『Pac-Land』 Ms. Pac-Man, Pepper Pac-Man & Pac-Mom

For the US release of Pac-Land, Ms. Pac-Man was replaced with Pepper Pac-Man. Due to Bandai Namco's legal battle with AtGames, Pac-Mom took their place in the 2022 re-release of Pac-Land.

Top: in Super Mario Bros., Peach's height is not matched to either Small Mario, who is much shorter than her, nor to Super Mario or Fire Mario, who is much taller.

Bottom: in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, additional sprites have been drawn that show her overcoming the height differences to kiss Mario.

『Mortal Kombat』 Sweaty SNES Censorship

Nintendo’s Mario Club team sent word to Acclaim and Sculptured Software that Mortal Kombat had to be sanitized on Super Nintendo. Blood was changed to gray “sweat” that didn’t splatter on the ground, unlike blood from the arcade version. The change benefitted hardware concerns as well as satisfied Nintendo’s strict guidelines.

“It was more like real sweat because it disappeared, and that made Nintendo happy,” Peters explained,“ but [dissipating instead of splattering] also got sprites off the screen. There were only so many sprites we could render per frame. Having sweat linger on the ground meant more sprites, meant flashing or other issues with the characters.”

『Animal Crossing Series』 Design System

In Animal Crossing, there are instances where the game allows players to create their own custom designs on a 32x32 pixel canvas. This 'design system' is a lot like the pixel art program, MS Paint. These user created designs can be used as wallpaper, on clothing, as the town's flag and elsewhere.

The most unorthodox use of this feature triggers when you encounter a traveler named Blanca. Inexplicably, this white cat has no face of their own, so they requests that the player draw them one.

Animal Crossing's design system continued into future games, but the ability to design Blanca's face only appeared in the next two entries, Wild World and City Folk.

How designs work in Animal Crossing New Horizons is a little different compared to previous entries in the series. Creating designs is pretty much the same, but when they're applied to an item, a smoothing effect is applied to them.

『Electronic Gaming Monthly』 Issues #33 & #93

Issue #33 (April 1992) of Electronic Gaming Monthly featured the infamous Sheng Long April Fool's Day prank. Sheng Long either use Ryu or Ken's sprites as a base.

As you can see, Sheng Long's Shoryuken is engulfed in a transparent flame. A similar effect was later used by Capcom for Ken's fierce Shoryuken Super Street Fighter II∶ The New Challengers. This has become a staple of Ken's in-game persona ever since.

With the release of Street Fighter III∶ New Generation, EGM would bring back the Sheng Long for their 1997's April Fool's Day issue.

Like the SSFII prank, this version of Sheng Long uses Ryu or Ken's sprites as a base. The faux Street Fighter's characters sprites and the artwork used for his versus screen bust were crafted by EGM editor Mike Vallas.
