This will act to amplify the marine conservation achievements of the Pitcairn Island community and the need to protect the biological hotspots of the ocean within large, fully protected reserves. (at Henderson Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3sJG5flwXZ/?igshid=gc33pz0md5ss

Their second crucial goal was to generate beautiful and impactful video and photography content to shine a light on the biological wonder of the Pitcairn Islands archipelago. Specifically, the world renowned 830,000km2 fully protected MPA. (at Henderson Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3sIvRwF6gr/?igshid=mrxnfdywvalo

Jon Slayer @jonslayer and Luke Hosty @googsicreative, the dive-team, had dual objectives. The first was to document and ultimately tell the story of the expedition – it’s goals, challenges and deliverables - via a series of interviews combined with aerial drone, terrestrial and underwater video and still footage. Andrea Vance @avancez is an internationally acclaimed reporter and Iain McGregor @mcgregor1 an award-winning photojournalist. Working together, their goal on the expedition was to comprehensively capture the story of the participants – their goals, the hardship they faced, planned outputs and long-term aspirations tied to the project. They went about their work via a series of interviews, by embedding within teams and by capturing stunning imagery via video, drone and still photography. Ultimately, the produced work will serve to raise awareness about the problem of marine plastic debris. (at Henderson Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3pZ-wSlx5n/?igshid=b1td7yvjioa5

Jennifer Lavers and Alex Bond @least.auklet sought to build on their previous 2015 fieldwork and focused predominantly on seabirds and plastics. Working in collaboration with the beach clean-team, over 500m of high-resolution data was collected on the materials washed up on East Beach using the Tangaroa Blue Foundation methodology. This technique, on East Beach targeting materials which were bottle top sized or bigger, recorded material type (e.g., rope, hard plastic fragments), number, weight, origin and provenance – and allows the team to categorise the materials deposited on Henderson. An inability to land on East Beach with a RIB due to prevailing winds and swell posed a significant problem for the clean-up team (and the expedition in general). It was necessary to cut a path from North Beach and to travel to East Beach over the plateaux each day on foot (over 100km was walked in total). This allowed 11 days to clear the 2.25km East Beach of items which were bottle top sized or bigger (at Henderson Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3kQ_hllqbQ/?igshid=1l8pqkmeprngm

@mandybarkerphotography intention is to create several SOUP style images similar to her previous work, but more importantly create images following a new creative direction specific to Henderson. Having created a unique medium format photography camera made completely from ocean plastics, which is the only one of its kind in the world, which will reflect her working process in parallel with the location of Henderson island itself. During the expedition @mandybarkerphotography worked tirelessly on east beach documenting all the different types of plastic objects recovered, whilst at the same time recording bar codes, text and logos that appeared on the plastic pieces. The overarching objective of this 2019 expedition – driven by the Pitcairn Island community and coordinated by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in collaboration with the Pew Trusts @pewenvironment – was to study the estimated 10 tonnes of pollution on East Beach and the beautiful ecological hotspot on which it is deposited – so to shine a light on the issue of global ocean pollution and on the beauty and draw of the Pitcairn Island Marine Reserve @pitcairnislandstourism (at Pitcairn Islands) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Z6ZdzlAGp/?igshid=1p59xylx64fhk

The 2019 Henderson project was selected to be a formally recognized “expedition” of @the_explorers_club with Flag #97! Only 850 explorers have ever carried a flag and there are only 222 flags – this means that our expedition is on par with famous missions to the Moon and to the depths of the ocean. The Explorers Club is a New York City, USA based international organization that dates back to 1904 with the goal of promoting scientific exploration and field study. On 8th June ( @worldoceansday ) a multidisciplinary team arrived on Henderson Island – one of four islands making up the Pitcairn Archipelago – to undertake a two-week research expedition. Although the 42.7 km2 uninhabited island sits thousands of kilometres from the nearest continental landmass and is part of the Pitcairn Island Marine Reserve – over 830,000km2 of fully protected ocean – a 2017 study by Lavers and Bond found that its East Beach was the most densely polluted beach on the planet. Our Creative Director, Luke was part of the Henderson Expedition earlier this year, so we thought we'd share some of the incredible work that was done, the beauty of the Pitcairn Islands and surrounding MPA and shine a light on the amazing ocean advocates who made up the expedition team. Last year we co-hosted a Protect Blue event with the Plastic Tides team in Bermuda. Our events are a little different from a standard sustainability conference. No presentations, no slide shows, no hand outs. Ocean advocates gather to learn from practical workshops: SUP, swim, hike & explore all the awesomeness nature has to offer. Hang out with like-minded folk, industry leaders & sustainability experts. Play. Learn. Share. (at Planet Earth) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3SGMUelTjX/?igshid=b2826h0yfj1q

@aprilzilg here on day 2 of my Plastic Tides takeover!🐳 I wanted to share some photos with you all showing my race day prep process and how I keep it plastic free! 👌Check out the details below! 🤙 First off I shop for my trip and I make sure I'm using only reusable bags at the grocery store. No single-use plastics here! I use cotton net bags for my 🍓🍊&🥬🌽🥕 and I use small cotton bags for my bulk buys. Buying in bulk is an awesome way to reduce your use of plastic. You bring your cotton bag to the store and then dump your score into your Mason jars at home! 🥗 Eating clean and eating REAL food is super important to me. I made a great salad today to fill up on the good stuff and used veggies from my garden to do it! Gardens are one of the most underrated solutions out there and its awesome having one. I also made my own energy balls for my race tomorrow and kombucha for gut-health! 🚰 I'll be on the road this weekend for the race tomorrow and staying hydrated is absolutely essential. I'll usually fill up a jug to bring on the road with me so I don't have to stop to fill up my #reusable water bottle and so I can avoid any single-use along the way. 🚐 Finally, THE VAN! It been amazing having my van for traveling and actually helped me a ton with plastic-use. I'm able to bring all my needs, water, groceries, etc along with me so I don't have to eat junk food or get any single-use wrapped energy bars. Plus it's really adds to the sense of adventure when you pile all your gear on and start getting looks from everyone on the road! #AdventureEnvy ~ Stay tuned for more updates as race start keeps sneaking closer and closer! #plasticfreeliving #paddleboard #sup #HALROSOFFCLASSIC @newportaquaticcenter https://www.instagram.com/p/BtogZG3AJb_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=spuudydmv5vp
