The fire was burning steadily when Wolfwood returned to the camp. Milly was snoring gently in her sleeping bag. Meryl sat back to the fire watching the five moons chase each other across the sky. She stiffened as the sand scrunched beneath his steps. 

Wolfwood started, awkwardly, “So the tall one says you were taking every self-defense lesson you could find. Guess you learned a thing or two over the last couple of years.”

“Top of my class you know. I was left to figure things out, and I did.”

They sat staring out across the dunes. He didn’t know what to say. He let the silence hang until it was broken by a soft sniffle. She was crying? 

Meryl was hugging her knees tight to her chest, she whispered between soft sobs, “You left, Nick. You just left. And then you came back. When it really mattered. You saved me. Because I needed saving, again. And we watched Vash fight so hard…so hard.” Her lip trembled, she clenched her fists and her jaw. “I was so mad that you wouldn’t let me look for him. You didn’t trust me to be safe about it. And so you just left again.” 

“I didn’t leave you.” Meryl barely moved, but her gaze shifted from the dunes to his face. She saw his jaw tense. “I just left.” He didn’t know what staying looked like. He had been so young when he was taken from the orphanage. And then Livio…

Meryl relieved him of trying to say more. “It was my fault Vash came to July. If I had been stronger, better prepared, or even just aware…maybe I could have–”

“Zazie would have still gotten you.” She snapped her head to look at him. “You were perfect today and everything still went to hell.” He rubbed his face. “I was–I mean, I am impressed.”

“You are?”

“And a little turned on. I didn’t think you could look so sexy holding a tiny gun like that.” He wagged his eyebrows at her with a lopsided grin. 

“Ew, Nick!” She punched him and he laughed. 

“No, but seriously, you’ve done good. Druncle would be proud of you.” 

“Druncle, huh,” She chuckled a bit, “speaking of family…Vash is going to need us to get through this. We have to work together.”

Wolfwood turned serious. “I know.”

“Don’t leave me out again.” Her bottom lip jutted slightly.

He looked her over, as if assessing before assuring her, “I won’t.” 

Meryl held out her pinky, “Promise?

Wolfwood wrapped his pinky around hers. “Promise.”

I just wanted to check in case I am somehow accidentally doing something wrong here. I added a bunch of your art to my queue because I just discovered your stuff yesterday and I love it and you might be my new favorite Knives artist. Umm but when I was looking at my queue I noticed that some of the things had a message saying "reblogs are turned off for this post" and I don't know if that means they just won't show up when it's their turn in the queue or if I have accidentally circumvented the system somehow. But if you do not want things reblogged, I can remove from the queue. If that's just tumblr being confused, I can leave them there. Just don't want to be doing something that is not appreciated.
