the biggest loss of the sge movie was not having the circus of talents. not because we didn’t get to see “good character moments” and “cool and insane fight scenes” but because we didn’t get to hear THIS iconic exchange happen afterwards:

I am so sick of people guilt tripping lesbians when we that say we feel queer baited by Sophie and Agatha. Aside from them already being heavily queer coded as individuals (I already made a separate post about that) -- they fucking kissed in the movie. On the lips, might i add. Before y’all start coming to me with the whole bs that is, ‘oh no it was supposed to be platonic!!’ and ‘kissing doesn’t have to romantic!!’.
I KNOW that. But let’s be real for a second. They kissed (on the lips) in a climactic moment, revealing that they were each other’s true love. If this had been a guy and a girl -- y’all would have never implied that shit was platonic. Hell, even if it was two guys!! That’s not how friends act!
I feel like this is adding to the whole rhetoric that ‘Lesbian relationships are not serious’ and ‘oh they’re just really good friends’.
We were queer-baited. I don’t care who you ship. I don’t care that Soman himself is queer. This film is reaching a wider audience and can potentially add to the negative representations of sapphics in media.
Stop guilt tripping us. We deserve to be upset. And hopefully, we can influence the writers to retcon that stupid sisters twist. This doesn’t mean that agaphie has to be endgame (tagatha can still be) -- but i’d at least like an explicit confirmation for a little while.

So. I just watched the school for good and evil movie. As someone who has been a fan of the book series for nearly ten years, here are my thoughts on it:
Pros:
Agatha and Sophie have great chemistry, as do Agatha and Tedros. Sophie and Tedros... Don't! Which is also good!
Lady lesso and Dovey are amazing. 10/10 casting
I actually liked most of the changes to the plot. The second book was never my favorite so I'm sort of glad they skipped over it and completely omitted the Sophie/Tedros. In the movie it's clear Sophie was never really into him besides the idea of him as a prince.
In the same vein, I liked how they changed Rafal. I never liked him very much as a character and making him a whole ass creepy adult instead of a blonde twilight-esque immortal teen was for the better.
The soundtrack and costuming was so campy. I love it. Got Jumpscared by the Eurovision song at the end though
Hort was perfect in every way. He's such a loser I want to study him under a microscope
Cons:
Really could have used more world building. I get it, it's a movie and there's only so much things you can fit into two and a half hours (in fact I'm a bit impressed they fit as much as they did in) but a lot of the charm of the books is from the world outside of the school and the magic system! It's what separates it from stuff like ever after high or Disney's descendants.
The actress they cast for Agatha, while perfect for the role in every other way, was simply not ugly. She could not sell me on her otherness. Visually she fit right in with all the other princesses at the good school.
While I loved a lot about Lesso and Dovey, I don't like that their friendship was removed. They're my Baby's First Lesbian Ship and I love their dynamic in the books, which the movie didn't even try to match.
If I'm remembering the books correctly, it seems like they gave Agatha's mom's backstory to Lesso instead. Bit of an odd choice, but it gives me hope for the retconning of the sisters thing. Speaking of...
The sisters thing
Yes, they're sisters in the books. Disappointing, I know. I've been reading posts of people experiencing what I like to call "sister reveal syndrome" all day.
I've seen a lot of people complain about the movie being queerbaiting. I totally understand where they're coming from. The movie didn't delve into the whole romance vs friendship plotline that the books had, which makes the true love's kiss at the end really seem like it was meant to be romantic.
In the books, one of the biggest themes is that platonic or familial love is just as important, if not more so, than romantic love. My personal feelings about it aside, the kiss at the end of the book made sense and was clearly not intended as romantic. The movie just didn't hit the same mark so it's completely understandable that people would be disappointed in Agatha and Sophie's relationship.
But like I mentioned earlier, it really does seem like the movies are planning on retconning the sisters plotline. Due to the casting Agatha doesn't look a lot like Sophie's dad or her mom (unless when Sophie's mom turned herself prettier for stephen she also... No, they wouldn't.) And they implied Lesso fills the role Agatha's mom is meant to. And no mention was made of Galvadon being related to the fairy tale world in any way.
Overall, I did enjoy the movie a lot. It isn't like the books, but I don't think that's a bad thing.

so. i watched the sge movie and obviously I was very curious to see how they wrote hort as a hort fan aaand. what did they do to him??? i knew about them changing his entire backstory before and I was pretty angry about it lol but this was even worse than I expected? like why would you do that.
so he’s captain hook’s son now? the captain hook who is a very famous villain in the endless woods? the one who would probably be very rich? so that means that hort is not from a poor underprivileged background now. he’s the son of one of the most influential nevers in their world? that goes directly against who hort and his family were in the books :/ once again hort is a very poor boy, he can’t even afford to bury his father. his dead father who has to wait Years before being buried. that’s like his whole goal in the first two books, to buy his dad a coffin!!
that’s such an important and emotional aspect of his character and this movie just doesn’t care about any of that. he doesn’t even talk that much about his father? like I get (i still don’t) if they tried to make a new arc for him?? but no. they just made him a shallow character with no depth. why even change his backstory if you aren’t gonna do anything about it. i understand they didn’t have enough time but they could still throw in some lines here and there that would tell us about his relationship with his dad and the struggles that he faces :/ but in the movie it doesn’t even look like he had any problems and doesn’t seem to care about his father that much? which is so wrong man :/
on a more positive note, I did love earl’s portrayal of hort in the movie. i think he really gets him well and manages to show his awkwardness and weirdness while also making him fun and sweet. unfortunately, though I was very disappointed by the script so even earl’s acting didn’t make up for all of it for me personally. because again hort acted in character but lacked all the things that made him so interesting to begin with

i think the thing about the movie is that it has no balls. the writers are deathly afraid of writing characters to be unlikable like dude!! these are freaks! i know some less favory things got removed for being outdated or time and that's fine but the characters don't have the same pizzazz. agatha lights a bird heads on fire and eats a fairy tedros kicks a rabbit and draws his sword at the slightest challenge beatrix tackles agatha sophie steals horts pajamas and locks her best friend in a glass coffin and her and agatha wrestle as trolls and that's barely the best of it. they're unapologetically freaks and that makes them charming and likable. make them weird! make them (i hate using this word) quirky! Make the stakes high and make the characters further it

MOVIE SPOILERS! Dangerous spoilers under the cut
Some of my thoughts!! Not many of them are coherent yet I’ll be honest but I needed to post something so. Here we are
- not sure if Rafal’s speech about sabotaging Good by rewarding them for killing and torturing villains was in the books but I thought that was a really smart angle to take it - Rafal actually undermining Good for years made the whole vain performative Goodness of the School for Good a lot more sinister and I liked it
- Dovesso should’ve kissed. For the betterment of humanity.
- Dammit I didn’t want to like anything about Hort but “hi :)” “my heart belongs to another 😔” was really funny I did laugh
- Making the gargoyle from the book GREGOR!! That hurt me
- Love all the little hints at Tedros’s raging abandonment issues. He really did just latch on to any woman who didn’t immediately show interest in him. Him hanging around Agatha constantly AFTER she punched him in the face was very funny to me. Look at him try to function. Can’t wait to see the sequel where all that goes to shit. :)
- His line at the end also tickled me. “I NEED YOU AGATHA :(((((((“
- Him and Hester should bond over mother issues
- KIKO!! the bit where Beatrix pushed her away and she was like :( and then Dovey touched her arm and she went :D she’s so beautiful I love
- Kerry Washington understood the assignment. Unhinged Dovey for the win
- “Do I look like I give a SHIT about smiling??!?!!!” was the best line in that whole movie no contest if only one character got to swear then I am so glad it was Anemone
- Not so keen on Sophie’s nose growing bigger = Evil. there are other ways to portray stereotypical fairytale villainy that aren’t as harmful
- Hester and Beatrix had some chemistry though. Emo Beatrix was also stunning
- Lady Lesso constantly with every move solidifying my conviction that yeah I am definitely not straight
- Not sure how smart the Leonora of Gavaldon twist actually was but it made me feel smart so
- Tedros’s giggle after Agatha called him bigheaded!!!!!!!!!!
That’s all I have time for for now I am running very late anyway

The school for good and evil movie... I like it a lot actually, after waiting for 7 years for a movie, i liked it. It was not the worst movie adaptation out there but it was......hmmm.
From what i remember of the books(i did read them several years ago so-) there was a lot wrong with the movie.
1: The school master is NOT supposed to be seen by his students and he doesn't leave his tower unlike in the movie where he pretty much freely presents himself. Rafal also wears a mask to hide who he is from everyone???? which he just didnt do in the movie for some reason???
2: They butchered the trial by tail........ like wtf was that scene?? From my memory, it was supposed to be the girls school against the boys school, and it was EVERYONE. And in the trail by tail, Aric is supposed to be there, he's so important to the later story and he's just?? not in the movie for some reason, they just didnt introduce him to the story which i really dont get.
3: They changed Sophie's character, she isnt supposed to be ACTUAL friends with Agatha, she isnt as nice as she is in the movie, she's literally only being nice to Agatha so that she gets into the school for good but she actually thinks Agatha is a freak, and that was throw out of the window for the movie.
4: why the fuck is gerard way hort
5: The school for evil just.....doesnt exist in Gavaldon? Even though in the books its a BIG thing, the readers know about it, kids STRIVE to get in there, that's why Sophie befriended Agatha in the first place because of SGE, but in the movie they're like what? Different universes? worlds? Like wtf was that? 6: They skipped so SO SO MUCH and crammed three books into one two hour long movie and it felt like...awkward. Dont get me wrong, i liked the movie i think all the actors did an amazing job with what they were given but....it just felt weird having read all the books, it felt like so much was left out, so much development, so much plot, a lot was missing from it.
7: Why did Agatha and Tedros like each other so easily???? It took them a while to like each other from what i remember. There was no development of chemistry between them like in the books when Tedros choses Agatha in the glass coffins. Or the stuff in the trial by tale.
8: This is just a personal thing but it really bothered me how it showed what happened between Rafal and his brother RIGHT away, it took a while to learn about that stuff in the books and it just threw it at us so fast, that's just a personal bother though.
In all i think it's a REALLY good movie, i personally like it a lot i just wish they had done things differently and added Aric in there because if they plan on making more movies and, i assume base them off the books, he's kinda vital to the later story especially in ACOT and OTK (probably QFG too but i dont remember that book too much it was my least favorite in the series) If i think of more things that i had issues with i'll probably make another post but thats all i could think of rn.
EDIT : ANOTHER THING I JUST REMEMBERED. it's kinda important for Tristan to die, especially if they plan on continuing down the line of books because if they're going to introduce William into the book, one of his big traits is hating Tedros for how he treated Tristan and he blames Tedros for Tristan dying which didnt happen in the trial by tale so idk how they plan on having Tristan die or if they're even going to bring Will in (which i'd be pretty mad if they didnt put William in the series cause he's like one of the only characters that gives any type of representation in the series cause yk... him and Bogden are gay)

Sofia Wylie appreciation post because dang did she slay in that movie. Like I’ve seen her in HSMTMTS before and she was great in that but she was so in her element in the SGE movie. Like line delivery? Flawless. Agatha’s inner conflict? She absolutely nailed it. I feel like Agatha is such a complicated character to play because a lot of her is inside, if that makes sense and Sofia just carries it off so well. All of the emotional scenes like the fight, or her and the wish fish she were just so good, and it was genuinely such a pleasure to watch.

SGE spoilers below, I have a lot more thoughts about this movie than I thought I would. TLDR; I liked some things but some rewriting choices I wasn’t a fan of and it should’ve been a show.
Note: I have recently just read the first two books and am working through the rest of the series.
The first change I really was not a fan of was the fact that no one in Gavaldon seemed to know about the school? That was literally the one thing I found really interesting in the first part of the book. Having the missing children appear in books? Incredible. Having the villagers worry who the next one will be? Awesome.
It also informs so much of Sophie’s character. Every ‘good’ thing she did was an effort to be put into the School for Good. So when she gets put in Evil it makes much more sense as to why she was so devastated. In the movie, I find it hard to believe that she would care that much about something she just learned about.
Everyone was great in their roles, they were clearly having fun imo. Sophie, Agatha, Dovey, and Lesso were all standouts.
The lack of Room 66 shenanigans was disappointing, I mean they were so much fun, I cannot believe they cut so much.
I was absolutely obsessed with all of Hort’s outfits.
I hated the Doom Room change, that was so important in showing Sophie’s evil (also the Golden Goose)
I still love the the wishing fish, they did that scene justice. Plus the killing of my boy Gregor was a gut punch for me.
I do not miss the F on the outfits. Sorry, I found that super dumb in the books.
More so not showing that Agatha was literally the reason Sophie didn’t fail was a sad change.
What the hell was going on with the School Master? Like why was he just hanging out?
I miss the enemies to lovers of Tedros and Agatha. I thought their romance in the book was super rushed and thought that the movie could do better. While I appreciate that they did have some more development, it still felt hollow.
The nemesis stuff wasn’t treated like it was in the books. It was important and interesting, I wish they took more time with that.
Sophie and Tedros was non-existent, like that was the whole reason Sophie and Agatha had a falling out.
I appreciate the lack of flip flopping. The two schools constantly went from tolerating each other to hating each other. It was super annoying to me in the book so I’m glad that changed.
Circus of Talents. Need I say more?
Also not revealing the wolves and fairies? No Castor and Pollux? what.
The final battle actually was pretty cool, between the two schools and the Master. The cover of ‘Toxic’? Great choice no notes.
The outfits and designs were amazing, I’m kind of glad they got rid of the candy thing.
Aren’t they not supposed to be able to use their magic in Gavaldon? Or did I read the first half of the second book incorrectly?
I think that’s everything for me. Overall, I’m disappointed with how they handled Sophie and Agatha’s characters but it was still a fun time. I just wish it was a ten episode season.
I hope they get the sequel, the second book is so much fun.

EESHA how do you think about the school for good and evil movie........... their arcs were like watered down but the outfits slayed methinks
YOURE SO RIGHT i like just finished it get ready for my jumble of thoughts 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
WHAT I LIKED:
outfits were quite literally SOOOOO GOOODDDDD im obsessed with all of them <3 all the designs truly like set design, effects, all of it GREAT
acting 100% i mean expected bc of the extremely talented and experienced cast we had
soundtrack in my humble opinion was great the instrumental scores???? wonderful and even like the modern music fit for the scene i think…brutal by olivia rodrigo and toxic by brittany spears always hits it doesn’t matter so yeah <3
gregor was sweet i know he was simply there to be a replacement in the wish fish scene for the gargoyle in the book but he made me smile so
tagatha MWAH MWAH i love tedros is so silly so stupid with poor timing and family issues i love him and he and agatha were so WAHH i enjoyed how tedros was enamored with her at their first meeting and i giggled at every scene they had so yeah <3
WHAT I…WELL UM:
the plot was kind of iffy :/
i’m sorry i’m like kind of forgiving bc it felt made for a stand alone movie but that cliffhanger for a sequel was ????? bc they got rid of like all the plot for the second one to happen like that rafal blood magic thing was unnecessary, why was the school master so involved?? he shouldn’t have been?? it shouldn’t even be that he was “good” he literally never does anything for the school so all the staff assumes he’s good, gavaldon not being aware of the school was i mean fine like it didn’t affect the plot in any way so and lady lesso being a reader was actually interesting to me !
WHERE WAS MY CIRCUS OF TALENTS THATS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS IM SO SAD IT WASNT THERE, uh the trial by tale being just for sophie and tedros was uh. a choice ig??, surviving the forest class not being combined was heartbreaking to me even though it didn’t harm anything and the failing thing was weird agatha never fails and sophia fails ONCE which leads to her makeover and tedros falling but the love potion plot (and the EXTREMELY WEIRD fox scene) leaving was great and i can adjust, i do wish we had more scenes proving that agatha was tedros’s true love me personally i think that scene where they both get turned into goblins and then start fighting would have been hilarious, the 100% good agatha and 100% evil sophie was missed but we got “ppl are complex and nothing is black and white” narrative from agatha which i loved so
the wish fish was SOO annoying im sorry bc it’s not that agatha wished for that fishie to go home it’s that she granted the wish fish’s wish to go home!! bc her power is granting wishes!!!! and then it DEVOLVES into chaos but on the other hand that right hook agatha delivers tedros was SOOOGOOD, lady lesso being into rafal was so stupid like be fucking serious..that just made me mad, lady lesso just hating good was weird it’s very clear in the book whole she doesn’t LIKE good she believe its necessary for balance
yeah character arcs were definitely watered down which is :/ but movie adaptations are always like that something’s gotta give, no but like they HAVE agatha’s mirror scene im upset they didn’t include her whole beauty thing in the movie but on the other hand sophia plays agatha so well even without her crippling hatred for beauty, princess anemone being michelle yeoh was everything to me especially how she was given the curse word in this pg-13 movie, um im sure there’s more but i can’t remember anything else OH YEAH WHERE IS PRINCESS UMA AND PROFESSOR SADER?? NOT ONLY R THEY WERE THEY NECESSARY FOR THE ABSENT CHARACTER ARCS WE GOT BUT THEYRE ALSO NECESSARY FOR THE FUTURE SEQUELS WE MAY OR MAY NOT BE GETTING???? anyway that’s it thank u and good night 🫶🏽

I'm not an expert on the books, I've only read the first one, but I'm really sad they removed all the blue forest lessons where Tedros kept choosing Agatha, thinking it was Sophie etc. Like that was big part of the book that I really liked and was excited to see on screen :/ same goes for the whole trial by tale
TAGGING THIS AS MOVIE SPOILERS
like i've said before i can definitely understand being upset about some scenes being removed; obviously there are scenes removed that i think would have been really fun to see (lunchtime lectures, the "i've been beautiful all along" scene, more room 66 bonding) but i can understand it being removed so that pace of the movie didn't suffer. honestly i think it suffered anyway, so it didn't matter much, but even with all the stuff they included the movie was WAY too long. harry potter type beat (and that is the ONLY time i will ever compare sge to harry potter) (glaring)

The SGE Movie —> Racism, anti-Semitism and More.
^^^
Holy fuck there is so much shit to unpack here it’s not even funny.
Okay, starting with the casting.
Will you guys shut the FUCK up about Agatha being Black. Sofia Wylie’s beginning to see the comments and she even had to make a statement about it. I understand people’s concern over Agatha’s self-image issues being cut out and how, visually speaking, she seamlessly fits in with the Evers. Yes, that part is frustrating — I wish the directors had made more of an effort to make Agatha stand out — perhaps being too masculine, too goth, too scruffy, or etc.
So many of you guys say that the solution to this, to Agatha’s ‘ugly’ arc was too cast a white actress. First of, all those fancasts y’all are choosing are fucking models — so no, the problem is not Sofia Wylie being too pretty, it’s about her being Black.
Second of all, if a non-conventionally attractive woman of colour had been cast as Agatha, I just KNOW there would have been even more racist backlash. Like, idk know what kind of world y’all are living in… but u do realise being white is a big part of the beauty standard? So many women of colour feel ugly just coz they are woc and surrounded by skinny white girls. (btw this is not me saying that white people can’t have self image issues — they def can — but with woc it is more of a racist systemic issue).
Again, just to reiterate, the directors/crew could have made more of an effort to make Agatha stand out, visually and personality wise — like they did when she was in Gavaldon. However, they were too busy making sure that Agatha looked like the pure embodiment of beauty and femininity in every shot, so a lot of that story arc was sacrificed. BUT, as unfortunate as that decision was, it was not because Agatha was Black. Far from it, actually.
Before I move on to the anti-Semitism, I just wanna talk about Anadil’s casting briefly. Would have I preferred for her to be cast by an Albino actress? Absolutely. Albino actors deserve more representation. Look, the casting directors did try, they set out a casting call for teenage actresses with albinism but couldn’t find any. Perhaps an argument could be made that they could have tried harder, which is fair. However, most of the people I see complaining about Anadil’s casting, fancast a white, non-albino actress in place. How is that any better? IMO, that’s far worse — as it would seem like that the casting directors would have gone with what seemed ‘close enough’ and providing zero representation. I’m happy with Anadil’s casting and loved Demi’s performance (wishing she had more lines tbh 😭😭). I hope that in the next movie, now that more people will know about it, they can hire an Albino actress for another role? (Perhaps Princess Uma? That would be cool).
Okay, now moving onto the antisemitism. Why — just why did they do that. In case you didn’t realise, as Sophie was turning into a witch and becoming more ‘evil’, she basically she became an anti-Semitic caricature. This is 2022 — I thought we had left the whole ‘evil is when long crooked nose’. Look, I’m not Jewish, but as some one from a middle-eastern background, I remember watching this moment with my family (who have long crooked noses btw) and we all cringed. This is 2022, why the fuck did they decide keep that anti-Semitic stereotype, I don’t know, but we have to hold the crew accountable.
I don’t know if this was Soman’s decision as I don’t remember it being in the books — however either way they could have easily just made sophie turn old and stuff. (Actually, now that I think about, that could be bordering ageism. Why does evilness have to be depicted through physical appearance anyway? Is there no other way to portray evil? Man, we are really screwed up as a society.)
Anyways — Can we please not be racists/anti-semites/bigots? Please?

The way that the sge movie seems to paint Sophie as a victim pisses me off to the nth degree
She is supposed to be evil and vain and looking down on everyone from the beginning. She looks down on Belle for feeding the homeless woman in the square because the woman was fat, she refuses to eat the food Honora makes for her despite her making Sophie’s favourite because she hates the woman. She makes friends with Agatha initially only as a good deed, treating Agatha as a means to her own ends and not as her own person. She feels no guilt over upsetting Radley who just wants to be her friend simply annoyance that she may not be taken to the school for good because of it. She does deeds she thinks are good such as placing a mirror in the church bathroom so people can go back to the pews looking good and she donates soap to an orphanage. Everything she does is based on the delusion that she is too beautiful and by extension good for her village. Her actions are clearly driven by her vanity and arrogance.
The movie makes Honora seem like an evil stepmother thus making Sophie’s dislike of her appear rational. The movie also changes how the girls first become friends so that it seems to be a genuine friendship on both parts. Because the girls only find out about the school that day, any “good” deeds Sophie does before this day become genuine to an audience. Visually as well, Sophie’s appearance is downplayed immensely: her dress appears to be hand made but not to the quality the original Sophie would want, the duller pinks of the dress make it seem dirty which makes Sophie appear less vain. Especially as her hair doesn’t appear to have had anything done to it nor does she appear to be wearing any makeup. This setup creates a character that is sympathetic to an audience with no vanity, no duplicity and no reason for staying in what is portrayed as a very unpleasant town.
Because of this setup, Sophie being sent to the school for evil makes no sense to an audience and even seems to merely be an admin error the staff are too scared to fix. This creates sympathy for her in an audience as this situation appears to not be her fault at all and looks horrible for her. Additionally Agatha blames Sophie’s action on Rafal and his “blood magic” (which was incredibly unnecessary) thus absolving her of any blame or responsibility for her actions.
All of this combined makes for a completely different character that appears to be a victim of circumstance instead of the original intention of her being this 100% evil girl who has been able to hide behind her beauty and the misconception that beauty makes people good
