she let out a laugh as she pulls bill into the plaza kitchen. they’re alone in the room, something that they’re not supposed to do, but no one is going to yell at the boss’s daughter ( even if she is twenty-three and knows better ). she starts to pull out the ingredients to make christmas cookies, one of her favorite past times and something she had always longed to do with bill.

❝ so. are we going to make snowmen or stockings?❞

     he can’t help thinking how like old times this is:  her hauling him ‘round the plaza, his shoes sliding on marble floors and skidding into tables and trays, and the both of them laughing all the while.  still the ‘little hellion’ she’d always been, it seems.   ❝ both!  you grab the pans.  i’ll get the icing and sprinkles. ❞   

missing christmas in vermont this year, he’d missed out on baking cookies with his family:  something the mills family always did in overabundance.  and whatever mom had left over from the guests at the ski lodge where she worked, she’d bring home, too.  basically, there’s never a shortage of sweets at the mills house at christmastime.

she doesn’t say anything at first, she doesn’t know how to say the words she needs to. rachel knows that bill has picked up on the fact that she wasn’t at home today. she’s across an ocean at oxford, her father sent her away after discovering how serious their relationship was.

❝ i have some news.❞ she still doesn’t want to tell him, she doesn’t want to break his heart ( or her own ). bill was her best friend, her true love, her EVERYTHING. she can’t stand the idea that they’re over.

     ❝ where are you?  what’s going on? ❞   prunella had relished telling him ‘miss peabody’ had moved away from the plaza, but no one had  —  or could  —  tell him where she’d moved to.   ❝ did something happen? ❞   he slowly shifts atop his bed, cradling and gripping the phone as a lifeline.  he tries to tell himself to stay hopeful.  maybe she’s just upstate.  maybe prunella lied about her moving just to upset him  —  she’s always been mad at him for not ‘knowing his place’ with the owner’s daughter. 

but there are more parts of him that aren’t quite hopeful as to what this bodes for them.
