couple the player like in the same setting.

So, the game might be a game of

"Guessing the playing partner's favorite collections of GS ships"

b) You might also call out the cells by their fan-nicknames.

c) house-rule some traits or rules to some couples or characters.

Ultimately, this is an humble brick to build on however you wish.

For additional info :

This had been made so that

battleship variants using 5-cells boats

can not induce repeated character.

So, the grid should work with any battleships base you choose to use.

Animated yugi-yami funcards

Veteran animated gif yugioh tcg funcards of Yugi and Yami-Yugi. (with base Yugi and Yami-Yugi funcards for convenience) Originally made years ago, by my younger self, and shared on french yugi-oh fan-forums, years ago.

Effects in English : Both cards let one equip them to a monster and gain control of it. Yugi can be returned to hand to shuffle a monster to the deck, while Yami can be returned to hand to draw a card.

The monster is a regular effect monster, with the use of a token-color frame being a creative licence just for the sake of the joke : "The character just has a token appearance in Golden sun 2."
