Less Than 40 Days to PMC Weekend
The Pan-Mass Challenge is less than 40 days away, and this year’s ride is shaping up to be one of the most meaningful yet—for many reasons.
Tumblr media
My wife got me this figurine while she was in Paris :-)
The good news: my fundraising is going well! Thanks to your generosity and encouragement, I’ve raised $6,731 toward my $12,000 goal for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I’m incredibly grateful to the friends, family, and coworkers who’ve stepped up to support this mission.
The tougher news: I’m behind on my training. I may have pulled a hamstring and need to take a short step back to heal so I can step back up—strong and ready—for PMC weekend. I’m doing everything I can to recover quickly, because there’s too much riding on this ride.
Just this past week, I learned that a friend from high school was diagnosed with renal cancer. On Friday, they had surgery to remove a kidney. News like that reminds me why the Pan-Mass Challenge matters so much—and why I keep riding, no matter what.
We all have someone. And I ride for them.
If you haven’t had a chance to give yet, I’d be honored if you would consider supporting my ride. 100% of your donation goes directly to Dana-Farber’s life-saving research and care.
Please donate here:
https://profile.pmc.org/mm0373
Your support fuels more than my miles—it helps fuel hope, healing, and cures for people like my friend, and kids like Tessa, our team’s Pedal Partner.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s keep pedaling forward—together.
Sincerely,
Marty Middelmann 17-year PMC rider $6,731 raised of $12,000 goal

Supporting Equitable Cancer Care at Dana‑Farber
I'm reaching out as I prepare for my 17th Pan‑Mass Challenge ride—with a mission that goes beyond the miles. My fundraising goal this year is $12,000, and I've raised just over half of that so far—all to support critical work at Dana‑Farber, including groundbreaking equity efforts led by Dr. Christopher S. Lathan.
Tumblr media
Why your support matters now
Dr. Lathan, MD, MS, MPH, is the Chief Clinical and Access Equity Officer at Dana‑Farber and the founding director of their Cancer Care Equity Program. His research tackles how race, class, and access disparities drive differing outcomes in cancer care. He works tirelessly to:
Expand access to precision medicine and clinical trials for underrepresented patients
Build patient navigation networks so vulnerable individuals can overcome the barriers to care
Partner with Federally Qualified Health Centers to ensure marginalized communities receive top-tier treatment
Meanwhile, Dana‑Farber’s broader efforts are directly addressing how structural inequities, like systemic racism and economic hardship, lead to higher cancer incidence and mortality in underserved communities .
Your gift makes an impact
The PMC is Dana‑Farber’s largest single fundraiser, and 100% of your donation supports patient care and research. When you give, you're not only fueling scientific breakthroughs—you’re also helping ensure life-saving advances reach every person, regardless of background.
Please consider donating today:
Marty's PMC Profile Page
Every gift—whether $25, $100, or $1,000—helps amplify the work of Dr. Lathan and his team. Together, we can ride toward a future where high-quality cancer care is truly accessible to all.
Thank you for riding with me—both literally and figuratively.
With deep gratitude,
Marty Middelmann

Meet Tessa—Our 2025 PMC Pedal Partner
I’m excited to introduce you to Tessa, our incredible Pedal Partner for the 2025 Pan-Mass Challenge! Each year, PMC riders and teams are paired with a young patient from Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic through the Pedal Partner Program—and it’s one of the most meaningful parts of the ride.
Tumblr media
Tessa's hobbies and interests include gymnastics, Barbie and Peppa Pig.
At what was supposed to be a routine 3-year-old's checkup on October 1, 2024, Tessa was diagnosed with B-ALL Leukemia
What is the Pedal Partner Program?
It pairs pediatric oncology patients with PMC riders and teams, letting them ride in honor of these brave children.
On ride weekend, families line the route—especially at the Lakeville water stop—cheering on their partner riders.
The program builds deep, lasting connections and brings hope and joy through community support.
Why Tessa matters to us
Although Tessa is going through treatment, she’s part of our PMC family now—motivating us with every mile we ride. Her story fuels our passion and reminds us why we do this: to support Dana-Farber’s lifesaving research and compassionate care for kids like her.
How you can help
Our PMC team is riding for Tessa, her stories, and every child in the Pedal Partner program. As you may know:
100% of rider-raised funds benefit Dana-Farber
These funds directly support patient care, cutting-edge research, and programs that ensure children like Tessa feel seen, loved, and supported
Can I ask you to donate today?
Your gift — whether $25, $50, or $100 — will help bring hope to Tessa and dozens of other kids. Plus, it fuels our team’s mission to ride “closer by the mile” to a world without cancer.
Please Donate here:
Marty's PMC Profile Page
Thank you for cheering us on—with every pedal stroke, clap, and contribution, you are transforming lives.
With gratitude and determination,
Marty Middelmann

Now More Than Ever...
The PMC's Work Matters More Than Ever
I mentioned in my recent email that funding cuts will adversely affect the work being done at Dana-Farber.
To quote Billy Starr’s closing comments from the Heavy Hitter event:
Tumblr media
"My closing comments address this year’s record goal in a climate of economic uncertainty and science under attack. President Trump’s proposed 40% cut to the NIH budget, billions of which could impact Massachusetts. The negative impact to Dana-Farber could be $50 million, and as much as $200 million over the next four years.
"NIH grants fuel the science that saves lives. These funds do not sit in an endowment, they’re at work in the labs and clinics of the Longwood Medical Area. Losing those funds and/or the people who utilize them means stalling progress. Risking jobs. Slowing the momentum in our fight against cancer. This is not politics. This is personal. Because when federal support is under attack, patients are the ones who pay the price. That is why what you do – what we do – matters more than ever. We are the largest single contributor to Dana-Farber. And when others may pump the brakes, the PMC community needs to accelerate.
"So yes, we ride to raise money. But as importantly, we ride to protect progress. We ride to defend hope. And we ride to ensure that nothing—and no one—stands in the way of our funding the cures for cancer.”
The PMC has set a fundraising goal of $76.000.000 for 2025. The PMC needs to meet and exceed this goal to help Dana-Farber continue to make progress on cancer research.
Please help keep progress moving forward.

Heavy Hitter Evening
Heavy Hitter Evening
This past Friday, I had the pleasure of attending the Pan-Mass Challenge Heavy Hitter Evening at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport. This event is held in honor of those riders who have raised $10,000 or more in 2024.
After socializing during the cocktail hour, we headed to the main room where a number of speakers spoke.
Tumblr media
Billy Starr started the evening by stressing the added importance of our fundraising due to the cuts that are happening to NIH. Dana-Farber is looking to miss out on $50,000,000 in federal funding this year and over $200,000,000 over the course of the next 4 years.
Everyone needs to step up their game if we want the groundbreaking cancer research to continue to move forward at Dana-Farber.
Dr. Paul Richardson
One of the keynote speakers was Dr. Paul Richardson, (Clinical Program Leader, Director of Clinical Research, Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Center, DFCI).
He spoke of the many advancements and new approaches to treating Multiple Myeloma over the years. He was in charge of many clinical trials and I believe my college roommate, Chris Greklek (1968-2025), was in one of those trials.
The doctor spoke on one of the unexpected results of treating MM patients successfully through to remission was that they were living long enough to develop other cancers.
That's exactly what happened to Chris, and I couldn't help thinking about him while the doctor spoke.
The doctor then praised his team of clinicians doing critical research on MM and told them to stand up to be recognized. A group of what looked to be very young people at the table next to us all stood up. It was surprising to see how young they were, but also very hopeful, as they are the future of cancer research.
I hope that pipeline of scientific talent doesn't dry up due to the federal cuts in cancer research. These funding cuts have long-term impacts on cancer research and funding grants to support young clinicians could fall victim.
This year, it is more important than ever to donate to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to help make up for the shortfall in Federal funding.
So please donate to my Pan-Mass Challenge ride!

PMC 2025: Ribbons!
2025 will mark my 17th year riding the Pan-Mass Challenge! I initially rode in 2009 to honor a high school classmate who had lost his battle with cancer less than a year after graduating. For many of us in that 80+ class of 1986, it was our first loss of a peer to cancer.
Over The Years…
Over the years, the ride became more and more personal as friends and family have shared their stories with me. There is an increasing number of friends & family in my circle who have lost their battles with cancer.
First, I lost my step-father to a brain tumor just 2 months before my 2011 ride. Later, I lost friends, colleagues, and family members to cancer. Friends of mine have also lost family members to cancer. Every year I have cycled in new photos of those who I was riding for on the back of my jersey who have battled or were battling cancer. I ran out of room on my jersey for all the photos, so I had to start including only recent people.
This year, I will honor all of them with ribbons attached to my PHAT Tuesday Headgear.
Lavender for Cancer
Gold for Pediatric Cancer (for my team’s Pedal Partners since 2009, my first year)
Tumblr media
My Goal for 2025: $12,000
Since 2020, I have raised an average of just under $11,000 per year. This year I'd like to crack the $12,000 mark. Please help me reach, and exceed, that goal!
100% of every donation goes directly to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and supports cancer research & patient care.

CFTC - Erich Haberman
Some of us at CFTC knew Erich. Others who are new may not have known Erich, but may know others who have been touched by cancer. All of you have likely seen my fundraising flyer posted at CFTC.
Tumblr media
This year, with the blessing of Erich's wife, I am dedicating my ride to Erich.
Whenever I shared a class with Erich, I was always struck by how positive and determined he was, no matter how hard he struggled. He had a radiant personality and was always fun to be around.
Erich had been struggling with health issues. In the latter half of 2024 came the diagnosis of Stage 4 Colon Cancer.
That November he lost his battle.
He was the husband of 12 years to Nicole Haberman; and father to his beloved children, Charlotte and Noah.
Cancer sure does suck.

Winter Strength Training
It's cold and windy out. The roads are covered in salt. It's not exactly great conditions for riding.
Training for the PMC during the winter is a challenge. However, the winter months allow me to focus more on strength training. Thankfully I belong to a very good, supportive, and welcoming CrossFit Gym, CFTC (CrossFit TriCounty) in Bellingham.
The coaches at CFTC help guide me on my strength training, which is extremely beneficial for cycling. Core strength is important for a cyclist, but cycling does nothing to build your core.

This is the "behind the scenes dedication many of us riders have all year long when it comes to the Pan-Mass Challenge. We register in January and count the days until we ride. The Pan-Mass Challenge is 161 days away and even though I will be ramping up my fundraising in the spring, it is never too early to donate.

2025 - Year Seventeen and Another Reason to Ride
2025 will be my 17th year riding the Pan-Mass Challenge!
In 2024 I rode in honor of 2 of my college roommates who were battling cancer. Unfortunately one of them, Chris Greklek, passed away on the Tuesday before the PMC after a 17 year battle with cancer. His funeral was over PMC Weekend.
I was glad I made it a point to reconnect with him earlier that year. Cancer sure does suck.
Erich Haberman
Unfortunately, the end of 2024 gave me another reason to ride: Erich Haberman.
Tumblr media
I met Erich at the local CrossFit Gym I belong to: CrossFit Tri County in Bellingham, MA.
Whenever Erich and I were in the same class it always struck me how positive and determined he always was no matter how hard he was struggling. He had a radiant personality and was always fun to be around.
Erich had been struggling with health issues and in the latter half of 2024 came the diagnosis of Stage 4 Colon Cancer.

What is a "Pedal Partner"?
Tumblr media
PHAT Tuesday's 2023 & 2024 Pedal Partner: Teagan
In past emails I often mention my team's "Pedal Partner".
What Exactly is a "Pedal Partner"?
Pedal Partners are pediatric patients at the Jimmy Fund who are paired with PMC riders and teams. The teams ride in honor of their Pedal Partner and it is a reminder of "Why We Ride".
However it is more than just that. The teams often build relationships with the Pedal Partner families that go beyond the year that they are matched up.
It is also very important to the families themselves as the following 4 minute video highlights:

Some Numbers, a Video, and My Fundraising Update…
Some interesting numbers from the PMC:
What It Takes to Feed PMC Riders & Volunteers
1,500 pounds of Teddie Peanut Butter
8,400 hamburgers
400 gallons of Legal Sea Foods clam chowder
15,000 bags of Cape Cod Potato Chips
115 watermelons
9,000 Kayem hot dogs and sausages
600 pounds of Cedar's Mediterranean Foods hummus and tabouli
30,000 servings of DripDrop ORS
70 kegs & 900 cases of Samuel Adams alcoholic and nonalcoholic beer
700 pounds of Little Leaf Farms greens
31,000 pounds of Hans Kissle salads including lobster salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, and tortellini salad
And much more!
My PMC Day 1
I know during the ride on Day 1 I estimate that I drank roughly 5 gallons of electrolyte enhanced water, including about a quart of Del's Frozen Lemonade at the 4th Water Stop. Afterwards I ate about 5 hot dogs, a cheeseburger, a couple slices of pizza, a Sam Adams beer, and countless Polar Black Cherry seltzers!
The start of Day one was relatively comfortable until about mile 70, then it started to heat up. From there it was hot & humid with temps in the low 90's.
That explains the 5 gallons I drank :-)

2024 Fundraising Update
As the 2024 Pan-Mass Challenge recedes into the past the memories remain fresh and the body continues to recover.
It's not over yet though, there's still more time to raise funds. I have until the end of September to fundraise for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Many of you who are receiving this email have donated at least once in the past 3 years. If everyone on this list donates what you donated in your most recent year (2021-2023), it would bring an additional $5,000 in.
That would put me well past my 2024 goal of $12,000.
So if you can make a donation it would be greatly appreciated.
In the meantime, I have a PMC Video to work on ;-)

100% of every donation goes directly to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and supports cancer research & patient care.
