How To Change A Bathroom Tap Like A Plumber
The purchase of a new bathroom faucet (or even a set of taps for the bathroom) could breathe fresh air into a tired bathroom. If you're looking for something classic, like the basin taps with a crosshead, or you're looking to go for a sleek, minimalist design using a mono basin waterfall mixer, it's a simple job to change the faucet in your bathroom.
To make life simpler for our readers, we've put together an easy and quick guide for replacing the old faucets in your bathroom. For starters, you'll require these items: Screwdriver
Tap of PFTE
A wrench that can be adjusted
Basin spanner
Junior hacksaw
Connector for tap pipe(s)
Pipe cutter tool
Loosening the tap
You'll have to turn off the main supply of water from the water tap in the first place. Once this is completed, it's best to place the plug into the basin to avoid the bolts and fixings falling into the drain and creating any other issues.
It's sometimes recommended to use a knife to take off any sealant lingering around the tap's base to make it less difficult to get rid of, but be sure not to harm the basin's surface by doing this.
Unscrewing the bolt beneath the basin
Then, you'll need to remove the nut that secures the faucet onto the basin. It's located at the bottom of the basin. This is often difficult when you don't have much space to play around, this might cause damage to basin or sink, if such thing happen then read this blog on How To Repair A Sink That Is Chipped Or Damaged, so you must use a cranking basin spanner that loosens the nuts.
If you're taking off an old tap, the connection may be damaged or rusty. If that's the case, you can use an apron-sized hacksaw to cut the stem or nut on the faucet.
Examining connections to the taps
Unless the tap you've bought will be directly onto the pipe, you'll need to connect it with the tap connector. Most modern faucets for bath and basins will have flexible tails (usually braided or corrugated pipe that has threaded tap
connectors at the one side and a compression fitting at the other) for making the installation easy. If needed, make use of a pipe cutter to cut the ends of the pipe and make it in preparation for the fitting.
Connecting the new tap
Connect the tap connector by hand to the other end of the new tap. Then, tighten the fitting gently using the adjustable wrench. The faucet parts are as straight as you can during this process to prevent injury to the tap fitting or the baseplate the tap is set upon.
Connecting the connector to the pipe
Once the pipework is connected, attach the pipe to the other end of flexible tails by using the compression fitting. Sometimes, before fitting it, many plumbers prefer to put some plumbers tape (PTFE tape) over the connection to form a waterproof seal.
You will find it at any local plumbers shop or DIY store. Press the cap nut down before an olive (the internal ring that forms part of the fitting for tap compression). Then, push the joint to ensure that the pipe's end meets the stop within the joint.
Ensuring that the nut is tight under the basin
To hold everything in the right place, manually tighten the main nut on the fitter. After it is securely fixed, you can use a spanner to secure the fitting, then turn the nut in one complete turn using another spanner.
Repeat as many times as needed to secure the entire fitting securely in its place. After this then recheck all joints and fittings. Then, switch off the water supply and look for leaks or drips. If they are present, you'll need to tighten the joints in question.
