Spoilers for Season Three

This scene was a top three moment of the season for me as a jackieshauna warrior and also a travjack truther. There are soooooooo many ways to interpret what he said and why he said it. Firstly he was fucking drunk, or tripping on wilderness shrooms. Secondly we know the Travis Shauna beef runs extremely deep (attacking him during the bacchanal, holding a knife to Nat’s throat, butchered Javi and threw it in his face, etcetera). Thirdly they are just diametrically opposed (although thematically similar) and when Travis is in the woods with Akilah and Kodiak, and his veneer cracks, this opposition is very clear. He doesn’t want power, he’s done with the games, he wants to go home, and he knows Shauna is just getting started. Why not hit her where it hurts?

And then I remembered the Pilot. Jackie said the person she loses her virginity to will be linked to her forever. He said he can hear her thoughts and that thus far they’ve been about Shauna. Now, who the fuck knows if he meant literally or if he meant that he just knew about Jackieshauna from Jackie? Maybe he gathered the context from living with them and then having sex with Jackie where she talked about Shauna before and after? Maybe they are connected. In life, in death, in the wilderness and back home. Maybe because they lost their virginities to each other like Jackie said, or maybe they ALL connected with Jackie spiritually when they ate her.

Regardless, Travis was the vessel chosen to show Shauna that the others knew what was going on between them. AND we got this from Jackie POV proxy! Such an interesting way for this narratively rich dynamic to be examined. I’m so happy it came from Travis and in my opinion it was an excellent pay off to his Season One scenes with Jackie.

Oh and by the way, him knowing Jackie’s feelings for Shauna means that he knows her better than anyone. Better than Shauna and Jeff. Which means that both Jackie and the only person who truly knew Jackie are dead.

i love how s3 finale completely flips our perspective on the hunt from the pilot. half of the girls weren’t even hunting. van standing over the pit seemed so menacing in the pilot but now it’s just heartbreaking. mari being pit girl, not because the wilderness chose but because shauna chose. mari was only wearing a nightdress so she could use her clothes as a decoy. and turns out mari was a decoy while the others tried to get rescue. misty removing her mask and smiling not because they caught mari but because they’re getting rescued and there’s nothing shauna can do about it. the hair on the antler queen costume wasn’t a collection of various victims’ hair, it was just mari’s. this whole time we thought it was all the girls collectively giving in to the hunt and the wildness of it, but really it was just shauna, along with lottie and tai. none of them wanted to do a hunt, none of them wanted mari to be chosen.

You guys I just got a terrible feeling that when the Yellowjackets are rescued that Travis is going to go home and his mother won’t be there in a way that leads to his pact with Natalie to never take their own lives.

Like please tell me his mother will be there waiting for him and not a sold, empty house. Tell me his mom didn’t kill herself thinking that Coach Martinez, Javi and Travis were all dead.

Season 3 Spoilers

Yeah circling back to this after the scene of Travis telling Shauna that he can hear Jackie’s thoughts ????? And they are his favorite ?????? And they are about the slumber party makeouts, jealousy and betrayal ??????

So what I’m hearing is Travis The Jackiehauna Truther is still poetically linked to Jackie. A win for the Travis warriors.

TLDR: Jackie and Travis have a lot of narrative similarities and it’s fun to look at that through the lens of Jackie’s quote from the Pilot, “if we’re each others firsts we will be linked forever, it’s more poetic that way.”

I think it’s worth wondering about Jackie’s line “if we’re each others first we’ll be linked forever, it’s more poetic that way” and how we can juxtapose Jackie and Travis since they lost it to each other.

It’s already interesting that to do what she thought was hurting Shauna, Jackie slept with somebody else’s boyfriend. Nat’s boyfriend. Interesting because it gives insight into why exactly Jackie was so hurt. Obviously finding out your best friend has been sleeping with your boyfriend would be Earth shattering for anyone but she turned around and did the same thing to Nat, so clearly the cheating wasn’t really the issue (and yes I think Jackie considered Shauna having sex with Jeff to be Shauna cheating on her, even if you aren’t a jackieshauna truther there is a possessiveness they have about each other that can’t be denied). The issue for Jackie in my opinion is that Shauna had those big life moments and secrets without her. Shauna kept a pregnancy from her. Was having a romantic affair and didn’t tell Jackie. If she wasn’t having the affair with Jeff, I’m sure these are the type of things Jackie and Shauna would have shared with each other. So Jackie in her infinite wisdom assumed that if this revelation hurt her so much, she could likely hurt Shauna by behaving the same way. She hooks up with Travis.

Travis was a virgin. He was anxious about having sex with Nat because she had more experience than him. He let that fear turn him into someone who than vilified Nat for simply having sex with other people prior to him finding out that Nat lied about hooking up with the guy who viciously bullied him back home. Nat simply withheld information that she knew would hurt him, she didn’t backstab him in such an obvious way like Shauna did to Jackie, but ultimately he felt lied to and betrayed.

So they hook up and she literally dies the next day. Very 1970s horror film of her. The both of them have the two worst nights of their lives, for Jackie the last worst nights of her life and for Travis it was only the beginning. Jackie was of course doomed by the plot and she set off a chain of events that leads to the Antler Queen and Travis dying 25 years later. I’ve seen before someone mention that the Wilderness didn’t give the survivors anything for Travis’ death. Maybe it’s because the Wilderness didn’t demand it, he effectively did just kill himself. No one drew a card, there was no hunt, and he died. The same happened with Jackie. There was no hunt, no cards, she had the situationship ending fight with Shauna and goes outside and freezes during the night. I’ve also seen people interpret her death as a suicide. Where they contrast is that Jackie at that point had no will to live, and Travis did. I can’t exactly remember what Lottie said he was hoping to say to the Wilderness when he brought it back by walking the line of life and death, or if she even said, but I can imagine he wanted atonement. Or maybe just wanted to prove a point. That feels a lot like what Jackie wanted when she lost her virginity to Travis.

I wonder if he thought of her during that experience? If he saw the connection between that first hunt he was supposed to be the victim of the night he lost his virginity to Jackie, and then her being cast out and dying the next night, and then the hunt Nat was supposed to be the victim of but the “Wilderness” taking Javi instead. Jackie was not part of the hunt for Travis, she was not part of the “Wilderness”. So she died. Travis lost a lot during the course of his time out there. He lost his dad, his brother, his mind, and then he comes back home and after 25 years he dies for the Wilderness but not at the hands of the Wilderness. The Wilderness basically took out Travis’ whole bloodline and he was doomed from the start. His mother wanted the boys to go with their father to Nationals, he otherwise would not have been there but Jackie was always there. We wouldn’t have a show without her. It’s all so tragic and human and interesting to think of Travis and Jackie as being just as bound together as any of the other survivors/victims were. Even if their friendship/relationship/whatever began and ended with them having sex. They were bound together, just like Jackie said when she thought she was talking about Jeff. It’s even more interesting to look at the inverse and compare and contrast Nat and Shauna. The way Jackie dying directly leads to Nat eventually pulling the Queen, and then Travis dying which indirectly leads to Shauna pulling the Queen. Nat is a clear leader and contender for Antler Queen and judging from the trailers we’ve seen for season 3, Shauna might be initiating a power struggle to overthrow Nat’s leadership so Shauna could be Antler Queen after all. Now with Nat’s death and Shauna’s drawing of the Queen maybe they will be bound in death too.

Well the season is over and I’m left with one big question: how well did Shauna know Natalie pre crash?

I gather not well at all because anyone who knew what was going on at home for my good sis Nat couldn’t SERIOUSLY believe that she would resign herself to life under an abusive regime.

Like yes they are all teenagers and are all very much going through something pre crash, but we saw (potentially tweenage) Nat go head to head with her abuser and come out the other side. She got tougher, smarter, and stronger but she was still kind and full of love to give. OF COURSE she wasn’t going to just sit back while Shaudam Hussein viciously bullied everyone in sight. That girl was stomping around, throwing things, lashing out - using all sorts of violence to get her way. The past few months under Shauria Law was probably so triggering for Nat AND VAN.

OF COURSE Nat was going to go forth and fight like hell, try over and over, and get tougher, get smarter. Of course she was able to out wit and out maneuver Shauna and lead without using brute force. Like duh? She wants it more. She wants everyone to go home. And Shauna represents a vicious cycle of abuse that could keep them all in danger in perpetuity. My good sis Nat has seen these rooms, she’s walked these halls. She wants to get the fuck OUT.

Like does Shauna not know Natalie at all?????? I know she was suspicious but damn. Maybe if she wasn’t such an extemporaneous thinker she would’ve used the clues of Nat’s past to realize she was picking on the wrooooooong bitch. Unless she truly knows nothing about her (which would also make sense, since Natalie isn’t Jackie).

I rewatched the Pilot the other day and something that strikes me as so insane is the scene where Shauna and Jackie ride to school in Shauna’s car. Before she even leaves Jackie’s block the scene is crazy. Shauna is journaling and listening to Supernova by Liz Phair and it’s a love song (or a lust song) and she looks up to see Jeff sneaking out of the window. She makes eye contact with him and shoots him a look of what I can only describe as disgust. Then Jackie comes out of her house and Shauna makes her signature large-optimistic-doe-eye-face and the music is clear;

“Your kisses are as wicked as an M-16. And you fuck like a volcano. And you're everything to me.”

I still am not sure what to make of this. On my first watch I decided to interpret this as a jackieshauna scene but it could be possible that Shauna was being smug in the privacy of her car, journaling about Jeff and listening to the song while thinking about him… scary.

Then Jackie changes to the radio and the song Informer by Snow is playing. Snow wrote the song for while he was in jail facing charges for attempted murder which is… something. And also, he was accused of STABBING THE VICTIMS. That is soooooo Shauna. She then gives Jackie shit for Jeff being there and is like, “what happened to focusing on nationals” and “I thought you were going to rip off the bandaid.” Which leads to the most insane conversation where Jackie talks about how important it is for her and Jeff to have that experience together and Shauna just sits there and listens. And my question is… did Shauna think they were having sex and Jackie just didn’t tell her? Would Shauna have let Jackie have sex with Jeff, knowing that she wasn’t that into him? Was that the point? For them to eventually both be having sex with Jeff?

Such an enriching and uniquely not embarrassing section of U.S. history and it’s appalling that the current administration successfully aimed to erase literal war heroes.

I am not a war monger, I firmly stand against the invasion of Iraq, the Vietnam War, suppression of leftist movements in Latin America, the displacement/genocide of Indigenous Peoples, the drone strikes, the prolonged occupation of Afghanistan, and basically every other thing related to the War on Terror. However, to seek to erase Black People from their participation in WW2 and their success in defeating fascism is… just an insane hill to die on. The current administration has a strong record of disgracing war heroes and therefore diminishing their efforts and successes. He spoke on John McCain, who of course was not the perfect politician but without a doubt experienced hell during his time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He now scoffs at and tries to erase the fact that Black People were present for some of the more successful chapters of the U.S. military.

Now let’s ask ourselves why. Is it because of his history of anti black racism? Maybe. Is it because he has a track record of disrespecting the military (including draft dodging)? Probably. But I also think it’s because Donald Trump’s administration doesn’t want people to remember that ANYONE CAN DEFEAT FASCISTS. THERE ARE NO LIMITATIONS TO WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE IF WE ALL BEAR DOWN AND WORK TOGETHER. OUR ANCESTORS STOOD UP TO FASCISM AND TRIUMPHED.

WE CAN TRIUMPH AGAINST FASCISM TOO, IF WE MIND OUR HISTORY AND PAY RESPECT TO THOSE WHO STOOD UP.

One important point to understand re: the Tuskegee Airmen:

Nowadays air travel is taken for granted, so it's an important point to remember that the first powered flight was done by the Wright Brothers in 1903. A mere 40 years later aviation in war had become the business it was in the Second World War and has been since, and that is an astonishingly short span of time. For people of that era the idea of war in the air was still new and given all manner of exaggerated expectations and associated with the same futuristic elements that today's drone wars are. That meant that Black aviators, even in a segregated unit, captured that same futuristic element. By a further irony the major Black units in the European war fought in the Italian Campaign, the closest the Anglo-American War truly came to the reality of the Axis-Soviet War with all the morbid horrors of war and none of the rare elements of beauty war can create in individual moments.

As such Italy would be largely forgettable and forgotten in US historiography....except, in a rare turn of events, the Black air unit that serves as the main remembrance there was an Italian campaign at all.
