ok thank god he wasn’t a total embarrassment 😮‍💨😮‍💨
shrike and i have our first handling class in months tonight. i’m planning on going every week until the show at the end of december. i am determined to have a good dog at this show 😂 he’ll be in a sporting clip so if we want to catch judge eyes he has to be on his best behavior

what kind of harnesses and collars don't damage a dog's hair coat?
this is a great question, in my experience padded satin collars work very well for poodle coats. i know folks have had success with rolled leather collars for less fragile coats, like spaniels or shepherds. idk about harnesses, i’ve never looked into non-coat damaging options, but i’d imagine if you can find a satin lined harness that would be a good option. the best method for protecting hair is minimizing friction, so avoid materials like biothane or rough fabric.

Awaiting trial pictures so here are some training pics in the mean time.
I am bursting with pride to announce that Polly and Elizabeth earned their IGP1 today on their first try! They took high IGP1 and they also took helper's favourite. Polly is now Themiscyra's Act of True Love IGP1 CGC WAC ATT I am so incredibly grateful to have a home like Elizabeth and honoured she trusted me to place a puppy with her as a first time working home/handler, taking a chance on me as a first time breeder! I am even more humbled knowing I bred and co-own this amazing dog. Polly is the first Themiscyra doberman to achieve an IGP title and what a victory it is to know she accomplished it at only 3 years old, from my very first litter. Polly is out of the Frozen litter and was known as "Anna" (Pink collar girl).

at least he hasn't tried to breed with your pillow. that was the end of testicles for mine
ya know, if shrike tried to hump anything other than dogs he'd be a street urchin in 3 seconds flat

what kind of collar and leash do you have for your dogs
this is a loaded question because i have over a dozen collars and leashes 😂 i have quite a few buckle collars from the shop Gray and Hound, as well as some biothane buckle and limited slip collars. shrike has a satin martingale to protect his show coat. as for leashes, i prefer 4-6ft biothane ones with basic nickel snaps or trigger clasps. i also have 10ft, 20ft, and 30ft longlines with locking carabiners for hiking and exploring. i have a couple slip leads for quick potty breaks, a biothane french martingale, and a braided satin show lead for shrike. oh, and some detachable biothane leash handles 😂

a good barnhunt trial day! both dogs only got one novice run because i had to leave for work, but they both did well! denver got a qualifying score and hunted well through her anxiety (lots of dogs, busy trial), and shrike’s run was 46 seconds, earning him first place in his class! very exciting for baby’s first novice run in a trial 🥳
we go back on sunday for 2 more runs each and hopefully RATN’s for both of them 🤞🏻

i hate what ARAs did to people's perception of ethical dog breeders. it's adding insult to injury to accuse them of being animal abusers and contributing to overpopulation when that has never been the case. they are more oft than not people who care so deeply about dogs they sink all of their money, time, and resources into something that is no more than a hobby in many peoples' eyes. they're keeping an incredibly amazing part of history alive, and working hard to imrpove on their dog's health and performance with every breeding. It's always done out of love and care for their breed, and for dogs in general. no good breeders wants to see their dogs end up in shelters or on the streets and they will do their due diligence to keep any dog they produce in a loving and appropriate home. It's not a perfect system, by all means. Some breed clubs can actively promote harmful standards and there's often some infighting with every breed. But there are so many more compassionate people involved in the purebred community than there are bad actors. and they deserve respect, not to be spat on by detractors and people who will never understand the value in preserving history.

5 week medication update!
her appetite is much better, but still picky when it comes to crunchy treats; this could be and most likely is because of her broken tooth, one of her bottom molars has a little sheered off chip that isn’t urgent/doesn’t have exposed pulp, but i can’t imagine it’s painless. so the appetite situation is a toss up between meds and tooth.
denver’s energy level is up a little more, too. the weather’s much better, daily highs of 75-80 and we even had some rain a few days, so i’ve been essentially forcing her to exercise and go on walks. her general anxiety on said walks is noticeably lower. she’s easier to direct out of a reaction, and i’ve been able to very successfully avoid reactions at all several times in the last 2 weeks. her walks are always intended to provide exercise and relieve stress, so they’re very denver-led and sniffing oriented, which is a great management method for her behavior.
i’ve come up with a long and detailed plan for tackling her car anxiety, and it’s already improving. the anxiety seemed localized to the crate, so for now she’s riding in a buckled harness, and we’ll do separate crate training in the house. i am very optimistic about this.
we haven’t tried trazodone again, but im considering trying a dose for a nail trim. it’s a lot less stressful than car rides, and it’s easy to just stop if it doesn’t work out. i want to make sure the traz isn’t a good fit, and i’ll mention it to our vet at the next appointment.
overall, im feeling really good about the medication. the only sticking points im noticing are her lower energy and appetite, but that’s normal for this time frame, and she’s also middle-aged and out of shape, so im not too worried.
