Stephen posted a video to Instagram: I visited Painshill Park for the first time yesterday, having been on a site visit in nearby Weybridge where we’re creating a cottage garden.⠀ ⠀ My time was shorter than I had originally expected, and the walled kitchen garden was of course closed due to Covid-19, but despite that and the heat, I has a lovely walk round (much of) the Historic Route. This was laid out as a circuit walk for visitors when the gardens were created by Charles Hamilton in the 18th century. ⠀ ⠀ Painshill is one of the later English Landscape Gardens and Hamilton’s design with ‘follies’, or garden structures, and his inclusion of interesting plants is a delight. ⠀ ⠀ The vineyard was originally planted in the 1740s, and I was disappointed – but not surprised! – that their well known sparkling wine was sold out. I consoled myself with a bottle of kitchen garden gin ⠀ 😉 🍸⠀ I’ll share some more of the short videos I took, so you too can be tempted to visit. Organic and largely traditional practises with a 21st century twist (thanks to science!)⠀ 🥕⠀ The carrots are growing in a container as the soil in this garden is heavy clay and not easy to grow carrots in. Luckily they’re happy growing in a container.
