wow it's really crazy and super surprising that the first piece of new apparently canon sge material is actually very disappointing and terrible and i am shocked by this turn of events

i think i would have been able to get over the idea of modern music in the sge soundtrack if all the music choices had been as inspired as tedros' entrance instead of toxic during the battle at the end

i just think it’s funny that we’re going to skip back into 2013 discourse since no movie fans read up to tlea and know the truth 😭
i am sort of of the opinion that making them sisters WAS queerbaiting but like. i know their sisters. agaphie is NOT real

BACK ON OUR BULLSHIT!
an excerpt from a review of the sge movie by the publication The Guardian:
"[W]hy is this film under the impression that its leads, an inseparable femme-tomboy pairing who share true love’s kiss right on the mouth in a climactic moment, are mutually platonic galpals? They’re queer-coded so hard that it’s nearly textual, and yet these characters are denied themselves like it’s 1961 and they need their parents to believe they’re roommates."
if i were soman chainani i'd probably be shitting my pants right about now

half the dialogue could have been replaced with word for word book scenes and the movie would have been WAYYYY funnier. just saying
the biggest loss of the sge movie was not having the circus of talents. not because we didn’t get to see “good character moments” and “cool and insane fight scenes” but because we didn’t get to hear THIS iconic exchange happen afterwards:

I'm not an expert on the books, I've only read the first one, but I'm really sad they removed all the blue forest lessons where Tedros kept choosing Agatha, thinking it was Sophie etc. Like that was big part of the book that I really liked and was excited to see on screen :/ same goes for the whole trial by tale
TAGGING THIS AS MOVIE SPOILERS
like i've said before i can definitely understand being upset about some scenes being removed; obviously there are scenes removed that i think would have been really fun to see (lunchtime lectures, the "i've been beautiful all along" scene, more room 66 bonding) but i can understand it being removed so that pace of the movie didn't suffer. honestly i think it suffered anyway, so it didn't matter much, but even with all the stuff they included the movie was WAY too long. harry potter type beat (and that is the ONLY time i will ever compare sge to harry potter) (glaring)

more sge thoughts (this is gonna be an all-day thing i think)
SPOILERS AHEAD AGAIN SORRY
one of the weird things about the sge movie imo is that sophie isn't really Evil. like she's not.
any bad deed sophie does in the beginning of the movie is either directly in defense of agatha or an expression of frustration as a result of her poor circumstances (which DO exist in this movie, honora is a bitch and stefan is basically nonexistent). so... why is she in Evil
to be quite honest, the vanity and bitch factor of the evergirls are MUCH worse than sophie's up until her little parade of insults in room 66. how can you justify classifying sophie as evil but beatrix and reena and millicent as good?
i understand this is an issue more perpetuated by the fact that we don't really have access to the inner monologue of a character beyond the narration of the storian, but even that doesn't reveal any secret "super-Evil side" of sophie's personality. her dream about the ball in the first few scenes of the movie displays her vanity, sure, but again! it's not worse than the evergirls!
at least sophie defends agatha and treats her kindly for the beginning of the movie. it's a shocking disparity between the book and the movie: in the movie, you could probably justify sophie being truly good or at least fair neutral. her switch to evil in the second act seems almost completely out of character considering the fact that she was only a real bitch when provoked. she had to be poked and prodded into anything even resembling her book self the whole way through. is that really evil?
just some more thoughts

Can you do a quick spoiler free review? I can’t watch the movie till Friday lol
i'll compile a bunch of my spoiler-free parts of the review because i am currently in ap lit but i don't want to leave you hanging
i think fans are going to be both excited and disappointed by the movie because on one hand, favorite characters! some favorite scenes! on the other hand, it's just not an awesome movie lmfao
plot decisions made to retrofit the story for a script ended up weakening the overall quality of the movie, and i think the characterization of some characters in the script was inaccurate in a very distracting way that also ended up weakening the performance of whatever actor was playing the role
the general audience is going to feel VERY queerbaited (basically a return to fandom circa 2013-2015) and i've already seen some of that sentiment, specifically in a review from the guardian
i LOVED seeing the practical effects especially during some prominent action scenes, but i think the amount of cgi they ended up using anyway was disappointing considering it's what most reviews have been mentioning even though paul said he was trying his damndest to avoid it
despite all this i do think the main young cast (sophie, agatha, tedros, beatrix, hort) did the best with what they were given and i liked seeing them a LOT
i also still think the physical set design and costumes were GORGEOUS. some scenes are really very beautiful, and the cgi isn't always bad (the stymphs are mostly passable, and i think the wish fish scene turned out really beautiful)
overall, very mixed feelings
